DarthPineapple Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Although not realistic, it's really impressive. Awesome work, I can't wait until it's finished! Quote
Eilif Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Great Job, Finally a good use for Yellow! I would like to put in my vote for the classic version of the wall. Yellow Castle just seems like a subject best addressed with classic designs. I can't wait to see it done. There is something remarkable nostalgic and calming about a bright yellow castle with lots of smiling minifigs on top. It's just so... happy! Quote
KimT Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 Yellow Castle just seems like a subject best addressed with classic designs. I can't wait to see it done. I see your point. I guess I'll go for that, especially when I lack the vast amount of 1x? plates needed to do the other versions. There is something remarkable nostalgic and calming about a bright yellow castle with lots of smiling minifigs on top. It's just so... happy! Castle, as we all remember it. Happy and merry with no apparent enemies. Hopefully I'll have something to post tomorrow. I am working on a tower/corner module right now. Quote
iamded Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 It looks fantastic! This is going to be one awesome Castle, keep at it and good luck! My favourite part so far are those big doors, those cheese slopes look great there. ~Peace Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 It's a shame you decided to shelve the castle, Kim; you had something great going on. Quote
KimT Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 Today I've been working on the top of the basic module and the corner/tower. This is how far I've come: A: I've skipped the tiled top for now and worked my way around using plates above the inverted slopes. B: I've tried to add a little "more" to the tower, when I stopped yesterday, it felt a little barren. C: As you can see in the pic with the minifig on the other side of the wall, I've managed to make the walls look solid. Now I must take the basic wall module apart (again) to do the same. D: I'm considering adding some black to the tower. Yellow in yellow does not do the tower well IMHO. Comments and thoughts are welcome since this is only my second large MOC ever. It's a shame you decided to shelve the castle, Kim; you had something great going on. Don't worry, I'm sure the MOD version will be back Quote
AgentRick Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 A black roof would look MUCH better personally. Maybe red gray, or blue. Quote
KimT Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 A black roof would look MUCH better personally. Maybe red gray, or blue. The roof was merely made to give me an idea of how I'll finally do it. The final one will be a lot smaller and dressed in black. Quote
I Scream Clone Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I really like the Tower Kim, though i think the entrance needs to be at least one brick higher to allow the figs in, preferably two to make the entrance more impressive. Keep on building! Quote
KimT Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 I considered making them a little higher, but then I recalled visiting castles around Europe and, as far as I can remember, it was a pest moving in and out of doorways because of their low height. But thanks for the comments and I'll take it into consideration when I start up working on the modules this weekend. Quote
Lego12 Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 That is beautiful....I think I'm crying KimT...your the second person to make me cry in my whole life.... That is an AMAZING castle! I love the old-fashioned look! It's marvelous! I think that you are going in a good direction! I give this a 5/5! The castle looks nice and I love it! Keep it going! I can;t wait until its finished! Teddy Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Dear KimT, the corner tower is progressing nicely! It maintains the yellow castle feel. I considered making them a little higher, but then I recalled visiting castles around Europe and, as far as I can remember, it was a pest moving in and out of doorways because of their low height. But thanks for the comments and I'll take it into consideration when I start up working on the modules this weekend. Any updates yet? Kind regards, Teddy Quote
Dragonator Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Hey KimT, Nice work so far! I love the original castle you did, and I hope you return to it eventually, because it was looking great. Back to what you're working on now, I have one main suggestion and that is the colour of the flooring. If your aiming for a "Classic Castle" look, then I would suggest you try doing the floors on the upper levels and the ramparts light grey. This was the colour of the original floors, and it also adds some highlights to the build, since just solid yellow is a bit overwhelming. Anyway, that's just what I would do, if it doesn't look good to you, then don't do it, but I think you should give it a try, you just might like it. I think that without the grey it just seems a little too... yellow. Also, you might remember that the original castle had red windows on the back tower. Perhaps you might want to play around with adding some details like that to your corner towers? Those are my thoughts, do with them what you will. Keep up your work, and I look forward to the next progress report. Quote
