a guy from somewhere Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Don’t know why it hasn’t been mentioned but the set pics have leaked guys. Erlangs mech looks interesting, although very spindly for a £75 set. Looks like we get Erlang, MK, a guard, a civilian and Monkey King. I love the dog shoulder armour but cmon this should have come with a small dog mech or something. The celestial creature looks to be somewhat like the dragon that released this year for Chinese new year, although the body is more elephant like. Piggy, Mei, Sandy and big Mo are included. Plus the kid obviously, and a guard. Looks like Mei has a flyer that detached from the saddle on the back. Really like this one ngl. Just sad that these are the only sets we are getting, and likely our last. I hope to be proven wrong though. Quote

Lyichir Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 CIIE (the China International Import Expo), an event where in past years Monkie Kid and Chinese Traditional Festival sets have tended to be revealed, spans from tomorrow until the tenth of the month. Both theme sets have been leaked online already, the Chinese new year sets are a brick built Fan and some other accessories (not really familiar with them) and a weird mini figure stand type build for the other set. Obviously we are likely all familiar with the 2 monkie kid sets that have leaked, im hyped to see the new figs and the builds in more detail, although I have to say both dont really interest me. Apparently there will be little monkie kid content for 2025 due to the shows production having to catch up, and it will return in 2026 with a fresh wave. Thats just a rumour ive seen a couple of times, so take it with a handful of salt. Hopefully though the theme doesnt end, because I need more monkie kid. Ive been trying to pick up some of the older sets, I managed to get an amazing deal on the galactic explorer so I'll post my thoughts about that when it arrives. Been really trying to hunt down the ring of fire set, probably my biggest regret not picking that up when it was available. I hate how expensive monkie kid is on the aftermarket, you have to look really hard for anything below its original price, and those that are are generally sets that aren't as highly rated by the community (hence I snagged the galactic explorer for half off its original price). Sets like flower fruit mountain, macaques mech, the ring of fire and the team secret HQ are so ridiculously expensive now. I also was looking through the sets and only one figure of Tang in his regular clothes has ever been released, what is up with that? I would have expected a re-release by now, they keep putting my man in tank tops! Quote

