Me looking at the January sets:

*image that has definitely aged phenomenally and not poorly at all*

Hopefully the hierarchy will change positively.

I can’t wait to see The Batman Part II and Beyond the Spider-Verse in the same year (20??)!! Hopefully DC will be JL/non-Batman focused enough that Batman sets will be a welcome change….

Pretty sure that Blade, Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game, Ahsoka Season 2, Wolverine videogame, the Lego Temple of Doom remake, Rogue Squadron, Moon Knight season 2, Hawkeye Season 2, Taika Watiti’s SW movie, Rian Johnson’s SW trilogy and the Rey SW movie will all release in the same year as those.

I think comparing the Cavill situation to the Peacemaker/Suicide Squad cast is a little disingenuous. One is only "cemented" in the DCEU through a joke cameo at the end of a TV series that had 0 bearing on the plot and will likely be retconned to some extent in season 2, the other brings back an entire supporting Superman cast that I don't think I saw anyone clamoring for more of and the Rock's Black Adam. Yes, Waller and Harcourt were both in that film (I didn't see it so I don't know to what extent) but they weren't used as a bargaining chip by one of the biggest egos in Hollywood to derail both the film and comic universes (Black Adam suddenly being on the Justice League anyone?) and they're side characters at best, not the focal points of the whole universe.

I do feel bad for Cavill, but I couldn't possibly imagine him as the Superman in the trailer that we've just had. I see where you're coming from with the keeping of some actors and the dropping of others, but I do think it also comes down to Gunn is going to keep working with the people he has a good working relationship with vs people who don't fit his vision for the characters and are too weighed down with prior continuity.

I don't think so at all- for one thing, they lied about why they were getting rid of him. THAT'S disingenuous, to claim you're doing it for a clean slate and then through a series of retcons and rehires keep a mix of characters and films canon to the new continuity. You even bring up in your own comment that the second season of peacemaker has to retcon the first season. That's... a show having to retcon a previous season of the show is not a great example of a clean slate.

I also think- if we're gonna call stuff disingenuous- that it's disingenuous to claim the cameo from the show Gunn's keeping in-continuity doesn't matter but that the black Adam post credits scene should be a barrier to entry? Or that bringing Cavill back somehow means you have to bring back the entire MoS supporting cast? What?

Gunn has shown he's perfectly fine bringing actors over from the DCEU- including ones who were prominent or part of clunky films. Therefore, wanting a clean slate or changing the guard is clearly not the highest priority and shouldn't have been a barrier to Cavill's return.

I honestly feel like Gunn wants himself to be in the spotlight and doesn't want The Batman to overshadow him

This wasn't something that bothered me much at first- seeing the high up actually consistently talk about his plans is fine with me- but he definitely likes to have his name front and center, like in the superman trailer. If he can actually back it up and deliver a great film that isn't in his standard formula, I think he's fine to do so, but I don't have much faith about that.

Mile's VA is starting to create his own Canon Event so if it wasn't for how well the first two did, I'd legitimately put BTSV as less likely to release than TBP2.

Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game, Ahsoka Season 2

Ahsoka Season 2's not in any real trouble, it just takes forever for disney to put out season 2s for it's non-mando shows. Totally forgot the wonder woman game was even a thing- that's at SW eclipse level of just not happening at this point.

I'm shocked that 28 Years Later got made, which I'm glad, such a good franchise, should have been called 28 Months Later, I think all these movies and shows we listed will indeed release, 28 years later

Black Adam vs Superman, if only the Hierarchy of  the DC universe did change xDDDDDDDDD

RIP Batfleck and Henry Superman, you were the best to me, if only you had better writers and that Deathstroke, Arkham movie got made

But still, I'm glad with what I got in Bvs, despite if people hate it, I just wish there was a timeline where I got to see the Knightmare timeline as a movie which would be JL 2 or 3

Also unrelated but Marvel's What If is so stupid and garbage, wtf are these stories, Mechs, woman gets impregnated by a duck, instead of What If, I'll call it ''What Is This Shit?''

The Zombies and Doctor Strange episode were the only good ones IMO

It just became the Captain Carter show, could have gotten what if the other half got snapped, what if Punisher saved Tony in Afghanistan, what if Thanos arrived in the battle of NY, idk, those all sound better

Okay, I'm going to apologise upfront for my use of disingenuous. That absolutely made my comment come off way more antagonistic than it was meant to and was not my intention AT ALL. Although if I'm also misreading your repetition of disingenuous as frustration with it then again, my apologies. Internet discourse isn't a strong suit of mine, as is probably obvious from the paragraphs of text

To briefly expand my point about the cameos that you correctly critiqued, in my eyes Peacemaker's JL cameo is a punchline to the recurring Aquaman joke, whilst Black Adam's Superman cameo is a set up for Black Adam 2 and what the whole film was marketed on. Both are continuity headaches but one is far far easier to ignore than the other. I'd even argue the Peacemaker one doesn't NEED to be retconned, I just feel that it likely will be in a very small way that most audience members won't pay all that much mind to.

