Kaijumeister Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Starting off on the positive side, the kart builds as well as the character builds look great. I especially love the idea of power ups being used with stud launchers! Now for the negative. Since 2020 as much as I’ve wanted minifigures, I’ve understood and accepted that this is the route Lego has chosen to take with this theme and that was fine. As of 2025 this theme will be in its 6th year, that’s over half a decade into its run, and Lego still refuse to touch minifigures. What really frustrates me is that Mario Kart of all things is about scale. The courses are huge, and the character roster even moreso. This should have been the subtheme to introduce minifigures because it just broadens the scope of what you can do - more karts, more characters, heck, maybe even full-on tracks as opposed to just more side builds. What’s the point of Lego tackling Mario Kart if the size of these models ends up being fairly close to alternative toys on the market? Rant over. But someone please tell me that Mario Kart of all things isn’t where doing things in minifigure scale would have made tons more sense. Quote
Lion King Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Still no minifigures…. Ok i give up for good. But these kart sets look great! I love banana peel piece. Quote
JohnTPT17 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I find it very amusing that the Bowser Car was apparently a Trojan Horse used to get these sets into existence (I'm only half-kidding). And I agree with y'all - I'm still wanting minifigs to go with these, but some of the buildable characters have their own charm, too. I might try to get the DK set and the Standard Kart on sale, but I'm not rushing out to get these by any means. I also find it interesting that there's no representation of a blue shell in any of the sets - I feel like that's one of, if not the most, iconic Mario Kart items. Heck, a larger, buildable one in the $10-15 range (a-la the Fortnite Durr Burger) would probably sell like hotcakes to people wanting a desk toy. Quote

While I would've liked to see more in the way of courses, I sort of disagree with your comments about scale—I would argue that bigger figures allows more detail in the design of the karts themselves. These kart builds look fantastic and I imagine minifig-scale versions would leave a lot more to be desired in terms of both accuracy and build quality, especially for smaller karts like the Biddybuggy. Anyway, I love the look of these sets! The variety of karts featured is fantastic and the characters are great too (including characters like Baby Mario, Peach, and Luigi). Not only do we have several classic karts, but also a bike, and the three most iconic items (besides the accursed evil one we do not speak of) Yeah yeah, no minifigs yada yada, but come on, we knew that since the teaser. Why are people surprised? Quote

But now that I see them, I don't feel inspired to get any of them. The karts are nice, and definitely benefit from the larger scale. For me though, the joy of Mario Kart is in the amazing settings, but so much the karts. These sets feel a little underwhelming. And are they better the play with than purpose built karts? Stability feels like it might be an issue. I look forward to some reviews to see a bit more of them, and a potential second wave. Are the blank karts supposed to accommodate the digifigs? Quote

It looks like all of the karts can fit the digi-figs, actually. I don't think there ought to be any stability issues, either—these look plenty robust enough for play. Quote
danth Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I'm guessing the baby Mario/Luigi figs have the same round body/feet as Toad? They seem to have an arm that accepts a standard minifig hand. Quote

Yeah, they seem to use the same arms as the Minions figs (using a Technic pin for the shoulders like the previous arms in the Mario theme but with a minifigure hand). It works well for characters who need sleeves or gloves—I kind of hope that if Kamek/Magikoopa appears in another set they use those as well since the bare arms they used previously weren't that accurate. Lion King Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I know i did say “i give up” in my earlier post but…. Can’t Lego blend digi-figure sets into Super Mario theme with minifigure-verision sets? Like, Disney has both minidoll and minifigure sets. Marvel and DC. Themes are mixture of 18+ set and playsets. I’m not saying that they old get rid of digi-figures but they should add minifigures to the theme. It’s really frustrating for Lego not doing minifigure sets since 2020. I’m really glad that Lego does minifigure-style ones for Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Animal Crossing… Quote