Yeah, I've seen those leaks too... but an official reveal tends to offer a heck of a lot more info than early leaks do. More pictures, better pictures, etc. If the small number of rumored Monkie Kid sets is just to give the production time to cook (instead of being a sign of the theme ending) that's a huge relief. I don't mind getting a smaller number of sets if enough of those sets are good, especially with other themes like Ninjago and Dreamzzz (along with the occasional City or Friends set) also vying for my attention. It is a shame that Monkie Kid tends to be hard to find secondhand (due in no small part to its reduced distribution outside of Asia). Nice get on a half-price Galactic Explorer, though—I had no idea it was less highly rated by some but I personally loved it, and all the characters in matching spacesuits are super cute! Personally I've gotten most of the sets I've desired each year, though there's a few that didn't make the wishlist that I sorta wish I could find a good deal on (like the Team Van which I would've liked to have mainly for that cute arcade machine). Currently weighing whether or not I'll have the same semi-regret about the Team Power Truck for its cute pinball machine that's straight out of the show's first season. And yeah, Tang has often been one of the less prevalent figs and only one version of him in his original outfit was ever released. :/ Part of that is that unlike the rest of the main cast he didn't show up in sets until the theme's second year, and part of it is probably a factor of him being one of the less exciting/action-oriented characters in the theme (at least until recent seasons when he's begun some spiritual training of his own). I'm not sure if we'll ever get a re-release to be honest, since it's probably more likely that they update his outfit for the show along with the fig to keep things fresh (much like how each year has its own version of MK instead of retreading the classic look). Yeah I’m hyped for the pictures, and also hoping it is just downtime for the show to catch up on because from what I understand the show is actually a huge part of the themes identity within legos consideration of it, much more than what consumers consider. It was closely developed with the first wave of sets in the documentary so I assume the same is happening with all waves. Yeah I’m really happy with the galactic explorer, it’s one I never really considered but at half the original price I couldn’t pass it up, I love building spacecraft and even if I didn’t love it, it’s a lovely parts pack with some great figs. Here in the UK there was a weird period of time where you could find the team van for like £45-60 which I am kicking myself for not taking advantage of, that would have been a real win. Nowadays it goes for about its original price so I can’t complain too much (unlike the ring of fire and the macaque mech, I just want a macaque figure!) Tangs 1 appearance is definitely infuriating, and I have no doubt he won’t be rereleased, as you said they keep the designs fresh for the sets. I’ll be honest regarding the arcades, they’re pretty simple builds of you can put them together with parts from an existing collection, and personally the team power truck is by far the worst of the team vehicles, it feels somewhat empty in the back. That pinball machine definitely pulls its weight. If you are in the UK I saw a listing for the team power truck on eBay for £30 without figures, which if you’re not looking at the figs that’s a decent deal IMO. I keep tabs on most of the second hand sites I know and check for new MK listings. I thought there was a brick list for sets with buildable arcades, if I have time tomorrow I’ll throw one together to try and find all the sets that include them. Off the top of my head, Ninjago city gardens, team van, team power truck, lion guardian, drone copter. Anything else? Quote
lyf Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 Does anyone actually know what’s happening with Monkie Kid? I’ve been trying to do some digging and it’s so odd. It’s doing well in China, so we know LEGO doesn’t have much reason to can it. Many sets have been said to be in limbo or cancelled and I didn’t know why until today. Apparently a major voice actor for the show has said they THINK Monkie Kid was cancelled but that they also weren’t sure. LEGO does not keep their voice actors in the loop at all. I spoke to Jack De Sena at a con and he said he didn’t even know season 5 released until it dropped earlier that week. What we know for (somewhat) certain is that production on the show is halted, but that for any mean it’s cancelled. I feel that the reaction in the West for the animation switch was similar in China, which could possibly mean LEGO is switching animation studios? Several of the Wildbrain members seem to either say they’re not working by on the show anymore or are looking for work. I don’t know how the industry in animation works as well, but it seems a lot of the Wildbrain team aren’t currently on the project. An animation switch could make sense with the reaction? The switch between seasons 4 and 5 was planned (and rushed) so it wasn’t much of a gap, but this was likely more sudden if it’s true? It would align with sets being in limbo since you can’t release sets without the show to market them. Everything’s so up in the air that I really don’t know. All of this is purely speculation, but I feel after it was previously confirmed, the show wouldn’t be canned out of nowhere? I feel they’d atleast finish season 6. There also isn’t financial incentive for it to be dropped seeing as it does very well in Asia, which is what they want. If anyone knows anything about it, feel free to chime in. It’s just really confusing. It feels like us fans are being dragged in opposite directions for what the fate of the theme actually is. I’d assume we’d get some info at the CIIE if the show was canned, right? Quote

Considering that Lego stores in the u.s don’t carry monkie kid sets anymore, it feels like the theme’s days are numbered. When I was at Disney springs last month, an employee there told me that after they removed the monkie kid sets, more people would come in asking where the Monkie kid sets were. So the theme still has fans. Quote

