McLaren to reveal P1 successor on October 6th.

I know it's not related to this set, but I know there's many who believed this car was going to be the 42172 instead of the nine-year-old P1.

Is the real SP3 that much "pointier" than the real P1?

From what I can gather, if you scale the blueprints of the 2 cars to have the same front wheel diameter as the tyre LEGO uses.... then the SP3 is approx 1 stud longer.

But I still think the biggest problem with the front of the P1 is that the front wheels are way too big.
From what I could find the real P1 has 315/30R20 tyres on the back and 245/35R19 at the front.
Using a tyre website that roughly equals 698mm and 654mm diameters respectively. 
Lego's tyre is 87.9mm.
Divide the rear 698 tyre by 87.9 and you get 7.94 scale. Pretty good!
But divide the front 654 tyre by 87.9 and you get 7.44 scale. Pretty decent difference.
If you divide the front 654 tyre by the OG 81.6mm tyre the earlier supercars use you get 8.01 scale. Almost perfect size compared to the rear!
So when the front wheels should really be the size of the old ones of course the whole front is going to look too short, even if the bodywork is in proportion to the rest of the car.

Right, so nose of the P1 model should've been exactly 1 stud longer. Looking at @jb70's virtual model (I don't have the set (yet?)), I don't see any reason whatsoever -- structural nor aesthetic -- why the nose couldn't have been made 1 stud longer...

Maybe their own designers got fooled by the too large front wheels? We'll probably never know.

I wouldn't give that kind of blueprint too much credence, front overhang is a very common area for them to be wrong, cause they're often traced from reference photos that aren't precisely side-on.  Half-stud difference is well within what I've seen them be wrong (worst ones I've worked with are probably >2 studs at this scale) Best comparison method is to match the Lego set to a photo in controlled conditions (focal length, framing, etc.) 

 

Probably the front wheels being large led to them fitting various bodylines to that scale instead of the overall scale.  Bringing in 80mm tires would be nice if there are wheels that look decent.

If you compare the front of 42115 to that of the real Sian, you see clear differences. It doesn't feel like that was subject to as much debate as the P1 is. To me the LEGO P1 looks great, though I have yet to see the set in real life.