I'll admit that my point about the MoS cast is a MASSIVE stretch and I'm not entirely sure what I was thinking when I made it  I think I was probably drawing conclusions from the supporting casts of Peacemaker and Blue Beetle being kept, but I honestly can't expand anymore from that because it is one hell of a dumb point.

I will say, at no point did I say these should be barriers of entry, I was just pointing out the differences. The only barrier to Cavill's entry was not fitting with Gunn's creative vision, which is the precise reason he's given when asked about it. I don't know where the idea that Cavill was fired for a clean slate has come from, because I can't find an instance where Gunn said that. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but as it stands I'm not seeing where Gunn has lied about Cavill's firing :shrug_confused:

You're more than welcome to disagree with me on any of these points! I'm not trying to change your mind at all and honestly I think far too many discussions on the internet devolve into people trying to say "but I'm right tho!" and not just acknowledging that they're different people with differing opinions. Once again, sorry that some of my phrasing has been off or argumentative

To be fair with Gunn’s name in the Superman trailer, it is pretty common to have the director’s name in the trailer and on the poster. Additionally, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is generally considered to be good at a time when there are many superhero films generally considered to be not good. Saying, then, that the director of “one of the good ones” is also directing Superman is a way mitigate and counteract some of the concern over yet another superhero movie. Like you said, though, we can all say this and that, but we’ll really only know anything one the film releases.

Yeah… I had forgotten about the Miles thing. Now that kind-of puts the “Hey” face from the Spider-Verse set in a different light. Thankfully, they were not criminal acts like Ezra, but it’s definitely awkward.

In the topic of LEGO DC, I was visiting an antique toy shop and saw the 2006-2008 era Robin minifigure. I was talking with my friend about it, and he said that the only Robin he owns is the TLBM one. I know Damien has been available more recently (in this decade), but still, we haven’t gotten a proper Tim, Dick, or Jason in a while. I’m hoping that the Batcave comes with Robin, even if it’s from the films, but a new, comic-based Robin would be nice.

I'm a little confused by the complaint about having a film's director and writer in the marketing, that's a good thing? Like a big issue with the current blockbuster system is how executive driven they are, admittedly this is a weird case where the executive is also the writer and director but regardless it's a good sign that this is being pushed as a James Gunn film first instead of a DC one. Not only is that just the smart thing to do since ofc the DC brand is box office poison right now but that kinda reinforces the idea that (for now) DC is gonna just focus on letting creatives be the hook instead of the brand or and endless string of unfulfilled set ups

No problem, that's fair.

I get what you're saying, but I still don't fully understand it. Peacemaker features the DCEU justice league- whether or not it was comedic, they are directly shown and interacted with in a show Gunn has designated as canon. Black Adam isn't canon. The post credits scene could have been The Rock looking directly into the camera and saying "Look, it is the version of superman played by Henry Cavill, any future films containing this actor as superman are therefore continuations of this, the black adam cinematic universe, formerly known as the DCEU" and it wouldn't matter because black adam isn't canon to the DCU (and most of the GA didn't see it or won't remember it existed). If you are expecting your audience to understand that the cast of a movie can be carried over as the same characters in a different canon (Blue Beetle, various suicide squad characters), why not one more?

This one's on me- I know I've seen it somewhere, but I can't find specifically where Gunn himself said those exact words. That said, Henry Cavill said it was due to "changing the guard", which is a pretty similar sentiment.

I'm not saying it's super unique or anything, but not every director does it, and he is one of the ones who definitely does.

He's done a great job with the guardians films, I'm just saying that given that all of his other recent superhero projects have been the same basic concept as the guardians films (TSS, Peacemaker, Creature Commandos all follow the same general concept, down to lovable animal (or plant) sidekick.)

I mean, not really. "Clean slate" says he explicitly wants to get rid of all the old elements and thus is hypocritical. "Changing of the guard" literally just means his vision is different to who proceeded him, why reinvent the characters who already fit in his vision as he had made them becomes an understandable stance there.

