Aye, some battlestar galactica toy with a firing cannon hit a kid in the eye, there was a lawsuit... and as a result other companies chose to pull out most of their shooty toys, or at least put a big warning on them.

Even then, I quite like them, and it fits the armada theme well, since they are kind of the spanish, who were kind of rich, so they could probably decorate their weapons more

Thanks for the information. I didn't know the details about the cannons.

It's so awesome Steve's photos from this era of humble beginnings were saved despite all the turmoil that he went trough, and that we all can still enjoy them!

Now i have to wonder tho, what happened to that ship? Is it still around and sailing? Did Steve inherit that vessel as his first command? Or is is still steered by his father, or mom, or monkey, or all?

But where's the rest of the family? Like Stephen Jr. Jr. and Step-Annie? Where's uncle Istvan and auntie Stenia?

Anyway, hope Steve's family had it easier in their life and always sailed trough pleasant seas, unlike Steve's, but Steve is a hero of this stories, so he knew what he was signiip up for.

but wait! i managed to spot Redbeard's parrot there. She's obviously spying for Pirates. Those cunning seadogs will be trying to stop Steve's family to deliver those supplies to Soldiers, no doubt about it.

Still, Steve's parents got one hell of a ships there, i have no reasons to believe it won't outruns those water bandits.

Im not sure about that figurehead tho, does it have a face? can we take a closer look? Is it carved to look like Steve and his relatives?

There are still many stories to be told about Steve and his extended family and your ideas gave me inspiration to make more minifigure to represent the rest of his family. The figurehead is a yellow minifigure with no details or printing but maybe I should put a Steve head on it.

As for the cannons... I don't know about you all, but I don't go around firing my cannons anymore. As such, I appreciate the emblem on them. They look BETTER than the shooting ones IMO.

My cat loves the shooting cannons and I have to admit that I like to shoot them once in a while and try to hit some minifigs on a ship :cannon:

Glad that You like them. Will be very happy to see those new characters materialize into new minifigs and new stories :)

Nice. That is fantastic news! But I participated in the large building category with the ship because it has over 200 parts when considering all the structural pieces that are not visible on the surface.

Cool seaside photos.

Thanks! I actually wanted to place the ship in the water and put some rocks under it so it would look like it's floating but I decided not to because of the wind and the waves.

Great build: looks very classic and authentic. But it pains me to see Lego, especially vintage Lego, getting dirty and sandy on the beach! Also, that beach is remarkably pebbly, what part of the world is it in?

I believe it is somewhere in Europe, I'd probably guess Western Europe (but not the UK since they left Europe a few years back).

I think it's nice to see toys being used elsewhere than in the comfort of one's house.

I missed a whole conversation on shooting cannons- oh no! They used to be one of my favorites as child. Me and my brothers would build shooting ranges and fire our LEGO cannons  at stacks of bricks and minifigs. Then we got a playmobile set that had a cannon and the wars really began! We still stuck to building with LEGO (don't worry, we didn't turn entirely to the dark side of playmobile), but it had great power for knocking LEGO towers apart. Now I just see cannons (and stud shooters) as a way to easily lose pieces, but they have a lot of nostalgia and are great for kids!

I've been hearing rumours that the shootable cannons are banned in America - what a travesty! It also seems strange to me that they can shoot guns, but not Lego cannons.

Posted (edited)

*Were banned in the United States of America, we in the rest of the continent had nothing to do with their silliness. Agreed about it being an absolutely bizarre decision.

Thank you! I took great care when I placed the ship on the beach and cleaned it immediately afterwards. It was only there for a couple of minutes. The beach is located in Hangö, Finland, very close to my home. In the first picture a fort is visible in the upper middle part of the photo. In the 18th century the Hangö peninsula was an important outpost for the Royal Swedish Navy and many fortifications were built to defend against raiding russians. My ancestors moved to the area because of their service in the Royal Swedish Navy. Therefore this area is very special to me and perfect for taking pictures related to that era. The video below is filmed on the other side of the fort and is a reenactment of one of the many battles fought in the waters around Hangö.

Me and my friends used to build forts with playing cards and hide minifigs inside them. Then we used the cannons to attack each others forts and the first who exposed all "enemy" minifigs won.

I recall doing something similar, but I think we may have used Jenga blocks instead and sometimes green army men instead of LEGOs. The goal was always to destroy your opponent's build and kill all their troops in the least number of shots.

Well, the first modern wargame (Little Wars by H.G. wells, yes that H.G. Wells) involved shooting toy cannons at enemy formations as an actual rule, so it's not that far fetched.

I'll admit me and my brother mostly used dice to determine combat result, even at a younger age (he pushed me to use dice since he was a fair bit older than me).

When we (in Australia) say America, we mean the USA, as its the only 'America' we talk about. The continent is referred to as North America.

What a history! Once again, in Australia, there's not nearly as much history. Very special.

The environment you photographed it in is definitely unique and I like it a lot! I'm a bit more cautious with my Lego than that, but so long as it wasn't dragged through the dirt! I also like how you seem to have mostly used only classic Lego elements from the 80s and 90s, really going for that old school look!

Someone mentioned using slopes at the front of the ship and I would expand on that a little and say that there are quite a few unnecessary angles that could potentially be eliminated. At the front again, you have the corner of a red plate sticking out beneath the light gray diagonal brick. The black railings above also look rather jagged.