Zorro Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 Hi there KimT, I came here by some random forum browsing, and I'm glad I did ! Your (modified) yellow castle looks quite awesome ! I didn't really like the original yellow castle because it had few details and few "play rooms", but yours is so cool ! I did like the fact they came with so many minifigs. I inherited a yellow castle from my father BTW. I love the corner tower you have created, the thick walls are imposant as well. A big from me. Quote

When I started this new module build, I initially had the plates go all the way across the top of the wall. Now they are only 4 studs wide again and replacing them with light grey plates has been considered. Reading what you written has made my mind up. Light grey it is Quote
KimT Posted October 6, 2008 Author Posted October 6, 2008 I've just finished renewing the wall and corner designs, plus I've done the first version of a stable: The Stables The Stable holds up to 4 horses and has a small roofed building on top for the guards to relax, when not patrolling. The Corner ver2 A black roof has ben added (still need a few pieces), the floor has been light-greyed and some minor improvements in design and structure has been done. The Wall ver2 The wall is now "solid", the floor has been light-greyed and a few constructional errors have been corrected. Comments and ideas are more than welcome. Quote
Teddy Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 Dear KimT, Just an idea ofcourse. You could consider taking of the Merlon on the inside part of the castle. Since, in most castles the back is not covert with merlons. Because, in case the wall is conquered, the lack of merlons leaves the attackers exposed to the defenders on the towers. Kind regards, Teddy Quote
KimT Posted October 7, 2008 Author Posted October 7, 2008 Yes that might be an idea. I just thought that it might be useful to be able to fight inwards if the Gate was rammed. Thanks for the idea and I'll give it some serious consideration Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 As a big fan of the old Yellow Castle KimT, I'm really impressed with your modular yellow castle creations. Over the years, the Yellow Castle has inspired me to create a few MOCs as well, none of which compare to what your building. Nice job. Yellow Castle On! Quote

Dragonator Posted October 7, 2008 Posted October 7, 2008 KimT, this is looking great! The grey flooring really does something for this, and the corner towers look much better with the flatter black roof. It looked a bit weird with such a sloping yellow one. The use of inverted slope pieces along the walls is good too. Is it just me, or do the doorways in the corner towers seem a bit low? Teddy has a good point about the merlons, or whatever those wall pieces are called. That said, it does look quite nice with the walls on both sides. But then, it wouldn't be very useful during an invasion. Other than that, I think the walls are looking fine, no more improvements that I can think of. The stables look really nice too, although I wonder whether they should be a little taller on the ground floor? That horse looks like it's going to get a sore neck bending down like that all the time. I think it would look nice with some sort of arch over the stable door, but then, that would probably effect the floor height inside, wouldn't it? Perhaps you could try building up the floor a couple of plates like in the corner towers? These are just suggestions, I don't know whether they would look better or not, but you might want to try it out and see what it looks like. One last thing, shouldn't you have brick-built horses, to be correct to the classic style? Just kidding. Keep it up, it's looking great! Oh wait, this is the last question, really it is. Are you going to build some sort of citadel or castle in the middle? I'm curious to know how far your planning on taking this... Quote
KimT Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 I'm taking it as far as I can. Depending on my brick collection. Quote
KimT Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 The last straight wall module has been constructed. This is only the first version and I'm sure I'll make a lot of changes. I've had a go at making a round tower in the middle of the wall section, but since I ran out of 1x1 round yellow bricks, I had to cut it in half - The final version will hopefully go all the way round and have an arched walkthrough in the middle. Here's the section so far: Version 1 Comments and questions are more than welcome. And yes, it was close to purgatory integrating the round part into the regular wall. There's a plate difference in height...so damn annoying when the section has to be equal height as the other sections. Quote
Teddy Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 (edited) Dear KimT, I'm looking forward to your (half) round tower. Have you considered tiling over the round bricks? Half round towers are very common when towers are placed in the middle of a straight wall. As you can see on this photo of Carcasonne in France: The round structure is mainly there to give the tower more resistance to tunneling, as a straight corner is a weak spot, and it is safe to assume the enemy is not tunneling on the inside of the wall. Thanks for the update. Kind regards, Teddy Edited October 8, 2008 by Teddy Quote
