An altogether too amiable a fellow to be the victim of this unfortunate tale. Perhaps my next MOC with him should be more… wholesome? Time will tell! Quote
YellowFrog Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 Nice build! I'd like to see a whole ship built in this style. Quote

Math Wizard Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 Wow, quite a deep conversation seems to have sprung up here while I was away I think this build certainly takes the cake for the build with the most meaning hidden away in it! Something new to think about each time you take a look! Quote
Horation Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 That's quite true, and it's also got a lot of nice part usage. I especially like the way the net/tile intermixing creates such a credible water flow. Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 (edited) The connection to a poem is clever, and so is the water under the boat. One critique: the stand looks a little worse than the rest of it, but that's only because the rest of it looks great! Edited August 4, 2024 by YellowFrog Quote

Net and water was fun to do. 3 hours ago, YellowFrog said: The connection to a poem is clever, and so is the water under the boat. I realised very quickly that building a stand is going to be its own, separate challenge, and I had to incorporate a weight brick in it for stability. Making things worse was its tendency to topple on the background while taking pictures. The plates at the base were a last minute addition (and a necessity) while I was taking pictures. In the end I chose function over form. Edited August 4, 2024 by Samarth Quote
Horation Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 @Samarth, what will this new entry be about? Hopefully some more boats, but I'm confident your islands and buildings are just as nice. Quote

Then again, if you didn't have time to add a nicer base, maybe you didn't have time to edit either, which is understandable. The nice thing is that you only really see the tile on the right side, the others are fairly hidden by the camera angle. Quote
Horation Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Indeed, but maybe just retaking the picture from an angle where it looks hidden could do the trick? Otherwise, I don't think it's a big deal, most people probably won't mind all that much. Quote
Autumn Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Pretty nice build with a lot of cool little detail work (I like the use of a yellowed skeleton) and putting it at an angle makes it look like he's slowly sinking into the sea. The way you've made the water using a string net is a good idea, I think it would look even better if you added some more if you have another net or two to use. I think the edge of the ship where it's broken in two could look a bit more "broken" with fractured wood and splintered beams. It looks like too much of a clean cut like it was done with a knife. Horation Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Not so quick @YellowFrog, this is a Lego contest, and one should prioritise using Lego elements as a result. In other words, I don't see the problem with using a stand like this one, even if a non-Lego option would perhaps be slightly better. Quote
SevenDeadlyStreamers Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 I just noticed you used the trick of building on a LEGO net in order to make the water flow effect. Well done, you have impressed me once again! Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 (edited) Somehow, I didn't realise it was Steve in this build until now. What a great connection between two very different things (poems and Lego sets). Edited August 6, 2024 by YellowFrog Quote

No one else seems to be interested in doing some buildings for Steve’s faction, sadly. And I doubt I have enough time now. Unless @Mister Phes extends the date to the end of the month. And even then, this is a spare time thing so, who knows! I have a baby on the way, so life is about to be very different in a couple of months. The yellowed skeleton was sheer coincidence. The new skeletons can’t hold the guitar as convincingly! As for the ship, it was intended to be a cutaway rather than a shipwreck proper, hence the smoothness. Lego does all sorts of display stands for a bunch of sets these days… so I figured why not. Horation Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Yeah, I'll admit that without an etension we'll see fewer entries than last year. As for the stand, if you want it very Lego style, maybe print some sort of nametag and glue it/scotchtape it. (Though it's really not necessary) Quote

I’d certainly like to at least TRY and get another entry in. Maybe there’s more people like me, or people who may need an extension for even their first/only entry. Yeah, I don’t think a name tag/printed tile type description is really going to add anything :) Quote

I would vote for an extension myself, if only to see more great builds like this one. Quote

Andy-Roo Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 Great build of the ship, and the details are very well thought out! I like the story and the way of displaying this. Well done! Quote
Math Wizard Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 (edited) Ahoy Matey @Samarth! Looks like ye haven’t voted for a critic yet- just a reminder that voting ends soon. If ye vote for a critic ye gain +5 points on each entry you have submitted That’s an extra five (5) votes that yer missing out on by not voting! Yer also gonna be entered in a raffle for a $25 set, just for voting! So raise the anchor, hoist yer sails, and go vote, before it’s too late! Fair Winds! Edited August 31, 2024 by Math Wizard Quote
