"The humans are mining for crystal energy and shipping it back to earth in their space shuttle, but the Aliens want it for themselves! "

So...in Mars Mission, I just want to clarify: are /both/ the humans and 'aliens' NOT native to Mars? I know its been said before, but just to confirm, the humans /are/ the ones at fault right? They're taking the crystals that rightfully belong to the aliens (if they are indeed from Mars).

I can't but feel very uncomfortable at how the lego website is like a huge human propaganda site promoting the humans' mission on Mars. So...The humans are stealing the crystals (for themselves) and yet its wrong for the aliens wanting their own crystals?

Like someone mentioned before, whatever happened to Lego Space being about exploration and cooperation with alien races?

Anyway, I have to admit though, there is a lot more potential for 'cool' sets in war.

Welcome to Eurobricks, Phaz-Ing!

As Pencoin said, the aliens are also not from Mars, it was confirmed in a Lego Club Magazine (in the alien language). :sweet:

Well, there were Martians in the Life On Mars theme that got on fine with the humans, presumably they allowed the humans to mine on their planet.

Ah ok that really clears things up. Still, I don't see the difference between the humans wanting the crystals, and the aliens wanting them. In a previous review by someone- they showed the aliens being sucked dry for energy in a human vehicle!

Surely in real life humans would at least attempt to discuss things over with the aliens before deciding to capture them and wipe Mars dry of resources. Who knows? Maybe the aliens need the crystals for survival.

Both groups want the crystals for their energy, but I think they are now battling because the the aliens are born warriors (bred to fight) and their only aim is to use the crystals for powering their battleships. The humans had to convert their mining vehicles so they were equipped for mining and defense against the aliens. :alien:

It's actually far more serious than that. When the mars mission site first was released, they had a small game where you played as a human collecting crystals. If the aliens catched up to you and you lost, you heard eating sounds and a burp.

That whole game basically summed up the premise of the MM storline: the humans started out peaceful and went to Mars just for exploration, until the aliens captured some of their pilots and ate them. Only then did the human fight back against the cannibalistic aliens. In summary, the humans are fairly peaceful, while the aliens are barbaric.

Quite right, but the aliens don't eat each other, do they?

Well, I've always sided with the aliens myself. Seeing the poor thing being sucked dry in the Crystal Reaper made me believe this. Even if they eat humans, it's probably because they're just hungry. It's like if a tiger ate a person - does that mean that we can just suck them dry for power?

So yeah, I'm a support of the jellies.

Unless you know a large alien population, I wouldn't really worry about it. It's all fun and games, and we are all humans here. I know you are worried about the underlying context of it, but the majority of the people influenced by toys are kids, and they won't really see into it that deeply.

Even so, the actual Lego storylines are interesting. Or at least they are to me.

Really??

Does anyone have a pic of this online I'm rellay curious now.

My own assumption was that given the odd 'biotechnological' feel of the alien ships, and the similarity of colors between them and the crystals. as well as the green honeycomb stuff seen in many box arts... Is that the aliens are actually some form of silicon-based(cyrstaline?) life forms. Like the crystal fields are their home and they need it to survive....

Hence the humans found crystals and started mining, inadvertantly starting a war with the aliens because they didnt understand the signifigance... thus both sides think the other is evil...

At any rate I like my story better, leaves much more room to play with....

Hey you never know, the aliens might be similar colored to the crystals because they need it to survive. Probably because the humans harvested the crystals so fiercely, they needed to eat that human to retrieve the residual crystal radiation in order to survive.

Mars Mission (Epilogue):

Human 1: Ok, mission complete: Mars is harvested.

Alien 1 (in garbled alien language): NO WAIT YOU MUSN'T! the crystals are highly radioactive and can only harm your species! do not bring it to earth!

Human 2 (firing blaster at alien face): Shut it, alien.

-2000 years later-

Human population annihilated.

A game on the Lego website, Crystalien Conflict, would probably answer your queries. I assume it is Lego canon, it seems like it is. In that, the aliens are bred in specially built 'breeding pits'. Like I said, born warriors.

I mean, aren't the humans in turn becoming more like the aliens, using the crystals to power their own weapons so that the aliens that /do/ use the crystals to power their own weapons wont?

I hope they bring in more alien races- so it turns more interesting, rather than a simple 2-faction fight.

Without reading much back story I just accepted that humans are naturally jerks and are strip mining Mars and butchering those who would stand in their way. Read up on the treatment of natives by colonists if this seems unlikely to you. Anthrax blankets anyone?

Edit: I fixed some grammar.

I hope they don't, it would jst cause a chaotic free for all, like Halo. Humans vs. Covenant vs. Flood vs. Sentinels= Holy crap who do I shoot?!?!

Well, not necessarily a free-for-all, but maybe a fragile alliance between the humans and aliens versus some super aliens (who also want the crysta...hey wait! nvm this might turn into command and conquer 3)

Yeah its pretty good to keep to the 2-faction fight. But perhaps at least some 'elite' human troopers or something. Like send in the REAL human army.

Pretty much what I thought.

An elite gorup of Human troops would be awesome, like ZCereburus' MM Mammoth Tank.

But I want to see some more types of Jellies, other than just the Commander and the normal guys.

I had so many I built an Alien power center... :alien::pir-laugh::pir-laugh:

Way to over-analyze one of LEGO's shallowest themes, everybody.

It's clear the aliens are only present to give the humans someone to fight. There's no clear reason why the aliens need the crystals- presumably they need them for the same reasons humans do, to power their vehicles. The reason doesn't matter. There just needs to be two factions so that the ten year old boys can have fun playing with the sets.

I'd love a REAL alien theme again, like UFO (which was amazing), but LEGO seems content to give us small sub-theme vehicles. =/

Somehow, as I read this thread, I begin to believe that the entire MM line is intended as social commentary on the United States and the former Soviet Union, with the two groups representing the struggle inherent in the arms race. Each side feels that it is right and the other is evil. Each side contains a little of each part, but in the end, only you can decide how it will turn out.

Or, it's just a kids toy and we're trying to turn it into something serious again!

I think they are both there for selfish reasons, but I also think it's more fun to see the "bad" guys as the "good" guys.

Unless they're Pirates.
