Oh dear. The length of my 'Things I Want to Make' list has increased by about 1.5 times.

Not sure why the non-licensed part would affect your list. Non-licensed means you cannot brand a car as being a Porsche or something (in case of a car competition). You can still build a Porsche like model. Just like a VTOL Helicopter vs an Osprey.

It does give me a bit of a headache though. If you can't make a mech, but instead you call it an animal...

Not sure where to draw the line.

Yeah, I know it is still vague. What I meant is a four legged mech with boxy shape is not allowed. It has to feature some "animal" mechanism like moving head, mouth, tail...

Because from what I understand, this can be considered a licensed model. Arcade cabinet question was along similar lines.

Don't worry about stuff like that. The non-licensed rule was predominantly introduced to avoid people making branded vehicles which would be rated higher.

So, nothing to worry about.

Thanks. Anyway I still thinking between least 2 automata, 2 GBC, 1 mindstorm robot, 1 arcade cabinet.

2 GBC

Let's not do GBC.

I will include it in the list. We had a separate contest for that.

Oh and sorry, but I have one more question that's on my mind. I think there was a similar discussion above, but I didn't understand the conclusion. I've decided what I'm going to make, so this is a curious question that has nothing to do with my current build.

Are these kind of characters allowed? Technically those are not vehicle but also can't count as animal or some living things.

I am thinking along the lines of "not being able to move itself, except animals".

This comes to mind.

It feels like your example is still some sort of moving vehicle/model. We are aiming at household appliances, animals, mechanical contraptions etc.

We should probably aim for something stationary, except when it's an animal.

Same! The length of the ‘what I can make’ list has not yet improved though…

Vehicle:
A thing used for transporting people or goods, such as a car, plane, truck, etc

Is by that definition a roller coaster a vehicle?

Are illegal building techniques allowed?

Posted

Quick question: is an illegal building technique having the bricks put together illegally, or getting them there illegally? (i.e., slightly bending them, or twisting, etc.)

Okay. Also another question: many pop-up town fairs often rent rides that literally unfold from trailers. Would this count as a vehicle because it’s a trailer, or would it not count because that isn’t its objective?

I think people can apply common sense logic to it,...

You would be surprised

@bruh If you want to build a pop-up town fairs ride maybe just make it unfold from static base.

By the way; I have been thinking a bit about the example of the four legged mech from the videogame or anime. What is your stance on this? I don’t want this contest to turn into a mech contest. That is not what I had in mind? Like to know your thoughts. Somehow a mech feels like a vehicle.

Puh, luckily i plan to build a two legged mecha.

...just kidding. I'm just brainstorming to find something that's feasible & fun. I definitely plan to build some kind of animal that moves. The mechanism is the first to come. As soon as it works and is fun to operate, i focus on building the shape. And having more options to chose from simplifies the whole process.

Some mechs from Horizon act as vehicles(!). Some can even be used as mountables. But a tiny group is very animal like. I only would have taken the latter ones into account, ...to have a wider range of interesting things to chose from.

Possible that in the end i do a prehistoric chicken anyway.:dwacko:

No rollercoasters. No illegal building techniques.

Wait, no illegal building techniques? I don't recall that being a rule on any past contests, and I feel like that could get really complicated really fast...

We have never enforced illegal building techniques. That is true.

But you make it sound like all models are always full of that? Is that the case?

To be honest; I don’t really mind. The jury will decide whether they like that or not.

No trailers.

Been off the forum a while and came back at the right time. I remember a tyre machine was a C model from an old technic set. Understand what sort of machines you’re after, but I have found it humorous with all the people trying to squeeze one type of vehicle or another into the competition. But I do understand how it’s difficult to clearly define a thing that moves trying to remove cars, boats, etc but enable animals. I’ll have to get my thinking cap on.

@Jim I find it a bit weird that all moving things are disallowed except animals. Also, it seems from the general discussion thread that many people like the idea of the animal contest. So I'd say why not keep the animals for the animal contest and just say that in this contest all things that can move themselves are disallowed? So a robot arm would be allowed, but a walking mechanism would not. Would that make sense?

I would say the idea to have this mixed contest is to make an Animal Contest possible. As animal builds are often seen as "to different" or "to difficult" chances are high that a lot of people refuse to participate.

kinetic scultpture of a galopping horse - possible with selectable walking modes (walk-gallop-race etc)
kinetic sculpture of a dragon flapping wings, maybe in a tensegrity construction
weaving machine
windup insect
human head with expressions
working gun
music machine/instrument
drumset sculpture with working drummer figure
Solar system/planets and moons sculpture

Just a few ideas from the top of my head
