Teddy Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 (edited) Dear all, I was bored of working on my HMS Victory MOC here, so I decided to do an attempt at making a modular castle. All towers and wall sections can be separated. The castle is loosely based on the Muiderslot. -----edit nov 2008------ In the mean while the castle has grown into a serious project. I've tried to make an up-to-date compilation of the most recent pictures in this first post. I enjoy posting my progress and incorperating the great feedback I've received thus far! --------------------------- Hopefully you like my design. any comments are welcome. DNL Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 (edited) A very nice and realistic looking castle! I like the covered allure. I used to live close to the Muiderslot and visited it a couple of times. (Here is the Wikipedia page about the Muiderslot) DNL Edited August 17, 2008 by DNL Quote
KimT Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 That's a very impressive castle MOC. I wish I had the time and space to start building something like that. I guess having a 1½ yrs old daughter kinda disrupts that. Could you post a few pics of the interior, if there is a such? Thanks for sharing your work with us. Quote
Fatespuppet Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 This is quite an excellent build. I've been working on my on, much simpler, modular castle design for quite some time and I'd love to see how the interior on this looks. I'd especially like to see the towers since those are what I've struggled with the most. Quite frankly, your's put mine to shame. I't too late for me to rethink the ones I've build for now, but these might work quite well for a different structure. Quote
the_lego_dude Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 I love that, I personally am a very large fan of castle. So when I see an awesome moc like this I just have to comment. I like how you used the latest castle colors for the walls. Quote
Dragonator Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 That's a very nice castle Teddy. I like the way you've done the arrow slits, and the way the towers have been designed works really well. I too would love to see some pictures of the interior and of the roof area. Nice work, keep at it! Quote
WhiteFang Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Teddy, this is an outstanding medival castle. I like the construction very much, especially its high towers and gates. Does it come with an interior as well? I will love to take a closer look at it. Furthermore, the cross on the castle walls added a little bit of touch. Wonderful job. Thanks for sharing. Quote
Teddy Posted August 18, 2008 Author Posted August 18, 2008 Dear all, thank you for all the kind replies. Some of you requisted some enterior pictures. Therefore, I made some just now and put them in my Brickshelf folder here. Hopefully you like them. I will be looking forward to your comments and replies. metalandi Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Wow, that really looks great. very realistic too, i like the roof in between the towers and the bridge lifting mechanism Quote
Sandy Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Wow, that really looks great. very realistic too, i like the roof in between the towers and the bridge lifting mechanism I think the castle is built with talent, and I do think it's impressive, but I believe it suffers a bit from the "Big Grey Wall" syndrome. :/ You can read more about it from Classiccastle.com, if you don't know what I mean. The wall could really use some texture and color to make it more... I don't know if "realistic" is the correct word for it, but something like that. Now it looks a bit too perfect for my taste, heh. ;D But great job anyway, I'd love to be able to build a huge castle like that some day! Quote
robbo Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Nice work.........i would just love to let my catapults loose on that one You have planned this castle nicely......i would love to see more work like this. Quote

I've looked at classic castle. com on the BGW syndrome: "boring to look at". Some of their suggestions are: color variation, texture variation, shape variation, breaking up the wall. To be honoust, I think most of those recomended techniques are present in my current moc as well. The only one I have not used, is the color variation on the surface. I guess this is what you are refering to? Personaly, I realy like the texture of ordanary bricks. Therefore, I have made it entirely brick build on the outside. Except maybe for the two smaller towers, but I am not fully satisfied with them. I do fear, however, that putting in additional colors will make it look cluttered and a bit weird. Also becasue I used dark bley for a different effect. I will be looking forward to your reply. Kind regards, Teddy Edited August 19, 2008 by Teddy Quote
NewRight Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Great work. I always love to see large castles and you pulled it off well. Quote
Teddy Posted August 19, 2008 Author Posted August 19, 2008 Dear all, the remarks of Sandy got me thinking and I tried to add some colored bricks. However, I only used small plates in order not to get the walls too cluttered. Please tell me your opinion. Kind regards, Teddy side view: front view: other side view: Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Wonderfull work so far Teddy! The colored plates definitly add to the realistic feeling, a few more definitly wouldn't hurt it. Are you planning to make scenery around it as well? Quote
Cakeman Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Very nice modular castle. (Inpires me to take some photos of my own, much smaller one) The height of the walls are impressive, and I like the fact that there is room for the minifigs to patrol them. Personally I think that it looks better now that you have some other colors mixed into the walls - it's a good thing you haven't done too much. A castle can look cluttered if there's too much variation, but I think it looks better with then without. Quote
iamded Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Wow, man! This thing's amazing! By itself it's a stunning creation, but the facts that it has an interior and is modular just makes it so much better! A truly great job, Teddy, I look forward to seeing more Castle creations from you. ~Peace Quote

Kind regards, Teddy It does look better in my opinion, but you shouldn't have gone through the trouble of making that edit just based on my opinion. It's still your creation, and I still think it's great! Quote
