[ENTRY][LARGE] Steve's First Voyage

When he was 10 years old Steve's parents Stephen and Stephanie let him join them on a long sea voyage on their trading vessel for the first time. This is how his adventures begun. Their job was to supply Imperial forts in the Caribbean.

Very fun build! I like how you fabricated your own sails and the real world environment really helps tell the story. I would just like to see some more closeups of your ship, maybe even the interior is possible.

Ahoy Matey!

They call me Captain Crit in these parts and I heard that polly wants a sandwich (They’re fed up with crackers apparently) - a criticism sandwich that is! (For you landlubbers, that’s 3 seas [Cs]- Compliment, Constructive Criticism, and another Compliment).

Ye did a great job buildin’ this! I love how Steve looks just like his ol’ dad. The presentation too is excellent- the rolling waves and rocky beach make a perfect backdrop for the build.

This build looks quite good from my perspective as someone who doesn’t build boats much. The only thing I can think of that may make this build a wee bit better is perhaps using tiles for the railings instead of plates. I think this would make the ship a little sleeker and smoother overall.

Me favorite part o’ this build is the excellent custom rigging, as well as the detail of getting all the vital parts of the ship- poop deck, mast, and sails, decorative bow and stern, cannons and covers, all the lanterns… very well thought out!

Thank you for the nice words, glad to hear that you like the ship. When it comes to the plates as railing I prefer exposed studs because I'm a bit old school when it comes to design.

Honestly, I was same way. A majority of me builds are full o' studs, simply because I don't have the tiles. But the winds are changing, and I've recently started to use more tiles, as it makes builds look a bit more polished and sleek. Hopefully you'll find these seas someday yerself matey!

I absolutely love the story, despite its brevity, because the concept is absolutely good. My only criticism is probably the cannon on the boat. I would have used a smaller built cannon (you can see ideas on youtube), as it takes up a significant amount of the cargo space.

Safety first, it's dangerous to be outgunned on the high seas.

I did not say that there should not be a cannon on board, but that a cannon of that size takes up too much space.

I understand but I wouldn't want to face the Black Seas Barracuda without a full size cannon (or two)

I love ships, and it's great to see one in its natural habitat (or at least very near it, haha) - I'm enjoying your go at the sails and rigging too, and Steve seems to have had a very impressive beard even as a little tyke!   Sure signs of coming greatness   As far as critiques go, I won't disagree with your large cannon (disagreeing with cannons, I find, is not good work ), but if you're looking for another voyage to the sea to mod this I do think some inverted slopes under the bow up at the front would be an improvement as the inverted staircase you've got right now doesn't look quite as adapted too cutting smoothly through the waves.  But one way or the other, I'm sure this was a voyage Steve enjoyed, and you can't go far wrong when you've got a monkey!

Yes, inverted slopes would look much better but I didn't have brown ones. Young Steve was very proud of his beard and felt like a true sailor!

Aye, it's  a pretty good compromise then!  Or then again, you could try black slopes, they'd probably blend in fine if you had any on hand

A nice choice of characters ; the father has similar facial hair to Steve and the mother has a matching outfit with the face. I like the natural settings and the story, though simple, is useful. There's a lot of studs on the boat, though, maybe adding a little more cargo could cover it up?

Also, maybe consider more yellow or gold on that boat to better contrast the red of the main body. This is because a "real world" picture has much tamer colours and you want your bright build to stand out a bit more (so less black and grey, more yellow and the likes-this is where nougat cargo boxes and the likes could be useful). Other than that, an excellent boat design, I have little to critique as a result.

I was thinking about adding more cargo but decided against it because I was afraid it would cover up the design of the ship too much because it's a small ship. I agree that more yellow would look great.

The lightness of details is actually a strength of your design, as it looks more retro (as one would expect from Steve's childhood memories...), don't worry, I once stacked twenty boxes in such a small space and the exterior (which is what most people will see) still looked the same. But otherwise, try putting one "big" thing to distract people with ( like a gem, or an animal on the decks, like a rat).

The rat or something similar I'll definitely consider doing. Those are some good ideas, thanks!

I REALLY enjoyed your Steve story, which is what I am personally looking for. I have the same two small ship hulls, I haven't used them yet, and as such was looking at your build for inspiration. I enjoy seeing older masts being used, since they are rarer these days. One question though... Why the green flag? Is Steve secretly working for the Imperial Armada?

I like using the molded cannons, I even prefer the non-shooting ones like you used here. I like the emblem.

Nice to hear that! I used the green flag to add some color but when you mention it maybe they have some connection to the Armada. Steve's parents also have Armada related clothes. I guess that they do business with the Armada.

I also like the emblem. I only have non shooting cannons from North American bought sets. I read somewhere that they had to redesign the shooting cannon for the US market because of regulations. Is that true?

Aye, some battlestar galactica toy with a firing cannon hit a kid in the eye, there was a lawsuit... and as a result other companies chose to pull out most of their shooty toys, or at least put a big warning on them.

Even then, I quite like them, and it fits the armada theme well, since they are kind of the spanish, who were kind of rich, so they could probably decorate their weapons more

It's so awesome Steve's photos from this era of humble beginnings were saved despite all the turmoil that he went trough, and that we all can still enjoy them!

Now i have to wonder tho, what happened to that ship? Is it still around and sailing? Did Steve inherit that vessel as his first command? Or is is still steered by his father, or mom, or monkey, or all?

But where's the rest of the family? Like Stephen Jr. Jr. and Step-Annie? Where's uncle Istvan and auntie Stenia? 

Anyway, hope Steve's family had it easier in their life and always sailed trough pleasant seas, unlike Steve's, but Steve is a hero of this stories, so he knew what he was signiip up for. 

but wait! i managed to spot Redbeard's parrot there. She's obviously spying for Pirates. Those cunning seadogs will be trying to stop Steve's family to deliver those supplies to Soldiers, no doubt about it. 

Still, Steve's parents got one hell of a ships there, i have no reasons to believe it won't outruns those water bandits. 

Im not sure about that figurehead tho, does it have a face? can we take a closer look? Is it carved to look like Steve and his relatives?