I’d assume we’d get some info at the CIIE if the show was canned, right? I said before on a previous post but the main rumour right now is that the theme is on a bit of a break to let the show team catch up with the set team, due to the massive animation switch. I’ve not heard about the wild rain members not working on the show now, which is disappointing. If I had to guess they will try and get one more wave out of monkie kid and then call it there, the show seems to be aiming for season 6 to be the final throwdown between good and evil. It would be a huge shame if this is the end for monkie kid, it’s had such an awesome run and I echo the sentiment that the first wave of sets as a whole were life changing. What came after has been just as good. Hopefully it can last, make sure to show support of the theme, but I think the main decider will be the Chinese market, which is kinda out of our control. Speaking of which, pictures of both sets are now online. As predicted, that mech does look way better in clearer images. Still not good enough to see figs but I like the proportions a bit more and there’s even a place for the celestial hound, which I love! Not a fan of MKs build, but that’s easy to remoc into something else. The mythical quilin creature seems interesting but sadly very stiff, but I like the build otherwise. Both rumoured to be 80 dollars. Ok, so sorry for the repeating posts, but Dylan chow on Instagram has posted better pictures of the sets in hand at the China expo. The creature and the mech both look way better in person, and the figures are actually pretty good. Love Monkey king, and MK has still got new side leg printing so I think they may still be throwing some investment behind the theme. Sandy has lost his mohawk, but Mo seems new. Can’t see Meis printing much, and pigsy looks new. He also has a brand new dumpling piece. Unfortunately I can’t see the Erlang figure as the mech covers him pretty well. The celestial hound has printing though! Quote

So the theme still has fans. I wouldn't judge the theme's prospects based on U.S. or European sales. The Chinese market is what this theme was mainly made for, so that's the market that makes or breaks the theme's success—availability elsewhere has always been secondary to that. Anyway, the new sets look great! Erlang's mech is fantastic—the dog motifs are great and while some of the build is similar to Mei's mech from this year, there's ultimately nothing wrong with sticking with working solutions to mech design challenges. The Qilin looks a little boxy for my taste, but less so than the Lion Guardian from year 2 that I still ended up getting. Quote
SpacePolice89 Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 Are the Monkie Kid sets imported to Europe and North America from China or are they made locally for each market? What factory code is printed on the boxes? Quote
a guy from somewhere Posted November 6, 2024 Posted November 6, 2024 Now that the sets are up on Lego.com, I’m happy to see Erlang has my favourite type of face print, ones where the minifig mouth is obscured with a mask or breathing apparatus. This one’s obviously a bit more ornate than Sci-fi but I think I can make it work. Stellar figures! They are still giving my goat Mr Tang the strangest outfits though just please rerelease his dronecopter outfit. Quote

While I haven’t looked recently, all parts to that Mr. Tang weren’t available through B&P(and haven’t looked elsewhere for him either). I really hope this theme hasn’t reached its end. It’s given us such great mechs & locations. The minifigs have been fantastic & a fun lesson in Chinese folklore on the side. Quote

Lyichir Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Built Erlang's mech today! Really satisfying set. Yes, the legs and feet are mostly retreading the design of Mei's mech from last year, but in fairness, that was a very effective design as far as shaping, proportions, and articulation are concerned. And the head, wider torso and cockpit, staff, and ornamental dog-shaped shoulders make the whole thing look highly distinctive regardless. Great figs too. I know a lot of people wish we'd get a more classic-looking Tang since his main outfit only ever showed up in one set, but I really like his look in this set, which gives me the vibe of a dapper world traveler. Erlang and the Celestial General look great too, as does Sun Wukong. MK's outfit is repeated from last year (and I wish it included the gold shoulder pads from the mini-mech set, since I don't have enough of those for all the figs who used them last year), but I do love the little jet-bike sub build he gets. I ordered the Qilin too and it just arrived today, but I'll probably wait a bit before building it (not to get into politics but things have been really depressing in the U.S. recently and I want to save some fun sets for days when I really need an escape from it all). I hope they maybe drop a surprise set or two in the summer (despite rumors suggesting otherwise), but even if they don't, I'll be eager to see what Lego is cooking up for next year. What I've heard suggests that the small number of sets this year might be because Lego is taking extra time to develop next year's show and sets, so I'm hoping they're planning to bring the theme back in a big way. Six to seven years in feels like about when we could realistically expect a big theme refresh (sort of like Ninjago and Friends have gotten in the past)... Quote
