JimBee Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Hello everyone, I started this topic to ask if anyone knows what happened to the square studs and 1x1 bricks. While the round studs and 1x1s are nice and save money for TLG, the square ones are nice for making a nice, flat surface. Same thing with the brown/ frown pieces that are wavy instead of flat, look at the SpongeBob hospital for an example. I am seeing less and less of these square items, and frankly, I want them back. So, what are your opinions on this matter? Is it a good thing or a bad thing that TLG hardly makes any of these anymore? I'll add a poll if necessary. Quote
Mr. Lego-builder Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Hmm...Interesting question... Personally, I do not mind when it comes to 1x1 plates vs. 1x1 round plates. 1x1 Square plates are still used in various themes. As for pieces with strange shapes you also mentioned, I think TLG might be trying to go for a more organic/natural look while having the illusion of adding more depth to the model while using less pieces. I also wish TLG would use 'regular' pieces as well, but for kids, I guess building with these pieces is less exciting than building with pieces with more of a unique look and feel. Just my opinion Quote
DJ Force Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I´m afraid I don´t get it. I NEVER noticed square studs in my whole life. They´ve always been round. What exactly are you talking about, then? Maybe a pic can help. Quote
Front Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I think we are talking about 1x1 bricks and 1x1 plates. I just built the 2008 agents set 8630, a medium sized set. It includes: 4 orange 1x1 bricks 4 light grey 1x1 bricks 2 translucent red 1x1 plates 6 dark grey 1x1 plates So surely they are still used in new sets. The round ones might be less expensive. JimBee Posted August 29, 2008 Author Posted August 29, 2008 I'm talking about these: The square 1x1 brick compared to the round 1x1 brick, and the square stud compared to the round stud . Quote
Freddie Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Oh, I think you've messed up a little. What you refer to as studs are standardly called plates, while studs are the mechanism of which allows you to connect the top of a brick/plate to the bottom of another brick/plate. Quote

Nah, I just call the 1x1 plates studs. Specifically the round ones. Quote
Kingboy Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 Nah, I just call the 1x1 plates studs. Specifically the round ones. I believe the point that Freddie is trying to make is that very few other people refer to 1x1 plates, whether round or square, as "studs". Most people here and elsewhere on the web refer to the little knob on top of the bricks as the stud, talking about the connection point that grabs onto the inner walls and tubes of other bricks. What you call "studs", most people refer to as 1x1 plates, in both round and square varieties. Henceforth, when you use personal jargon that doesn't mesh well with other's expectations, there will be confusion. Back to the topic at hand...to be honest, I really don't see this as a problem in my own collection. I have roughly as many 1x1 sqare bricks as I do 1x1 round bricks. Heck, not too long ago there were two sets that were basically nothing but 1x1 square bricks (the two mosaic sets). As far as round vs. square plates go, I don't mind that I have more round than sqaure. I find the round ones more useful for decorative bits, and rarely have I found myself lacking a 1x1 square when I really needed it (which isn't terribly often). Quote

Makes sense now! However, I wasn't aware of any withdrawl or shortage. Always seems plenty on Bricklink when I've looked for them and haven't noticed any missing from any sets I've recently bought. Cheers Rog Quote
Athos Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I've noticed that too. I have a ton of 1x1 round plates (and bricks) and don't have much use for them. At least not in the quantities that I have them in. At the same time, I never seem to have enough 1x1 regular plates and bricks. Steve Quote
CP5670 Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 For the most part I have plenty of both kinds, but there does seem to a shorter number of white 1x1 plates on BL, at least among stores I've looked at recently. They are common, but not as common as you would expect given how generic the piece is. And yeah, the "square studs" had me scratching my head too. Quote
JimBee Posted August 29, 2008 Author Posted August 29, 2008 The reason I call them studs is because of the LEGO video games. Quote
Manta Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I have a bit of a shortage, but I didn't notice a shortage in lego's sets, just my stock. Quote
Adam Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 I have a shortage of 1x1 plates/studs/whatever, but plenty of 1x1 bricks. Darn! Ras, you foiled my "be the latest to reply to some topic so that my username appears all across the forum" plan! My narcissist-iness has been stopped! Quote
VBBN Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 If you are looking for 1x1 bricks, then you would need to get a creator box of bricks. I recieved 30 or so of them in my 1000 piece box. Quote
Hinckley Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 I'm talking about these:The square 1x1 brick compared to the round 1x1 brick, and the square stud compared to the round stud . A good rule of thumb when starting a conversation about certain pieces is to link in pictures from Bricklink. That saves time in explaining and picture taking... Quote
rriggs Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 (edited) Just double-checked and most colours are available for 1x1 bricks and 1x1 plates, round and square direct through the Lego website. Not cheap but they are all there. Cheers Rog Edited September 2, 2008 by rriggs Quote

My narcissist-iness has been stopped! Adam, let's not see that plan put into action often, please. Post because you have something to reply to, not just to see your name. Besides, there's only room for one narcissist and that's me. I have a feeling you were just joking, but I thought I'd chime in just in case. We don't want newer users thinking it's an okay thing to do. Thanks Quote

Hinckley Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Thanks, I'll keep that in mind, althought I didn't find any on BS or Perron. Then you don't know how to use either... Take a look at the Bricklink Parts catalog...I'd give you more specifics, but I find you learn more if you seek the answers on your own. I don't want to contribute to modern laziness Quote

Front Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I have bought some Mosaic sets this last week (both 2007 sets). 6163 and the smaller: 6162 The first come with two tranparent 16x16, the second with a single of these base plates. Add to that a lot of 1x1 bricks, 11 different colours in the first, 9 in the second. Front Quote
