Eilif Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 (edited) Some folks have managed to get noticed by creating a unique niche for themselves in the LEGO hobby. I use the term niche to describe someone doing something unique or different as opposed to someone who excells in a larger field. I read about the young man who invented RAMM, and he makes a good point about people developing their own niche or sub-theme as a way to stand out. I've noticed that this kind of specializaiton is something that a few people have done, whether it's taking Blacktron to the absolute limit, or taking the lead in reviving a long forgotten theme (fabuland?) What are EB'ers doing to stand out from the crowd? I'll start, I wouldn't say that I am "standing out" yet, but I am trying to develop a niche of modular buildings with interchangeable floors built on the Market street standard. I hope to develop this niche over the next year to include larger buildings composed of Market street modules that can be rearranged into different buildings. Hopefully it can be entered into the "individual layout" competition at Brickworld '09. Edited July 31, 2008 by Eilif Quote

Pencoin Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I cant say I've made a 'niche' at the moment but im planning to do a LEGO web comic! Quote
Sandy Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I cant say I've made a 'niche' at the moment but im planning to do a LEGO web comic! I'm trying to fit that niche with my Princess Quest, too, but I guess I stand out just being who I am - a female fan of LEGO (although you can hardly call me girly, but more so a feminist). But as I like to say, nothing is impossible with LEGO, so I think it can draw in all types of personalities. Quote
GoldenBrick Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I can't really call myself "making a niche". Although I'd like to, I'm still trying to work on my Brickton Heights city. It's a WIP, that'll take a while. However it includes my latest MOC (fire station). Quote
CP5670 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I don't really do anything distinctive. My models tend to be of a similar style as various official sets from the 90s, although with some modern techniques thrown in. At the most, I could say that I'm trying to combine the 80s/90s space factions with Technic functionality. This is something I have in mind for future models though, not any of my currently finished ones. My next model will be a step in that direction, a Blacktron carrier with several pneumatic-powered bay doors and some geared functions like a main turret with two degrees of freedom, but I have other things planned for the future that will combine space and Technic in a much more essential way. commanderbly42 Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I do interviews for another website (CABG) and occasionally make MOCs. That's about it though. Quote
Fatespuppet Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 I"ve never been one to stand out from a crowd, so I've never really gone for my own niche. If anything, I enjoy the modular designs portrayed in the Cafe Corner line of sets, and I've been trying to build my own fantasy version. I have a very simple building style(ie not ornate ), but it has allowed me to design a full range of minifig castle wall sections. The neat part is that the modularity of the walls extends to the buildings as well. Each building can be plugged into its neighbor or into the wall sections to create a truly unique city. It all started when I was asked to GM a pencil and paper RPG for friends and I wanted to give them an idea of what the buildings they were in looked like. Then, like all my projects, it just kept getting bigger and bigger. Alas, it has all been torn down, due to buying a home and moving, except a short section of wall and a gatehouse that I plan to incorporate into a new fortress MOC I'm working on.(a few of the buildings survived as well) Not really niche though. MacK Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I don't really have a niche (yet) all I do is occasionally post a MOC or two, and add to The Starwars Comic Game a bit. Maybe in the future I'll make a comic series or something . Quote
Trexxen Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 Hmm...a good question. I haven't made my niche yet, to be honest. It's mainly because I just got out of my dark ages in early 06, and during said dark times I got rid of all my old legoes, so I had to start anew - even now, the majority of my legoes comprise of Bionicle parts, as only recently have I returned to the glorious world of system. (A good third of my System Parts are on display in my room - you may know this pile of parts as Sentai Fortress XD) As such, of yet in the building world I don't really have a niche. I suppose you could say I do enjoy combining Bionicle and Lego to their fullest extent - rather than keep them exclusive from eachother, I see that they can create a great bond that will build models that surpass even those that are "truly pure", with no Bionicle influence at all. In mentality, as well, I am the bridge between the themes - but enough about that, aye? On Eurobricks...well, I again don't really have a niche. I'm just not as outstanding a personality as some of the other members, and I only post in a topic when I have something of value to add to the discussion, and as such I'm not as "out there" as some of the other members are. I suppose if you really want to look into it Mafia is my niche here, but I've been doing that for years now - so it's really not an exclusive-to-EB thing, I'm afraid. In the future I plan to expand on my Bionicle/System fusionist models, and enter the realms of Space MOCs. I will also continue to build Mecha models, as these are at the moment my true calling - heck, perhaps I'll even make some military vehicles at some point. The general theme, though, is this: When I deserve to be noticed, I will be, and until then...well, we can't all be famous, now can we? Might as well try anyways ^.~ ~Trexxen Quote

Also, I would say the TIE army game, but that's not exactly LEGO... but a lot of people make very nice creations. I can see SirNadroj's TOYS army becoming something like none other. Quote
Athos Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I'm not sure if they are niches, but I like to write illustrated stories and do vignette series. Steve Quote
SirNadroj Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Perhaps the sheer speed and rate at which I build? I can see SirNadroj's TOYS army becoming something like none other. I hope so, recruit! TOYS: http://www.flickr.com/groups/788012@N25/ Quote
hewkii9 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Well, it's not really a niche yet, but my anachronistic Castle and Viking-Force, which is also anachronistic medieval Lego have inspired at least one other Viking-Force MoC, and I'm going to be making more of them. Maybe I'll post a topic detailing guidelines for them or something. Quote
babyjawa Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I guess you could say that I'm a customizer. :P I'm not extremely well known like Jared (Kaminoan), Arealight, or even some of my internet pals, but some people know me and would say that I am a good customizer. I try to be anyways.. I never started customizing to be great and well known though. I did it because it looked fun, and it also was a great way to use my creativity. I started back in '05 and I've come pretty far. I'm always trying to learn new techniques and trying to get better at what I'm the worst at. It's a challenge, but as a perfectionist I work very hard to get good quality items. I tend not to use other people's work, I find more enjoyment out of doing something on my own... That is why I struggle with buying from vendors. :D Thanks, Zach Quote
Axel Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Well, if I'd ever make a niche it would be a TFOL niche, not AFOL. If I ever DO make a niche, it'll probably be something along the lines of 'purple clone customiser' or something like that. Hmmm...will have to buy more clones for this niche... Quote
Brainbox Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Well... I guess I've got the Bat-MOC Goody bag idea. It was just a way for me to clear a Batman MOCs and MODs back-log without creating lots of different threads. Who would have thought that it would lead to parts two and three, with number four on the way and similar thread from both Batbrick and The Penguin? Quote
Jipay Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 I made a website about European afols. Silly idea, huh? Grunts.Dr. S. Never read them before, you got me addicted Quote

Gen. Knowledge Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 WOW! everyone is nominating themselves...is there no humility? I want to nominate the Brickarms guy. I don't know him on a first name basis, and I could look it up on his website, but I am too lazy. I'm sure as he starts to branch out to different eras he will be even more popular. Some purist may not like what he is doing, but isn't that the whole point of carving out a niche, seeing a demand that is not filled and filling it. Now let's hope Brickarms comes out with an 18th century Martini-Henry Rifle with bayonet for my British Army. I'll take 1,000 of those and some pith helmets if you please. Tony Quote

I like them a lot, nice rockets and guns to support the... plastic troops. Right now, I'm in the shadows when it comes to Niche's. But wait just a couple of months, and I'll come out a LUL lover for all I know. Quote
