Hello everybody :classic:

Few months ago I added a new Emerald Night set in my trains collection. Immediately I started searching how to motorise it efficiently...

Unfortunately, being this set released 15 years ago, I could not find a motorisation solution utilising Powered Up and L Motor and I would really appreciate your input on this!

Kindly note that I have thoroughly read the very few posts related to PU (not PF) and EN motorisation but there is nothing that thoroughly explains what to do and what willl be the outcome (speed and torque wise)... only thoughts by users.

Also, during my research for motorisation I came across another extremely useful guide/site by Brendan McGrath who has published a very detailed list of the parts required to build from Pick a Brick (or Bricklink) an extra carriage for this beautiful set. Also, taking into consideration the realy hich priced window frames (may cost 200+ euros for all 10 frames to be bought) he offers an alternative approach for the second vagon which is quite interesting. :classic:

Below you can find the details on this...

Looking forward to your inputs about the motorisation :pir-thumb:

Mould King produces near-identical copies of many PF components, including those used in the Emerald Night.  I don’t know the best source for buying them in Greece, though there’s probably an EU stockist.  They should be fairly easily obtainable and are of decent quality - I’ve used a few to replace old broken PF components and some in custom stuff.  Avoid the MK remotes though - if you have a PF remote that’s excellent; if you don’t, buy one second hand.

Thank you for your reply, but as mentioned in my original post, I would like to use Powered up equipment (L Motor and Powerewd Up hub) for the motorisation and not power functions. I have another 6 trains using powered up and would like to stay in that "ecosystem".

Also, I try to avoid as much as possible 3rd party parts with the exception of train tracks of course :)

You can use Powered Up system, like people did with the Orient Express. You need to puzzle a little how to build it in nicely in the lookalike Flying Scottmann. You can change the front buffer for a red one ;-) .

At rebrickable there are some interesting wagons you can build for the 10194.

I don't know where I got the instructions to mine, but anyway this is what I made:

I have chosen to use a double trainmotor and used a double tender. The Flying Scottmann has driven in USA where a double tender was needed for the fuel and water. And I changed the connecting rods into light grey, so it's more visible when it rides.

Alright! Something I have experience of!

I originally had two Large Power Functions motors mounted in the boiler of my dark azure Emerald Night clone. However, that required a battery box in the tender, something I wanted to eliminate.

So I redesigned the boiler to house a Powered Up battery box and a PU large motor. The rear top section of the boiler and cab roof is now one piece and lifts off too power the loco on and off or change the batteries. This solution makes the loco a lot more fragile though.

I'm at work now but I'll try and remember to take some pictures later on.

Oh my...

Your setup is amazing and clearly depicts the endless potentials of the set... Still, I think that if I expand my setup thaaata much.. well, divorce will be on its way too

Regarding ther front buffer, I could not clearrly see from your pictures which part exactly you mean and could not find something in red in BL.

You certainly got my attention! Having the hub and motor both in the boiler would be ideal adding some extra weight/traction.

For Orient Express I have ordered from Lego the extra weight brick.

Any time able, would appreciate to see some photos.

I used a LEGO PF large motor and a PU Hub for my Bley Knight. The PU L motor should work in place of the PF large motor.  Plenty of room in the tender for the PU hub.

I bought the house with an attic like this, to build up a layout like this  .

This red buffer I mean, to look like a Flying Scottman :excited::

Really nice, I hope I do not come across issues since the whole process to order and receive items from BL or Lego really takes time :(

Here you go: https://imgur.com/a/SxjAl9q

The motor is held in only by the axle connection to the 12t gear. It is an axle with stop which connects into a Technic brick on the other side of the gear. Otherwise it is not mounted solidly, just by technic half pins which fit snug with the panels next to them. Drivetrain is pretty bulletproof, as it has to be with a geared transmission like this. The kids will just hit stop with a full load behind it!
