Just curious if you folks like to listen to any music while you build, and if so, what do you like? I love putting on some Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada it really helps me not think too hard and get into a good flow, both with mocs and sets.

Great question @Space Coyote!

I have Sirius XM, so I either put on '60's Gold or Classic Vinyl. (60's hits of all kinds / 60's and 70's rock hits, respectively) Either those choices, or the 5+ hours of Beatles music on my iTunes.... depends on my mood.

The Beatles....nice choice but I prefer John  Lennon with Yoko....Imagine....

I'm with @Murdoch17 on the '60-'70 rock bit. Although I wouldn't go with the vinyls while building, having to swap them every few songs would distract me too much.

Classic Vinyl is a satellite radio channel name, so I don't have to flip over any records. (I don't even own a turntable or records!)

Imagine is a good song, as are a good chunk of the other Lennon songs, but a few others...

I like music when I'm doing anything!

Not far off me. Also Detroit Escalator Company and Global Communication. Nothing too heavy, I save the Iron Maiden for driving.

I sometimes throw on a playlist of thematic or score music related to whatever theme I'm building in. If I'm just fiddling around with parts in a general sense, the soundtrack for the 2008 Nintendo Wii game Boom Blox is something I find inspirational--it's whimsical and cheerful, and as it happens, was composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, who would go on to compose the score for The LEGO Movie.

That is also what I do. In general I prefer to build without music but when I do want music it is something related to the theme.

I love both the Beatles and Lennon's more experimental stuff he did with Yoko, Plastic Ono band album is pretty great.

I'm gonna check those two first bands out, yeah stuff like Maiden is a bit too heavy for me when building but I love me some metal while cleaning or gaming. Love putting on some metal while I play Diablo 2 lately.

Mark is great, loved his work on Rugrats and the early Crash Bandicoot games. Matching your music to what theme you're working on is really creative, There's an acoustic album by The Sword that'd be perfect for a Castle village.

Thank you all for your great replies!

Well, rather different approach here, I believe ... I am old, a total nerd, and a chemist. It does not get worse, I believe :pir-huzzah2:

OK, so my daughters have grown up since long and live their lives, but they visit regularly, and we do spend some vacation time as a family. Now back in the days, there was (and still is) a table in the living room, set at about 90° angle to the TV - with no chance of watching TV - called the "Maltisch"; the girls used to be rather busy on that table. This is where I "build": Sometimes LEGO, way more times other stuff, such as vintage electronics, for example, my interfaces for 8bit wonders making them talking and listening to #9750. Mostly, though, I am thinking about making stuff. Have my notebook open (notebook as in collection of paper pages ;), and let the (often crazy) ideas flow in ... I love doing that. OK, I admit, mostly with one or two beers flowing in as well. What actually "plays" in the background is all music to me: Family laughing, watching "Germany's next top model", you know, these kinda things, I have difficulties to relate to, but love to be where all "others" are. The maximum "brutal action" allowed on the TV is "Columbo" (Yes, we really like that, the older, the better), my wife doesn't like any violent action at all. She also enjoys gardening shows a lot - and all that is lovely music to my ears. Tolerating each other's likes and loves - is wonderful music to me.

All the best,
Thorsten

When I build I prefer silence. When something happens around I tend to get involved "just to know". Kinda silly, I know.

I tried to play some music in the background but then the audiophile/music lover in me kicks in - I want to sit in a proper listening position and only enjoy the music.

So…I’m a deaf AFOL and I only listen to music I don’t understand lyrics (in other words, I rally don’t unerstand the human’s complicated speech…I just enjoy the sound).

I have beeen listening to jazz and Japanese music during building lego (don’t ask a dumb quesiton like “can you understaand Jpanese if you are deaf?”)

That's a really beautiful answer, thank you for sharing that!

I can understand that, lots of artists I enjoy I have to listen intently to fully appreciate them.

I love Japanese artists, Takanaka is a great jazz fusion artist, Yellow Magic Orchestra is another great one.

Yes, but I wouldn't call it listening lol. Often it'll be a single track that I currently enjoy played on repeat. Lots of Snail's House. Gets me in a flow state.
