Mattieshoe Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 (edited) OK!!!!Lemme jump in here real quick. So you can end this color discussion, colors were changed for a few reasons, one particularly is that these new ones are not suppossed to fade. I have my old grey from '85, and lemme tell you, it is dirty! No, sorry, it is FILTHY!!! So is the yellow and so is the white. It's much better to have FOUR shades of grey to use as oppossed to two? How about three different shades of brown? I love the new browns and greys!!! there's just one thing you haven't counted on, buddy: the new greys and brown won't fade because there's no color to fade. they already have no warmth or depth to them. and four shades of grey would be too much. the new ones are supposed to be the same "Shade" as the old ones, only they're less warm and fun and more dingy and dull. Hinckley Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 7/10 people liked the old Light Grey better, 8/10 people liked the old Dark Grey better, and 7/10 liked the old Brown better. Site your source for that please. I will insist on seeing where you pulled your stats. Quote
Mattieshoe Posted August 16, 2008 Author Posted August 16, 2008 (edited) Site your source for that please. I will insist on seeing where you pulled your stats. Mostly just friends and family. more importantly, the old colors are more WARM on the spectrum. which, as any artist who's also a toy designer will tell you, makes them more inviting and happy. It's like walking into a cozy house with a fire after being in a blizzard. thwe new colors, on the other hand, are on the COLD side of the spectrum. that makes them more industrial and flat and less inviting and happy. with that said, Many LEGO fans hate the new Greys and brown not only because they're different, but because they're cold and no fun, and it's changing many people's buying habits. some (Me included) don't even purchase new LEGO sets because of this change. color has a huge impact. nobody likes to use colors that are depressing and dingy. they want dark rich colors that scream to be played with. check out John Kricfalusi's blog (the the Genius cartoonist behind "Ren and Stimpy") for color theories like this that prove my point. http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/2008/08/som...s-of-woody.html I hope some workers for LEGO read this, and re-realize the importance of Warm, inviting colors. (like the Greys and Brown of pre-2003) maybe you could even try to collaborate with john on the Color Change. he's also a toy designer. Edited August 16, 2008 by Mattieshoe Quote
CP5670 Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 (edited) Who would get Annoyed?I don't think anyone fancies the new grey. It just doesn't look nice. That is not the point. The new grays have been around for quite some time and many people have invested heavily in them by now. I still have almost everything in the old gray, but once I use those pieces up in MOCs I will have to do the same. TLG made a very poor decision years ago, but trying to reverse it now wouldn't help anything. The only way they could make everyone happy is to keep both colors in service at once, and I can't see that happening given how similar they are. The difference is pretty subtle, especially with light gray, and I bet 95% of kids wouldn't notice the difference at all unless you tell them about it. Edited August 16, 2008 by CP5670 Quote

It's subtle, but it's there. and it makes a big impact, believe it or not. these new colors are cold. they aren't inviting to kids (or AFOLs for that matter) they're industrial and dull, and they turn people off. there are theories behind this stuff. the old colors were WARM AND INVITING. they made people want to pick them up and play with them. It's not always about seeing the difference, but about FEELING the difference. Quote

Dovchenko Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Hey guys, sorry to pull Mattie out of this conversation. Hopefully, he'll be back shortly. I just wanted to have a private discussion with him first. Feel free to continue in the meantime. Thanks. Can I be on Hiatus so you can personally talk to me about asking to go on Hiatus? But JESUS CHRIST ! "The bricks are warmer and more colourful, easier to pick up and play with. No offence, but I call the new colours "fresh". The first word I though of when I saw them... was "fresh". And the older colours? "Old". I like the new colours, though honestly that change didn't work out too well with anything "old coloured". Stash2Sixx Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Just to prove a point, as a moderator stated earlier, the color discussion turns into a nasty discussion that goes nowhere........ ..... ...... which is where this thread has gone. My advice is this, rewrite the letter, leave out your color complaints, and focus on a few important ideas. Quote
