Alex Ilea Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I usually like Lego's sets, but the front of this one looks like it had an accident. Everything seems off with the front, besides the intakes in front of the front wheels. I think a conversion from the current bad front to Bruno's McLaren front would be a superb improvement. To be honest, I expected more from the exterior of it overall, considering the price increase and using the Daytona as reference. They kind of took a step back with this one.... I simply view this set as a parts pack, as the new parts are really awesome! Quote

I simply view this set as a parts pack, as the new parts are really awesome! I think the truth is between the two models. Bruno's model is overall more accurate, but Lego's version flows better so looks better as a toy car. Bruno's version has a smaller headlight than the original, the Lego has bigger. Actually, either version are accurate at the front, but Lego's is more characteristic, though almost cartoonish. Quote
Paul B Technic Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I am hopeful some reviews will help clear up some of these questions. Quote
2GodBDGlory Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 This might be my favorite of these 1:8 cars so far! The color really fits well, and the contrast with the black parts works really well, I think. It's not perfect, and it's expensive as always, but I do appreciate that it's depicting a car I've actually heard of, after the last two ones being very niche special-editions. Mainly, though, I'm excited about new parts! Those wheels look really good for all-around use, and I definitely prefer them to the Ferrari's. The new panels will surely find uses, but I'm not really in the 1:8 super MOCing game anymore, so I don't especially care. However, I'm quite curious to see whether the orange shift drums are different from the teal ones, and if so, how. There's definitely limitations to what you can do with just the teal ones, so I'm hopeful that it's complementary to them and not just a recolor. The new suspension arms are very cool! They're not super visible, but it's nice to see that they're putting some effort into making key mechanical parts look realistic, and I do expect them to have some significant utility for MOCs. Of course, what I'm really excited about is that 12T clutch gear! It's a rare day when TLG makes a new size of clutch gear, and each time it opens up huge potential to revolutionize gearbox design, making a gearbox-designer-type like me really excited! I've been into Technic long enough to remember trying to build 7+R transmissions without wave selectors or any clutch gears other than 16T ones, so to be able to build gearboxes today with two different systems of rotary shifters and four sizes of clutch gear is pretty wild! I can't wait to get my hands on some of these 12T gears, though until then I can just dust off the custom one I made years ago. I wonder if they'll ever make clutch versions of 8T or 28T gears. It would be cool, but I would understand it if they concluded that the system is now complete. Now if we can just get a 32T gear someday! Quote
Pvdb Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 From some angles I think this looks really nice, some of the bodywork details not so great though. Interested to see all of the new parts on the inside. looking forward to build it. There is surely potential for loads of mods and improvements with this one :-) Quote
zonoskar Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 OMG, why does Lego have to make pieces in those weird colors. Even the new suspension arms are in yellow. WTF Lego? Quote

Don't get me wrong, I like that new wishbone piece, it's just kinda useless without the proper steering links. Edited July 11, 2024 by Bensch55 Quote
langko Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 I still wish LEGO would just fully commit to the color they are building in. I get it at the cheaper end but at this price point there shouldn’t be black/DBG connectors in places where it’s so obvious an orange one should be… The bag is back! But still looks like a lazy afterthought… Will buy this for all the exciting new parts and mechanical aspects. This will definitely feel like a new build compared to some of the recycled modules in the previous models in the series. I agree with some of the thoughts with the front though, and the rear looks a bit empty without any sort of vents/mesh in the rear section under the lights. But this one will be a fun one to modify. I skipped the SP3 but overall I’m looking forward and excited for this one. I can’t believe they finally ditched the little panels for the door mirrors as well! Only took 5 cars… Quote

When you look at the underside at 10:05 there’s some rather interesting stuff going on with a lot of u-joints and a clutch piece as well… Edited July 11, 2024 by langko Quote

Why does every cog have to be a different color? I could live with all pieces indicating a function being red or blue or yellow. Edited July 11, 2024 by zonoskar Quote

Width is OK; it goes arround differential, but to mount it is enough to have one stud (lets say with pinhole) and it could have been in green why not (there is John Deere license) Edited July 11, 2024 by 1gor Quote

Didn't realize from those drawings that it's offset in all 3 dimensions, it's not just a 2d diagonal. Pretty reasonable angles for modern car windshields at least. But I guess there has to be two of them, a left and a right version. Since about this post, I haven't seen much discussion of the new windshield frame parts. They look oddly specialized, but do have the potential for a very strong, yet good-looking, roof. I was curious about this guess that there'd need to be left and right versions, though, and after playing around a little in stud.io, I'm pretty confident that flipping one end to end would cause the angle to flip, allowing it to be done with just one mold Quote

In your comments and your reviews you're always an optimistic voice of reason-type, and when you criticize a set for its flaws you do it in a very respectful manner. No disrespect to those on Eurobricks who aren't like this though. Quote
User5346 Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Apparently the P1 replacement will be revealed in October (around 3 months). Can’t help but think LEGO should have waited and made that the flagship hypercar set instead. Quote

damian_kane_iv Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 those new steering control arms open a lot of possibilities for larger offroad models with simplified suspensions Quote

If I were to get this set and the 42177 I would try using them for upgrading the front axle of the Rover... These pieces are more realistic wishbone-type suspension arms than the 57515 imo. They look to be 6 studs long and 7 wide, right? Edited July 11, 2024 by Fluwoeb Quote

Asymmetrical parts are confusing. It has the same 3L beam on both ends and no studs to matter which way up it is, so it should work to just flip it. Quote

They look to be 6 studs long and 7 wide, right? For sure, they also open up the possibility of attaching the struts to the lower wishbone as opposed to the upper as is customary in technic sets. I was specifically thinking of this for a 1:8 Toyota type vehicle: the new piece using the lower wishbone and maybe the standard control arm piece for the upper Quote
