Matn Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 (edited) I have started a building-project all in the theme of Harry Potter. I am still making my purist figures, which will be displayed on the castle in different scenes from the books and the movies. So, the goal is to make Hogwarts (the school of Wizardry) (was based on the fifth Harry Potter-game) and now based on mainly my fantasy. I already have ordered lots af tan (well, it isn't that much, as it seems), but I need much and much more! The castle itself is the main goal, but the buildings around it (Hagrid's Hut, the Owlery, the trees etc.) are also on my list of to-do. When I have builded a part, I will update this post. I really hope I can get further with this project, and I will have something to show on the meetings of BeLUG, the Belgian club. -------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: 18th of April 2009: -------------------------------------------------------- I would love it to read commentary and tips! General updates: - I've made first a boathouse which was in a too big scale, there are no more pictures of it. - 21/05/09: processing the second part: done for 50%. Edited May 21, 2009 by Matn Quote
Asuka Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Although I´m not a HP expert your work looks neat and also pretty accurate to me... good luck with your interesting project! Quote
tin7_creations Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 love it! so you're going to make it so that it's completely the same as the game? or a mix of movies/games? Quote
Matn Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 love it! so you're going to make it so that it's completely the same as the game? or a mix of movies/games? It will be almost completely like the game, but offcourse: it can't be that big so I will just use my fantasy in some cases. Thanks for the nice comments so far. Quote
I Scream Clone Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Off to a really good start there Matn! Cant wait to see some more of your locations in the future. Quote
Sandy Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Whoa, you sure have big goals! I own the game and played it through, and even though the game itself sucked, I did love the environments in it - especially the very detailed Hogwarts. Not to sound pessimistic, but I honestly doubt you'll be able to reconstruct the entire castle from the game, but I hope you get the main lines! Maybe you shouldn't try to build it to scale, but more like the official sets, in a doll house style. It may hurt the exterior, but does a service to the interior, playability and taking photos of all the rooms. But this is just my humble opinion. I actually am going to do a HP-themed LEGO photocomic for my boyfriend's HP-fansite for Christmas, but that has meant I have hogged all the possible HP-sets from Ebay I could get - which in turn meant spending a lot of money on them. In the past few weeks, I've bought about ten sets already, and a bidding I've participated in for the first Hogwarts Castle ends in half an hour (wish me luck!). I'm telling this because I think we have a bit of a rivalry between us! But the best of luck to your project! It's always good to see that LEGO Harry Potter still lives on, even though the theme is no longer in production! Quote
Tohst Posted August 22, 2008 Posted August 22, 2008 Looks like a good start. Hogwart's is daunting so I'm impressed when anyone takes it on. Best of luck. -Tohst Who has his own little Hogwart's project going. Quote
badboytje88 Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Hey matn Great to hear something about your project again. The boathouse looks like a great start, I didn't even know hogwarts had a boathouse, I don't believe it was ever mentioned in one of the books. Can't wait for more pics! Quote
Matn Posted August 23, 2008 Author Posted August 23, 2008 Everybody: thanks. Sandy, yes, offcourse, the castle is way to big to build it like it is, I wouldn't be able to afford that. Like: the stairs from the courtyard to the boathouse will be a lot shorter! I won't do any interior for now, maybe in the Great Hall. I'm also looking forward to your comic, which fansite is it? Have you won the bidding? I'm not really searching for the sets, but when they fall in my hands I'll certainly buy them, for now I'm just buying tan and grey. And yes, in the game there is a boat house. When you go down the stairs from the courtyard in front of the great hall, you will end by the boat house. Quote
The Nightwing Reborn Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Just so I can be informed, what game are we talking about? That Lego HP game? Anyway I am glad Harry Potter lives on, in the form of a boathouse. Awesome boathouse by the way, I too was oblivious to there being a boathouse on the Hogwarts grounds. I missed out on all the fleshie Harry Potter sets, so I am saving some money for a couple of the sets off bricklink. I cannot wait for the full hogwarts project to be completed, looking forward to it TNR Quote
Mr.Brick Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I have had this same project about a year ago, and I had ordered tons of tans too, and ended up making only (?) the grat hall. It is very accurate to the movies and if you want, I'll post some images of it asap. I can say; It is a lot of work, and making whole Hogwarts is really impossible without a good sponsor or very much money. (and time!) The hardest part of Hogwarts is the largest tower, somewhat in the center. It size is so big, that making this on minifig scale is as near as impossible. nevertheless, I wish you luck, and if you need any tips PM/email me (Dutch) :-) Quote
Matn Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 It is based on the fifth movie-videogame. And as told earlier: I won't make it on scale (would be impossible), but it will look like the castle in that game and as described in the books. I am now making plans and saving money for the project, so it could be placed on a 'hold'. I'm very interested in those pictures and more information (like your thoughts and experiences), you can mail it to me or add me on MSN Messenger: mattimeurisse[at]hotmail[dot]com. Quote
Sandy Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 I now have enough HP-sets to start building my own Hogwarts (as I mentioned in my previous post). It won't be as big and ambitious as the one you're planning, but it will be very nice to compare my work with what you come up with. I think I'll base my design on the special pieces provided in the official sets. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here, in any case. Quote
Millacol88 Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Its a good start. It looks very accurate to the game. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Quote
NewRight Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Nice start! Can't wait to see the finished result. How large are you predicting this project? Raise my anticipation of the finished product. Quote
randomparrot Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 I really like the boathouse i await your next pictures. Quote
Matn Posted January 4, 2009 Author Posted January 4, 2009 Here we go again! This project has been blown into life again. I have made a new boathouse, but that one was beautiful but way to big. So I broke it down again and build this one, it's almost three time as small as the second one, but better. I have made some WIP pictures, that aren't so WIP, but rather pictures to get your attention. I'll upload a WIP of the whole thing a bit later. This is placed on a 48x48 baseplate. Comments? ^^ Quote
Matn Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 Thanks. Here's an overview: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30479264@N06/3177154006/ Quote
Pencoin Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Looks good, will you do a chamber of secrets? Quote
Matn Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 Thanks. I would love to do one, but the problem is it would be situated in the rocks, beneath the castle itself. So it wouldn't be so practical to make that. Maybe, when the castle is done, I'll make an apart Chamber of Secrets to put it next to it, and other scenes not situated "in the castle". Quote

pjibid Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Very good i cant wait to see the next update! Quote
Matn Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 Thanks. Well, in the beginning I took the game as example, but now I am more using my own fantasy and thoughts. The next update will be there when I have ordered pieces again. Quote
Matn Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 The future is bright for this massive project. I have finished the first part! Now, I am really happy with it, but I would love to read your comments and thoughts. Quote