I think the peacemaker situation is overly confusing, assuming there is an explanation in the show for why series 1 doesn't match up (like if he just hallucinated the JL or something) I think it'd be much cleaner if he just said "you'll see what continuity it's in when the season releases" or whatever.

But I think something people in the know don't seem to get is that it doesn't matter here, because from what we've seen all the confusing continuity shit is exclusively in the shows.

The reason that you can't just have a standalone Superman movie that keeps the guy who played him last is that the movie needs to appeal to a much broader audience than season 2 of Peacemaker or Creature Commandos. If you make a movie headlines by someone from the old DC universe every normal person will assume they're connected and trying to explain they're not will just confuse them more, none of the movies so far announced are seemingly gonna feature any of the old actors from other projects, that's all stuck to streaming shows, mainly animated ones too, the people who watch those are gonna be the type to know or staunchly not care about what's canon and what's not. They're not touching the Suicide Squad or Blue Beetle characters outside of TV for the time being so they can get away with it without alienating the regular people who don't know who Walter Hamada is.

What did you guys think of DC Tales of the Multiverse Season 3? I personally hate the fact that they keep forcing Lois Lane’s Superwoman as the main character when it should be an anthology series. I find it funny that Ganthet was essentially punished by the other guardians for making her the mc. Also wth was that storyline where Cat Grant married and had a child with Detective Chimp?! Is she the Deep?

How come Batman was only in one episode of season 1?

I generally dislike the direction DC has taken with stage 4-5 since Justice League: Final Crisis. I feel it’s weird that they were building up the Antimonitor as the big bad of stage 4 only to replace him with Henry Cavill’s Black Adam.

At least DC Adversaries is a great game. Who do ya’ll main? I personally am a GL and GA guy. But Krypto is an absolute nightmare to fight.

Two thing I think a lot of people are overlooking when it comes to the Cavill situation is that 1) Cavill did not have a contract to continue playing Superman when he filmed that Black Adam scene and 2) James Gunn was already working on rebooting Superman before that scene happened. If there’s anyone to be mad at for the treatment of Cavill, it’s The Rock for convincing him to film a cameo for Black Adam so they could sell more tickets for his movie and Walter Hamada for having zero control over who could use what characters that led to this situation.

You know on that subject, I checked the other day and Nighwing figures in the UK are all in the 30ish quid range. It makes sense as the Batfamily is super popular with the tik tok generation but it's insane as I swear a few years back you could get the polybag or 2019 ones for about a fiver. It's genuinely insane how, even ignoring all the rest of DC's roster that the core Batfamily members aren't being produced regularly.

Is TSS canon to the DCU?

I think people VASTLY underestimate the general audience's ability to understand the concept of multiple universes. They've seen three spider men in the same movie, they know Wolverines can be in different continuities with the same face, I really don't think it would be an issue at all.

Yeah, I never liked the Tales of the Multiverse show. The comics have had some good storylines, but the show felt like it just had some weird ones. Lois Lane's Superwoman was a cool episode concept, but every subsequent time she showed up felt like a wasted slot we could have used for a new concept. It was also waaaaay to comedic. I don't mind the occasional party wonder woman or "what if Alfred became Doomsday" episode, but there were too many, and a weird focus on OCs - I have no interest in watching Cat Grant and Detective Chimp's kid, or that random Nordic tribesman they gave a mother box to. (Actually, scratch that, that sounds hard as hell. Nordic invasion of Apocalypse would be awesome.)

Your mistake is believing that lego is focusing on the batman universe rather than on batman himself specifically. Any character besides Batman, Jonkler, or Harley Quinn is extraneous.

Sure, but in all those cases they're supporting roles in stories explicitly about the multiverse, you can explain in the movie what's up, that's different to if they decided MCU Spidey from the jump would be played by Andrew but not have any of his films be canon to the MCU nor bring back any of of his supporting cast. It's kinda an apples to oranges change, the average person who sees the poster or trailer who knows nothing about the behind the scenes is gonna naturally assume they're connected, very different to two movies where the premise is explicitly "we're gonna open portals to the old movie universes and get the old to meet the new."

Sure, the GA might get it if you explain it clearly enough in interviews but why would you do that, what do you gain? Like regardless of anyone's opinions on the films he was in they were all controversial and 4 out of 5 underperformed so it's not gonna be a guaranteed nostalgia trap like the two Marvel examples. Obviously the writer/director of the film doesn't feel he's right for his film so it's not gonna help the story on it's own terms. it's too much work to convey for no substantial reward.

They could even make a two-set wave with a Superman set.
