Probably we will get some new trains as at least the cargo train is now that 60336 and 60335 are getting phased out!

Of course we heard the rumors about an arctic train but will that be a train in the classic sense? Discuss here :)

Brickfanatics states that 60198 Cargo Train and 60337 Express Passenger Train will retire in 2025. Will they retire in July or December 2025?

I don't have any information on them, but I wouldn't be surprised if there would be new train sets in summer at least.

Then a July 2025 retirement date would be more likely. I hope they also release a new train station next year.

Ha!  Just came to make this thread but I see @JopieK’s done it already!  No problem about the list - I like formalities like that.

 

Not sure about this Arctic train, though I guess we’ll have to see.  I’ve seen a few MOCs of Arctic trains to go with previous Arctic city subthemes.  If it’s under the Arctic subtheme as it appears, I’d expect it to be of similar livery and design

If you're interested in traditional railway-style sets, I would hesitate to get excited about the rumored arctic train... most arctic-themed sets so far have been focused on exploration and research, and if that continues to apply to the upcoming arctic sets I'd sooner expect a rumored "train" set to be an "overland train" or "trackless train" composed of several linked research vehicles. There's a chance that a train set might be a snow-clearing rail-based train of some sort, but in the absence of any sort of more specific information I'd consider that far from a certainty.

Rebrickable has 60198 and 60337 retiring in December 2025, as far as I know they're using data from Lego.com that lists when sets are planned to retire.  Though of course until it happens it's not certain.

If 60198 is really going to retire in December 2025, will this set become the one that was available for the longest time among Lego Trains ? Had they been selling any other Train set for more than 7 years ?

Interesting….historically the new sets have entered production in summer, so that would give a six month gap with no City trains unless they release the predicted 2026 lot in January 2026

Not sure about the rest of 9V, 12V, and 4.5V (before my time), but since 2000 it’s certainly the longest, by a margin of just over 3 years.

Okay, "Express Train" definitely sounds more like a traditional train set. Should be interesting to see.

60468 is conspicuously missing from the list...might be an urban passenger train to pair with the station. Looking forward to the Arctic train, hopefully it's not a dud.

60473 is also a missing number when comparing this list and the winter wave launching Jan 1.

The piece count is lining up with the Arctic Express being an actual train. Themed train sets (Police, Fire, Military, etc.) have been a thing for a long time in model railroading and its kind of surprisingly that LEGO has taken so long to jump on the band wagon.

Wild theory: What if LEGO didn't manage to get the Polar Express license, but seeing how many Polar Express submissions have been made on IDEAS, decided to just create an "Arctic Express" that can easily do duty as the Polar Express (e.g. if you buy 2 to make a proper engine)? 

It wouldn't be the first time - look at the Horizon Express or the Emerald Night ... neither of those have anything of a license, but are easily recognizable as what they are supposed to be.

Granted, this is in the City line based on the set number, so perhaps it is very simplified - but who knows?

It's possible. I think the main hiccup would be that LEGO has pushed 'modern/green' tech for their City line and would bristle at inserting a steam locomotive and historic cars into the theme.

The leak seems to tie it into the Arctic explorers subtheme, so while anything is possible, I'm assuming it will be an science / exploration type train set.

I mean, the Orient Express set was just a year or two ago. While Lego City tries to stay optimistic and relevant to the modern day, Lego rarely has objections to including historic subjects outside that theme unless they depict sensitive subjects like war.

That said, I doubt an "Arctic Express Train" in the City theme would be imitating the Polar Express, not just because it's flying MUCH closer to the sun trademark-wise than a real-world historic locomotive, but also because the City theme tends to focus on specific sorts of subject matter that a specific pastiche of a Christmas book/movie like that wouldn't really match.

Lego's policies discourage depictions of fossil fuels in contemporary sets, but are more relaxed for historic themes. Thing is though that City is not a historic theme. Steam engines belong in Creator (or Icons etc.).

I am still wondering about 60336 freight train.

At least in german catalogs, it was only available for less than one year, and was replaced by it's predecessor 60198.
I cannot remember that something like this has ever happened before.

Pricing has just been announced for the Wild West Train in the Bricklink Designer's Program: £249.99, $279.99, €279.99.  Would be interested in reading people's thoughts on this set with the pricing information.  Not surprised at the price, but looking more closely at the set, I wish they had left out some of the items driving up the price.  For example, do we need 12 minifigures for a set with one small passenger car?  The track looks like standard Lego track on a roadbed made from plates and some other enhancements in tan/brown, are these needed/desireable?  The designer has stated the model is designed to be motorized, so I have no interest in enhancing this as a static display.  Also can't help thinking the price would be lower if the windmill and water tower had not been included.  They are nice looking models, but not essential to the train, and certainly can be built separately, or as models in their own right.  I would have been much more excited if this had been just the train and a few minifigs at a sub $200 price.

I don't see any train or train-related sets in the next two rounds (series 5 or 6), so this is all there will be for train sets for a while through BDP.
