The 4 predecessors all needed "major work" as well, in the eyes of this community.  See for example the Pimp Up My XYZ projects, all bringing substantial improvements.

You gunna do that for P1? Hopefully?

Well here is first in depht look at the gearbox

Thank you very much for sharing this! I really enjoyed building the gearbox for this car! Also the exponential speed changes shocked me.

So it looks like this car has two neutral gears. The first one is in the gearbox itself, and the second one is part of the DNR selector.

Now imagine this transmission but with a multiplier stepper (45 degree intervals). We could stack two of these transmissions together and get a 64 speed transmission!

I also wonder about any other applications with this drum fork system. Maybe we could see some full RC sets with a remotely controlled distribution gearbox?

According to Unbrickme's video, the ratios are

0.71
1.1
1.77
2.76
4.42
6.9
11.05

The actual P1's ratios seem to be closer to linear:

0.71
1.081710677
1.483732283
1.911095335
2.434547804
3.119768212
4.120276968

A good way to look at it is mapping top speed over gear ratio, that gives a feeling of what's reasonable to achieve with the engine running at maximum rpm.

The P1 can officially  reach 350Km/h, divide it by eleven and you get a 32Km/h top speed in first gear. I bet your city car can do better. :pir-hmpf_bad:

With the real ratios, that value is a much more reasonable 85Km/h.

The Lego rations are clearly just for show. Not that that's bad, on the contrary in fact as they make the effect of gear shifting much more visible. :pir_tong2:

@danielhstahl these numbers are a great find, thanks!

The “MSO P1” is getting few more facelifts here and there. Playing around with ideas - nothing set in concrete, extended the mid rear bumper section, Fence System parts have been fitted and changed lower taillights. Thumb wheel is back to it’s original position, as the Small Panels have also moved outward too.

I have replaced to original 12L Red Soft Axles with 11L versions to have a more robust connection at the 3L Connectors above the exhaust outlet with an Axle/Pin, rather than relying on the Soft Axles for the connection through the Liftarms. Also replaced the odd in your face Blue Axle/Pin in the Red #4 Connector with a Red Pin and Bar.

Looks great, though I don't like the use of fence parts, looks odd IMO.

Let's see how it compares.

First impression: Paper bags! Until today, I believed these to be a myth only sent to recognised reviewers.

I either made a building mistake, or there is an error in the instructions. At page 193 they show you to test the gearbox, but in mine another gear spins while the other one rotates freely.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct? I tested it, and the gears are in order, so I guess I built it correct. Not that I will ever use the gearbox, but I do want it to be right.

Check out the link below to Ramblingbrick - maybe the same error?

Ramblingbrick Quote:- “Be careful with the gearbox. Take your time and get it right!” The advice I heard rings in my ears.

does anyone know a good disassembly guide or an easy way to split the build into 2 or 3 large pieces? I bought the thing in London and now I need to fly home to New Zealand and I don't know if I can be bothered to take it all apart...

Are you in the USA? I’ve just opened my copy and all the bags are plastic. I’ve been seeing European reviewers receive sets with paper bags for over a year and I haven’t gotten a set with them yet.

Nope, Europe. This is also my first set with paper bags. I did however get (so far) one small plastic bag inside one of the bags, and the “extra” pieces like the frames and wishbones did come in a plastic bag.

Did they remove the QR code for the LEGO Builder's app (and to redeem the 20 insider points)?

I looked in the manuals but I only found links to download the app, access to the insider's area to redeem the content with the tile code, info on packaging...

The McLaren P1 arrived yesterday, it is disappointing that these flagship sets are arriving containing the crazy amount of plastic bags.
Information on the outer LEGO box - Country of Origin:- CN (China) 14/5/24. Hopefully with next 1:8 car TLG will celebrate the 10th Anniversary with all paper bags!

Don't you think it's strange that you are unhappy with the packaging of plastic parts in plastic bags!? There is less plastic in a plastic bag than in a black pin.

Yeah, fully understand the irony of that, but we are not generally throwing Lego in the bin. I still have bits from 45 years ago, probably like many others or bins of Lego that has been passed through multiple families over years.

Yep, my family too, the old lego is still going strong.

Oh yeah! I inherited my Dad's/Uncles' Lego collection (Mostly classic Space) on my fifth birthday, and have been at it ever since!
