YellowFrog Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 (edited) Steve is sneaking into a bluecoat fortress... He needs to be careful so they don't spot him... Who knows why he's going there... But for such a perilous journey, it must be important! Is that a barrel of rum I see? That would explain it. He's going to steal their precious rum, probably to sell in his trade as a merchant. That's how Steve does his trading - he steals goods and sells them under the guise of a merchant. Little do they know, he is a pirate at heart (hence the stealing). A last-minute entry into the Steve contest. Estimated 180 parts, built in an hour. Edited August 17, 2024 by YellowFrog Formatting Quote

Franco Clarke Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 Nice little build, reminds me of Broadside's Brig rebuilt in the style of the new fortress. Quote
Autumn Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 I like the plants growing up the side of the wall, you've done them quite nicely. The whole things almost feels like a proper set. The only thing I think it's missing is something a bit more overtly pirate-y, like a cannon or parrot or palm tree, even a monkey, the setting feels a tad ambiguous otherwise. Quote
Horation Posted August 17, 2024 Posted August 17, 2024 (edited) I really like this build, especially the shot-by-shot storytelling, but I'd like it if Steve had some sort of a bush or rocky outcropping to hide behind, since he'd easily be seen from where he's trying to hide. Other than that, this is a really good build, especially since it was put together so quickly. Edited August 17, 2024 by Horation word choice Quote
Math Wizard Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Ahoy Matey! You know me by now- It’s Captain Crit, back with another criticism sandwhich for ye polly! [I know the contest is officially over and voting has begun, but I’ve been busy of late and didn’t get to post crits of all the last builds so I’m just starting now] Ye did a great job buildin’ this (especially considering the timeframe) and writin’ a story to go along with it. I especially like the scene by scene aproach of your story- it works quite well. Of course it all began with a barrel of rum… what better way is there for a pirate to start? This build is quite good (I wish I could build things this good this fast, but even a small build seems to take forever), so I only have a small critique; where the wall bumps out around the window. The angled plates where the wall goes back to flat look somewhat odd, and create a gap that you can see therough the structure. I would remove these and just span the gap with a longer brick or plate. Me favorite part o’ the build is the texturing. The clean smooth wall with curved tops and the occasional outset brick looks great, as do the plants growing up the side, and the simply studded terrain. The little roof has just the right balance of stud and tile and the occasional masonry brick in the base suits the scene perfectly somehow! Fair Winds Matey! Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 25, 2024 Author Posted August 25, 2024 Thanks for the feedback, @Math Wizard. This is my first time building angled walls, but I still don't quite understand what you're saying here. Do you mean the 1x4 wedge plates should be replaced with longer ones, such as 1x6? All this would do it make these plates not line up with the angled wall below it, due to the different angle. Quote

Hopefully this makes sense. Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 30, 2024 Author Posted August 30, 2024 I see what you're saying here, but they are there for the structural integrity of the build. I'll see what I can do, but I won't do much, as the Steve contest is over now anyway (well, the submissions are). Quote
YellowFrog Posted September 4, 2024 Author Posted September 4, 2024 If anyone wants to see how I built this, and then adapted it to be a castle MOC, see here: It was actually based on a castle set, originally. Quote
