Lighthouse Keeper Steve

Thanks for the feedback, this is the latest version:

After a career spent dodging pirates, an ageing Steve has become a lighthouse keeper.

The only danger he faces now is from boredom, thankfully he has plenty of rum to keep that at bay.

This model, which was inspired by the first Eddystone Lighthouse in Cornwall (UK), is made up of 756 parts.

The roof and the top two floors can each be removed to reveal Steve's living quarters (now accessible via stairs):

I've tried to keep the style closer to the original pirates sets I played with growing up (I am old) while including some newer elements.

Any suggestions for improvements are welcome.

Quite an original idea! I like the roof and the style of the structure- it is very reminiscent of vintage sets.

I also appreciate the interior details, it's not something everyone thinks about.

I have however got a few critiques for this build. 

First, there's a lot of white and not much else on the structure, which I understand is meant to be accurate to real world lighthouses, but adding some stickers with dark red brick patterns or replacing some of the white bricks with dark red masonry bricks would do a lot to make it look like traditional pirate sets

Also, how does Steve leave the island if he needs to? There's no dock and no small boat for him to use, so he's stuck there, which could be quite annoying, I feel like adding a small dock with a few plates could really improve the build's quality.

I quite like this! You've done very well at capturing the classic throwback look like some of the modern sets have. I like how you can remove each level to get inside too.

I agree that there could be a bit more detail than just plain flat walls to make it a little more interesting to look at. Some more colour might be nice but I think you could still keep it a clean white if you'd like just by embossing it with some different elements to give some variance.

The base could be a little wider as well, being the almost exactly the same width as the lighthouse makes it too straight and doesn't give our eyes much to look at, especially when the door opens up straight onto the ocean. Make it a few studs wider on each side to make it look like the lighthouse is built on a strong and solid foundation.

I'll add some masonry bricks, maybe dark tan.

The base is a bit thin because it was originally going to be on an old 16 x 16 baseplate I have from Sabre Island:

 

But, yeah, considering the size I should expand the base and build up the rocks. A jetty would be good too. Maybe a cave...

They call me Captain Crit in these parts and I heard that polly wants a sandwich (They’re fed up with crackers apparently) - a criticism sandwich that is! (For you landlubbers, that’s 3 seas [Cs]- Compliment, Constructive Criticism, and another Compliment).

Ye did a great job buildin’ this so we know what happens to Steve later in life. Thanks for unfolding the next chapter of his saga! I’m glad you updated the design- the second version looks far better! It’s crazy how much just a few more rocks and bigger baseplate make- it is far more balanced now. 

Me biggest critique here is the yellow stripes at the corners. I’m not sure why they stick out extra far, but it looks kinda awkward. Maybe find an alternative solution if possible- would SNOT’ed slopes fit better? Also, while I appreciate the extra weathering you added, I would make it dark red rather than grey, in order to give another nod to the original color scheme.

Me favorite part of this build is the interiors. They are really well detailed, especially for such a small space. The simple meal of bread and cheese looks good, and the candle/table and chest really fill out the room. I like the bedroom and top too, but the office space really takes the cake for me. Though I do wonder…how does Steve climb between floors? Does he just scale the exterior and go through a window?

I appreciate the classic pirates style. It is simple and clean, and the fact that you made the floors accessible leans into the play features that all older set had! A critique I can give you would be to add a little more to the base plate, maybe some splashing water? I’m happy you included a parrot, that was going to be my other suggestion. Well done Matey!

The foundation looks a lot nicer like you would expect from a proper lighthouse. But I agree the water needs some more detail now.

I think this is a good build, but in my opinion it is a bit boring. I would add some veins on the outside or a balcony or something, so that it is not just the 4 walls straight up to the top!
