Ah i saw this at the last event in Billund, i also saw those playingcards, as well as pirate towels, shirts, the pirate figs still pictured on the plastic bags and what not....

I really hope that we get a new pirate line next year, but to me this isn't a real big sign.....

I'm SO EXCITED! Pirates are more expensive than ever these days and it'll be nice to have new set available to keep the pirate market open! I am already dreaming of the days when my old pirates will look from their crow's nest and spot a never-before-seen vessel on the horizon!

i'm sorry to crush your hopes, people, but let's put a few things in perspective, ok?

1) these products you're all quoting are sold in the Lego theme parks for several years now. Clothes, hats, swords,... whatever, they've been there since my first visit to the parks 5-6 years ago... nothing new there...

2) those parks aren't affiliated to Lego anymore, they just buy their stuff based on their attractions

3) many attractions of the parks are from the pirate theme, like the classic pirate "swinging" boat, you can find them in nearly any theme park in the world, no real link with lego in there

4) Lego has released duplo pirates a while back, so if there were a link between lego customers and the parks then it's that link, not a link between the parks' products and some new mysterious pirate line for 15-25 year olds...

5) the parks mainly target a very young type of customer, not the 15 year old pirate fan... so if we do get more pirates, it'll be duplo stuff

6) the reason why they sell weird products like pirate ice cubes is because people will simply buy anything when they're in those theme parks, lego or not-lego related... (yes, i've got these pirate ice cubes too )

7) I'm not sure if there's production capacity for a pirate line. We know that MM may disappear , we know that exo force will be gone in 2009, but i don't know if that's enough room to set up an entirely different line.

i only see 1 element that suggests Lego pirates is still somewhere in the Lego company and that's the two minifigs we saw on that photo with the other figs, that's all...

I totally agree with you, darthperson!

And secondly: If these two accessory sets wouldn't be part of a new Lego Pirate theme it would be much to expensive and absurd to design a new signature.

For me this is evidence enough that we'll see a new Pirate theme next year.

And to TLG's capacity: Since legomilk mentioned that there'll be two new themes next year - why shouldn't there be room for a Pirate theme?! (It's very likely that Pirate and Space will be the two new themes.)

But be aware that a/the new Pirate theme could be totally different to the classic Pirates themes: There might be big octopuses, big mutant sea creatures (like in the new Aquazone theme last year) and perhaps even ugly fantasy creatures (like in the new Castle theme ) which (could) destroy the whole new theme. But of course it can elsewise be and we'll get a very nice new Pirate theme with a lot of classic elements.

I wouldn't exactly call the logo new. All it is is the LEGO logo followed by 'Pirates' in the castle font which is essentially the classic font 'Old English Text', just put in shiny, weathered-looking letters.

I'm sure a corporation like LEGO can afford photo shop.

However, I have hopes for the theme. This still almost confirms it, considering the fact that the peg leg is no longer produced (and we haven't seen the hook since Alpha Team) and still appears in the ice-cube tray.

As for your monster point, I agree that it could be disastrous for LEGO. However, if they make realistic creatures, like a whale, Giant Squid (I really would like this, in the 19th century [i know, after pirates, but still], at least one ship chased down and captured a specimen of Giant Squid), and other sea life that could be threatening to a ship.

This find, combined with the reintroduction of other pirate-y elements (ship's wheels, bicornes, cutlasses, conquistadore helmets [the real name of which escapes me at the moment, something along the lines of 'picarion', or 'picaroon']), the spotting of a new Imperial style soldier and vest w/ tatto pirate at Chandler Fashion Center's LEGO store, bodes well for the theme being around next year.

All the LEGO Group’s markets saw sales increases. The highest increases were seen in the classic product lines LEGO City, LEGO Technic and LEGO Creator as well as LEGO Star Wars, which is well on its way to become another classic line. Also the LEGO Group’s sale of educational materials as well as direct sales to consumers showed good growth in 2007.

Boost for classic product lines

Sales during the first six months of this year were DKK 2,966m compared with DKK 2,821m in the corresponding months of 2006. The increase was due in particular to higher sales of such classic lines as LEGO City and LEGO TECHNIC and a range that has become a classic: the LEGO Star Wars line.

We can see that:

A. Lego has some money to work with.

B. Lego knows classic lines are selling well. Pirates is a classic line and should fit this trend.

C. Lego knows pirates are in demand, because they can see:

- Pirates of the Caribbean Mega Bloks sets are selling well

- Enlighten knockoffs proved Lego pirates are still in demand

- They can see the pirate fans right on this site

I hope that if TLG releases a new Pirate theme they use the old cannons from the older themes (but these which the shooting function) because they could be used for a new Wild West (Factory) set, too . And secondly it surely wouldn't look nice if they only use "cannons" like in the pics of the MOCs (which are nervertheless really nice) above.

They are probably HK sets because they use dollars too. $169 works out to be about £12 which is pretty similar to other LEGO dart shooters.

This evidence really doesn't do anything for me here. I believe that these products were in fact produced by an independent entity affiliated with the Legoland parks, a branch of the Lego Group of companies that has been producing all sorts of pirate merchandise to accommodate their rides for several decades. This also might be why the degree of realism for this firearm seems somewhat above what The Lego Group usually likes including in their playsets.

Anyway, here we see a single line of text reading "Pirate" which means relatively nothing to me and a skull & scimitar logo. However, this emblem, one designed in 2006 for the opening of the "Pirate Shores" attractions in California, proves that these products have not been designed in conjunction with a new LEGO playset line but in fact simply another round of park merchandise. In short, this isn't anything new. A pirate line for 2009 is indeed a possibility, but this isn't an example of any solid proof of it- the minifigures from the display case are.

Not true - not only has all the traditional Pirate Captain garb been produced for the Captain Redbeard keychain which I've seen in local Lego stores for years now but the pegleg was also produced in pearl silver for a Harry Potter set, 4767, released in 2005.

I bought one when I took the family to Legoland, CA this summer. I like the silly stuff so I had to get it to match my brick ice-cube tray.

The skull & crossbones and fish skeleton work really well. The Cap'n Redbeard sections don't work as well as I am seldom able to remove them with the hook intact. Even so, I am always amused to see all of them floating in my Coke.

I look at them as more of a souvenir item from my trip than a strictly LEGO purchase. I also purchased laminated Legoland driver's licenses for my kids and Legoland shirts. Branded merchandise can go overboard but some can be fun.

I think the thing people forget when whining about these ice cube trays is that if they buy one they have an unlimited supply of trans-clear parts.
