By now we've seen pretty much all the 2024 releases. Now I know having it in hand is a better way of judging than seeing it but I very much doubt that even one of us will actually get every single Lego set made this year, so I'm not sure no-one having those last few releases yet matters that much especially as most of them are magazine gifts (which I don't really expect to be in the running!).

So here are the questions!

What's the best set released in 2024?

Best D2C?

Best set under £50?

Best theme?

Best Minifigure?

I'll come back with my choices later!

Best set: 10332 Medieval Town Square, and of the more available sets I would say 60422 Seaside Harbor with Cargo Ship

Best theme: City, because it is the only original theme that gets new sets every year

Best minifigure: M-Tron Powerlifter

Best set under £50: 60431 Space Explorer Rover and Alien Life

What's the best set released in 2024? Probably the 'Family Reunion Celebration' (80113). Lego always seem to put additional effort into their attempts to crack the lucrative Chinese market. At €100, it's 50%-70% of the cost of similarly sized sets, licensed or not. All pricing aside, it's a smashing little building.

Best D2C? I always get confused at what is or isn't D2C. Medieval Market Village I suppose? To my tastes at least.

Best set under £50? Shout out to the Creator 3-in-1 Fox set (31154), but I think the (cheaper) Dreamzzz Raven set (Neverwitch Nightmare Creatures 71483) pips it for the cool factor.

Best theme? Creator 3-in1 has been consistently good this year. Most years in fact.

Best Minifigure? Halfling Druid for the DnD collection. That whole collection knocked it out of the park, but this one is the best. The printed bird, the useful torso, the new antler hood.

I´m kinda missing best GWP here ;)

Best GWP: 40712 Micro Rocket Launchpad

Best D2C?: 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale

Best set under £50? :  Dungeons and Dragons CMF

Best theme? Dungeons and Dragons (even if it is not a full theme)

Best Minifigure? Dragonborn Paladin. Just love the Torso and Leg printing so much.

Best Set? I would say the D&D CMF makes the run here aswell

  • Best Set: 910037 Mushroom House, from the Bricklink Designer Program. Adorable, and the Mushroom Village is probably going to be my winner next year. If that doesn't count, then the D&D CMF - and if that does count, then probably the Fortnite Battle Bus.
  • Best D2C: I haven't bought any this year, but probably 10332 Medieval Town Square. The X-Mansion, Barad-Dur, and the Deku Tree are also contenders, but I'm probably more likely to buy and enjoy MTS.
  • Best Set under $50: 75391 Captain Rex Y-Wing Microfighter - not only for finally giving us Rex again at a fair price, but also opening the door further to desirable, seemingly exclusive minifigs at a cheaper price point (I still want a Max Rebo or Sauron mech). 60404 Burger Truck, 75572 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack and 71431 Bowser's Muscle Car also get a shoutout for sets I bought, and I'll give a nod to 71805 Jay's Battle Mech for providing four minifigs for only $10 - I imagine a lot of kids love that one.
  • Best Theme: Video Games, but specifically, Animal Crossing - lots of new prints and minifigs, generally cheaper price points for the sets. Fortnite also deserves a nod, as does Zelda for finally existing. I'm excited for what all three could bring next year! Botanicals, Creator 3-in-1, and CMF also get a nod.
  • Best Minifigure: Very tough call... Mr. Pale, Halfling Druid, Dragonborn Paladin, Euphrasia, Fives, Sauron, Meowscles, the Choir Ghost, The Fat Friar, Bill and Charlie Weasley, Mushroom Sprite... If I include accessories, I would probably give the edge to Adult Link with the Master Sword and Hylian Shield. Fives and the Halfling Druid are a hair away, though.
  •  Best GWP: 40698 Books Are My Passion. Shoutout to 40681 Retro Food Truck, and 30662 Maple's Pumpkin Patch (though that was also a retail set).

And if I were to pick the worst ones:

  • Worst Set: 41839 Message Board: For $100, I feel like most people would rather just get something at Hobby Lobby - and save at least $50 in the process. While not bad itself, I'm also going to boo the Disney Advent Calendar for giving me false hope of getting Disney minifigs in an advent calendar, only for it to be minidolls (it's fine for what it is - it's just a me thing). 76282 Rabbid Racoon is also not a great set, but it makes me laugh.
  • Worst D2C: 41838 Travel Moments is a baffling miss - there are so many ways that set could have been better, but every wrong choice seems to have been made in the design, pricing, and presentation of the set. 31211 Mccaw Parrots is also poor.
  • Worst Set under $50: 30679 Venom Street Bike: Venom is way too overdone in Marvel - a dedicated polybag to him is not only laughable, but almost repulsive. I'm also not a fan of 43248 Inside Out 2 Mood Cubes and 76287 Iron Man and Hulk Beat Up a Wall, if polybags don't count.
  • Worst Theme: Peppa Pig. Should've been Bluey.
  • Worst Minifigure: Star Wars characters with colored eyes - it ruined Ezra, Ahsoka, Darth Rey, and a bunch of others. Give them their black pupils back, Lego! Also, anyone outside of Jack, Zero, and The Mayor in 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas. Sally's a downgrade from the CMF, and Lock, Shock and Barrell are all big misses without their masks.
  • Worst GWP: 5009086 Gasgano's Podracer - almost no publicity, very odd way to get it. 40686 Trade Federation Troop Carrier, 40730 Luke's Lightsaber, and 40693 Fell Beast will also be booed by me not for being a bad sets, but for me wanting them to be regular retail sets.

Best Set: 77073 Fortnite Battle Bus -  I haven't played all that much Fortnite but this was pretty much the perfect set to represent the game, and it gets major points for knowing its target audience and sticking to a reasonable price point while still having a solid minifig selection

Best D2C: 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter - Not sure if this is actually a D2C since I've seen other stores carrying it, but it's a black-box 'Icons' set so I might as well count it

Best Set under £50: 75387 Boarding the Tantive IV - A solid interior-based set that easily allows for connectivity if you buy multiples, plus it hits my nostalgia for the first level of Lego Star Wars II

Best Theme: Animal Crossing - just kind of a simple theme with unique minifigs and an overall charming vibe, it feels like what the Mario theme should have been

Best Minifigure: Lisan al Gaib - the figure in my pfp, which is basically Paul Atreides' head + the stillsuit and cape from Liet-Kynes

Wow! It’s like you used ESP on me. I would have selected exactly the same ones except for best minifigure. While the dragonborn paladin is indeed cool, my pick is the same as @DonQuixote’s, the vampire knight ‘Basil the Batlord’ CMF.

I did not include GWP because I am not interested in them.

Best GWP: Micro Rocket Launchpad

Best D2C?: Natural History Museum

Best set under $50? :  Aston Martin Vantage Safety Car & AMR23 (because GREEN!)

Best theme? Friends (hands down, no question!)

Best Minifigure? Film Noir Detective

Best Set? Castle Bed and Breakfast or Olly and Paisley's Family Houses (It's a tie... couldn't decide between these two amazing Friends sets!)

Worst overall LEGO product: Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams

Worst overall LEGO theme: Peppa Pig