Just voicing my frustration is all, I agree the kart builds look beyond perfect though. Hopefully we’ll see more small sets in the vein of Yoshi’s bike as I can see myself picking those up for sure. Nintendo is insanely controlling of there IP's. Lego loves making money and knows figs would fly off the shelves so I think it's Nintendo's call about that because Nintendo does weird stuff and have made some bad moves in the past that would have made them billions and they just flat out missed the opportunity. I was moreso thinking that stuff like the enemies would require new molds alongside the minifigures. Where as stuff like Sonic and Animal Crossing just have a few new molds each being mainly the heads. You can't exactly brick build a minifig scale Goomba or Koopa Edited August 25, 2024 by Takanuinuva Quote

The humanoid characters can easily be realised as minifigs, but so many characters just wouldn’t work in that form, unless they introduce a ton of specialised pieces That said, I still think they should include minifigs of at least Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad in a D2C set Quote

The Sonic theme is probably a pretty good example, honestly—two years in only a handful of major characters have actually been included in sets, very likely because of the cost involved when every character has to have a distinct head mold. Another issue with minifigures is, given the likelihood that characters like Mario would have molded heads to stay "on-model", there'd be unfortunate limits on customizability. Currently a fun thing you can do is put Mario's hat on just about any enemy—you couldn't really do that if the hat was molded to the head. I wouldn't be entirely opposed to a couple of Mario minifigs in a D2C set or something, but overall I'm glad that hasn't been the main direction of the theme. Quote

I guess they‘d give a Mario minifig a dual-moulded hair-hat combo piece, but your point still stands, you wouldn‘t be able to put that piece on enemies either A full minifig subtheme is unlikely at this point, but I‘m still keeping my fingers crossed for a D2C set one day. The course-building system is clearly super-successful given how long it‘s been going, but they must be aware of the demand for minifigs Also, we need this to prevent @just2good from losing her mind Quote
Lyichir Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 I've been trying to build some of the Mario Kart sets on Stud.io and have noticed a few things that I didn't realize when I first saw the sets. I noticed this pretty early, but all the karts are designed for the digi-figs to be able to ride, with big enough seats that have scannable barcodes (presumably to make kart sounds based on the accelerometer). While only the set of Mario's Standard Kart includes a glider, all of the karts have a click hinge attachment point for the glider. Hopefully other glider styles show up in future sets! Both the large and small wheel/tire combos seem to be dual molded (some of the smaller ones use the same color for the wheel and tire but you can tell that the smaller ones can be colored separately on Baby Peach's Wild Wiggler). The bar on the back of the DK Jumbo seems designed to allow another character to grip on and ride on the back, Double Dash style! Fitting considering that kart was introduced there. Quote
Takanuinuva Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 (edited) Upon a second look at the sets. It appears Baby Mario and Luigi do use the Minifig Torso. And odd choice considering the system the use for the Toads would have worked. I wonder if they have legs as well. Edit: Correction they're using the Toad body style. Brickset didn't have all the images. Edited August 28, 2024 by Takanuinuva Quote
Izzynufc-2 Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 (edited) Seen the 2025 summer set leaks 72043 starter set $49.99 72038 another starter set $49.99 72039 $99.99 72040 $14.99 72041 $29.99 72042 $99.99 72046 18+$69.99 I’m very interested to see what these starter sets will be. I’m thinking they could either by Daisy and Rosalina or Wario and Waluigi. I feel 72046 will be a diorama of SMB World 1-1 micro scale. Edited December 11, 2024 by Izzynufc-2 Quote
Lyichir Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Two new starter sets is certainly interesting, especially since it's too soon for another refresh of the existing ones. Wario and Waluigi would make the most sense as a "pair" but Daisy or Rosalina would not be unwelcome (with new characters especially appealing now that the Mario Kart sets are out and more "drivers" to choose from would be an asset). Speaking of Mario Kart, I wonder if any of these will be related to that "subtheme". I figure it's not the most likely (since there's a good chance we'd be due for other general playsets instead), but I wouldn't be opposed to more karts or track features. Quote

BrickBob Studpants Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Two new starter sets, huh? I can‘t imagine them rereleasing the current digifigs again and it‘s too soon for a new system, so these kinda have to be new characters Daisy and Wario, anyone? Quote
