SlyOwl Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 Aw, Phred, I was just about to index this when I had to go, and when I came back, you'd done it Anyway, thankyou all for the comments What's the creature on the rock meant to be though? It's supposed to be a baboon, but anything monkey-like is fine. A dog? Maybe - it's open to interpretation Thank you for constantly challenging the way I think of LEGO. I wouldn't be as good of a builder as I am if it weren't for the creative minds of builders like you, Sir Nadroj and oo7. I'm okay with being in my thirties and being schooled by a bunch of younger guys, just please please keep teaching. Aw. The way you made the slope like that is fantastic. How do you make the rock stand up straight against the sidways bricks? Do you have that many SNOT bricks? Some of the tiles and plates are connected by "half-stud" - they're not fully connected to the structure underneath, so you can get a shallow angle. The rest are attached by a variety of hinges. SNOT bricks? If you mean tiles, then yes, I do have them - I use up alla me grey! The water and beach are just made of normal bricks on their sides You know, I just saw this on BS, and I come here to see it frontpaged! Congrats on what could easily be your single best MOC (at least I think so!) Really? I guess it depends on the angle you come from; Dung Mall, Pooh Sticks and some others were very popular, but my more technical MOCs (like this one) are probably better overall. Then again, if it boils down to favorites, then this one, the Steampunk Pirate Ship and Pooh Sticks win; I've got a mixture in there I'm surprised you've never heard of him. He's quite good. If you ever get in touch with the man, tell him I want more pics, or a link to his brickshelf. Boy More pics? Sorry, 3 was the maximum for this contest, so I couldn't be bothered with more My Brickshelf. My Flickr. There are many nice little touches which makes this moc so incredible, such as the shack (using minifig hands to represent hay) It's actually meant to be a plaited mat (of sorts); I didn't have enough (any) green/tan hands to give it touches of not-dry-yet-ness. In fact, nearly all the hands are connected in strips. I had intended to use this on the roof (as dried palm fronds), but it was too weak, and kept collapsing between the parallel bars. I'm just not sure about the horns and tusks for foam/waves breaking. There's quite a lot of this around; personally I like them, as it fits in with - what I see to be - the generally pastel ethos of the whole thing; the colours are as a child would draw them, overall; blue for water, grey for rock, green for trees, brown for earth and yellow for sand. The whites work well with this for me, but it doesn't seem to work on everyone, so I'll investigate other methods. It also covered up the jagged edges of the white SNOT onto the sand, which were annoying me Great work as alwas Sl! Onl thing i'd change is that big flat green bushie piece on the beach, perhaps use a small one or a dark green one to make it a little more realistic. Love the wooden shed and the coconuts, ver ingenious work there! The one bit I did without changing at least once! I haven't got any dark green (I ordered 10 off BL, but when they came they were medium green ), and I used up all my small ones on the nearest tree (yes, just 3 )... Contest? What contest? Castaways Contest on Forbidden Cove. I was actually worried I would be disqualified because there was quite some debate over the ruling that SNOT bases aren't allowed, but they are when they've got a baseplate underneath (hence why there's one here). Luckily Aaron's said it's fine, so I can dismantle it now Stupid Question but what does SNOT mean? i see it a lot but i can't figure it out. thanks. Studs Not On Top - building sideways (like the water) Quote
Runninglizard55 Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Studs Not On Top - building sideways (like the water) ohhhh now it all makes sense. that just makes the MoC that much more impressive!! Quote
Errorist Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Very nice MOC Slyowl. The seaugull is ingenious indeed as are all those other details. Gotta love those crabs . Impressive piece of work. Keep it up Errorist Quote
JimBee Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Wow, outstanding work, SlyOwl! Poor stranded islander's dinner has scuttled away! Nice way of making the crabs, by the way. The monster is cool too, and very nice SNOT techniques. Great MOC!! Quote
oDDerFisken Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 As all you works it's FANTASTIC!!! My only argue is that I'd like some more pictures of this incredible MOC.. even though you were only allowed 3 pics for the contest you could give us some more Quote
Guss Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 amazing *_* I love it! it's wonderful, the crabs are superb ! Quote
Admiral Bejaune Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Wow just amazing. Your techniques and building style is on a whole 'nother level. Great work. Quote

legodude116 Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Wow. A lot of SNOT, a lot of detail. I like it a lot, the crabs and birds are ingenious! What's the creature on the rock meant to be though? <img src='http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/default_skel1.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':skull:' /> A....monkey maybe? Dick-Trom Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Now this kind of MOC's made me cross the line and join the forum A pirate's life for me! Quote
Cherno Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Cool SNOT technique, good amount of detail in that scene. Since most things have already beeen commented on, I will focus on a few that attracted my attention the most. The little ship in the distance (?) gives a cool illusion of depth. This is the first time I have seen this concept in a MOC, so props to that, as they say :D (If it really is supposed to be a tiny ship floating there for whatever reason, please disregard that!) The crabs are really nice as well, although I think they work better when looking from a distance, where their red carapaces can't be seen as the construction helmets they really are. What is that thing floating on the water, bound to the tree with a string? Quote

I agree about the crabs - in retrospect (and having looked up what a crab actually looks like), they're not all they could've been! The floating thing is a bubble! It's meant to be some sort of improvised fishing device. Quote
