KolonialbeamterdeMartinez Posted August 1, 2024 Posted August 1, 2024 In my 310 parts display you can find Steve in the jungle of a small island in the Pacific. But more about that in the background story and pictures! In a bustling harbor by the sea, Steve heard a tale of mystery. An old friend spoke of treasure grand, On a dense, lush island land. The friend, once bold, now old and frail, Could no longer embark on the daring trail. Steve, though not a treasure seeker, Felt his curiosity grow much deeper. With a map in hand and hope in heart, Steve set sail, his journey to start. Through storms and waves, he bravely fought, To reach the island where the treasure was sought. The jungle thick, the path unclear, But Steve pressed on, without fear. Days turned to weeks in the wild terrain, Facing dangers, enduring pain. At last, a cave with treasures bright, Gold and gems gleamed in the light. Steve's heart soared with triumph sweet, But his adventures was not complete. From the shadows, a warrior appeared, His gaze intense, his presence feared. What would he do? Friends or foe? Steve's fate now hung in the unknown. The story ends with mystery, What happens next, we wait to see. Steve's adventure, bold and grand, Leaves us wondering, what's at hand? Quote
Elephant Knight Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 I really enjoy the crab using the skull as a shell. EKnight Quote
Horation Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 A fine entry, hopefully not the last! A clever build, and it's rather vast. Excellent mix of colours and sizes For the foliage and rocks, but prizes? Perhaps, but that statue's red mouth is quite goofy, for the folk of the south to use in such a manner. So I'd either make a sticker, or a nose, as to avoid a large lake of red, at such a point, but other than that, this diorama should do well in the combat that is the voting thread, best of luck! May you win more than one buck. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted August 2, 2024 Governor Posted August 2, 2024 The question remains; did Steve escape with the treasure? Or did he meet an untimely fate? Steve's Treasure Hunt has been incorporated into the Entries Index. Quote
Math Wizard Posted August 2, 2024 Posted August 2, 2024 Ahoy Matey! They call me Captain Crit in these parts and I heard that polly wants a sandwich (They’re fed up with crackers apparently) - a criticism sandwich that is! (For you landlubbers, that’s 3 seas [Cs]- Compliment, Constructive Criticism, and another Compliment). Ye did a great job buildin’ this and writin’ a story to go along with it. The story in poetic verse really hits the spot for a good pirate tale- quite creative! And the mystery at the end… I can’t wait to find out what happens next. Hopefully you’ll be buildin’ a sequel to this! With such a good build already, it took me a bit to come up with a critique. The only thing I can think of is that it seems a tad small. Perhaps the jungle terrain could be extended a wee bit further in each direction, to make it a tad larger. Also, in terms of presentation, perhaps you could intermix the pictures with stanzas from the story, since I first I didn’t realize that the build changed over the course of the pictures. It was hard for me to pick out me favorite part o’ this build, but I really like the brickbuilt islander- quite clever usage of parts. In fact, the whole build has a lot of great NPU. My other favorite is the skull used as a crab shell. Fair Winds Matey! Quote
Horation Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 I feel like that's a fair point you make @Math Wizard, if the creator intertwined the stanzas and small vignette pics, it would really add to the atmosphere of the build, and I think it would add quite a lot of value to this entry. I also now realize how much dark you used to create a feeling of the unknown ; you used dark green and grey along with a black base to set the tone effectively. Quote

Interesting thought. Perhaps a darker background color could add to this sense. Maybe a navy green or dark gray instead of white? Quote
Horation Posted August 3, 2024 Posted August 3, 2024 @Math Wizard, yeah, I do think that dark grey would look quite good around this build. Even more so if it would be too complicated to make a CGI forest background, this would be a fine compromise Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 Neat build, particularly the hermit crab, mop-plants, and palm tree construction. My only critique would be that the statue in the back feels unnecessary, and looks like a large duck on first glance, perhaps due to the colour scheme. Good work! Quote
Autumn Posted August 4, 2024 Posted August 4, 2024 This is a really good build! Hard to find anything to criticise. The statue's great, I love the use of technic half pins for eyes and using the underneath of a jumper plate as teeth! I guess if I have to be a critic, there's a bit too much being crammed into such a small space. Either make more space or repriotise something somewhere, like make the shrine a little smaller, or even try putting the statue on top of the shrine and make it a part of it. Quote
Horation Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 @Autumn , there is indeed a lot of cramping in there, but that is how a real jungle looks. This is especially true if this spot is being hidden by the local tribe. Quote
BardDandelion Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 Such a great little scene! I'm a big fan of using machete instead of regular pirate saber. This work much better in jungle environment. Skull for hermit crab "shell" is a nice touch, as was already mentioned. Usage of vibrant colors (yellow, red) in the statue reminds me of Adventurers: Jungle theme. Was that intentional? Quote

For example, The Last Supper has everyone on one side of the table when realistically they would be sitting on both sides, but Da Vinci didn't paint it that way because then you would only see half of everyone's faces. My two pence. Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 (edited) The build is definitely a little cramped. But if you don't want to remove anything, perhaps consider spreading it out over another 4 or so studs horizontally. Edited August 6, 2024 by YellowFrog Quote
Horation Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 (edited) Yes, a lovely idea, it wouldn't even take too long to be made a little larger. And it would allow for more tiny details. Edited August 9, 2024 by Horation punctuation Quote
SevenDeadlyStreamers Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 You’ve got some serious Nice Parts Usage (NPU). I see mop heads as shrubs and I like the effect the modified ties have on the statue’s mouths. It gives them little fangs! Quote
Horation Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 I hadn't even realised those parts were mop heads! They truly looked like some vegetation pieces. Good eye, Sir! Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 (edited) One concern I have with a lot of NPU in digital builds is that the elements might not be made in real life, so building it for real might never be achieved. What's the case for this one? Edited August 6, 2024 by YellowFrog Quote

What's the case for this one? Mop head come in bright green in several sets so this tedailt would be possible to achieve with physical bricks. I was intrigued by black broom part (it is used on the top of the statue) but according to BL it is available in black since this year. It comes in Dinsey Princess Maleficent's Dragon Form and Aurora's Castle set. Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Thanks for the info. It's encouraging to see that it can be built for real. You never know, someone might build it one day! Quote
Bravo. Quote
Christophh Posted August 13, 2024 Posted August 13, 2024 Great work on this build! I love the brickbuilt statue and the hiding spot for the treasure! You really get the feeling of the jungle and those skeleton heads give it a bit of a spooky vibe, reminding me of the Islanders, which I love. Me personally, I am not a big fan of that Chima crocodile, i think it doesn't march to the rest of the build. But otherwise it is perfect. I am not sure if I haven't commented on this one, but I love it so it doesn't matter. Quote
Math Wizard Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 (edited) Ahoy Matey @KolonialbeamterdeMartinez! Looks like ye haven’t voted yet- just a reminder that voting ends soon. If ye vote for a critic ye gain +5 points on each entry you have submitted, and another +5 if ye vote for other builds. That’s an extra ten (10) votes that yer missing out on by not voting! Yer also gonna be entered in a raffle for a $25 set, just for voting! So raise the anchor, hoist yer sails, and go vote, before it’s too late! Fair Winds! Edited August 31, 2024 by Math Wizard Quote
