hollisbrick Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I have never taken notice of the Fabuland theme but I decided to look it up on Brickset and I was quited surprised...about how retarded it is!!! I can't believe that some people actually like that theme. It is so crap and wierd! What is the deal with it? Does any one else not like it?
furious Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I am guessing you are very young. like <18. Different strokes for different folks.
Faramir Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I've often wondered the same thing. I guess it's the retro thing... or something. However, fearing Hinckley's axe and death-by-bucket, I never asked. I'm interested to find out how this poll turns out, though.
Norrington Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I have never taken notice of the Fabuland theme but I decided to look it up on Brickset and I was quited surprised...about how retarded it is!!! I can't believe that some people actually like that theme. It is so crap and wierd! What is the deal with it?Does any one else not like it? I think it was retarded, in the good way. Most sets are mainly just figs, and two accessories. The good thing about it is, that means that figs and accessories are easier to get ahold of for people like me with only one Fabuland figure but want more.
Deinonychus Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 S'funny...I had to explain Fabuland to my Wife tonight. She was in my den and noticed Ricky Raccoon on his Scooter sitting on my shelf and had no idea what his deal was. Part of my explanation went like this. "A bunch of people on Eurobricks are all crazy for it. You know, some of the same people who hate Bionicle and think it's stupid crap...go figure." Just goes to show how LEGO has little niches for everyone
Johnny 5 Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I'm not taking a side here, reason 1: I don't have any Fabuland so I cannot make an informed judgement, 2: This thread has potential for some serious flame wars. But I am going to keep an eye on this to see if it gets controversial in here, and if it doesn't I might have to insert a controversial comment.
Admiral Blockbeard Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) I personally like it for humor, I am fairly open minded when it comes to sets, personally I do not like Bionical, but can respect some creations that the fans make with the pieces. Same goes with Fabuland. I actually thought it was duplo... just don't tell any one. Other than that, Fabuland deserves the same amount of respect as say pirates ot castle. Just because of our personal taste, we should not slam it for being "enter comment here". I feel we are treading a thin line here. Be careful what you say, those that love it might get offended. That is not something we want on this web site as for it being retarded, nothing is genius with out a mix of crazy. What other theme can you buy a set with a dog and fire hydrant, all they needed to do was add a bit of dog wee and it would have been a top seller! Regards, Cpt. PB Edited September 20, 2008 by Cpt. Zepher Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I think the idea is that it's a joke. Fabuland builders mainly hide dark things in Fabuland MOCs, and I think that's the idea. It's like a hunt for the evil things in cute animal world, but I'm no expert, I'm interested to see what Hinck will say.
Eilif Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I say thank heavens for fabuland, how else would we have gotten the minifig pipe wrench and the street lamp or "fabuland standard" as LEGO calls it. There's lots of other reasons to love fabuland, but if that was all those creepy animals gave us, we would still be indebted to them.
ProducePrincess Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 well i love the one fabuland character i have and it is really retro looking so i dont know why people hate fabuland because you can always put a gun in there hand and make them more evil. basically if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything at all
JimBee Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) Hmm, I've never really owned or seen a Fabuland piece (let alone fig or set), but I personally wouldn't buy it. In fact, Eurobricks first gave me wind of this oldie theme. At first, I thought it was a theme created by Hinckley with some pretty cool molds, but no, it was official Lego. I wonder why Lego decided to do this? Whenever a new idea (in anything, mind you, not just Lego) is created, I always think about why the makers came upon this idea and produced/ shared it. I wasn't around in the 80s (or whenever it was released. If it was released in the early 90s, I was too young), but maybe they thought it was classy or something? To me, Fabuland is a theme where you can get a lot of figs/ accessories for low prices. I also enjoy viewing the FBG MOCs with the little violent secrets hidden in them. I'm interested to see what Hinck will say. Me too, hopefully with some insight. So I vote "I don't like them", but like Deinonchyus said, Lego has something for everybody. EDIT: I voted "I don't really know..." because I am neutral on it being "crap". Edited September 20, 2008 by JimButcher
Siegfried Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 I like it, but believe it or not, it isn't a favourite theme of mine. I wish it would come back to fill the duplo-LEGO gap, but TLG doesn't seem to like that idea... even though they do feel that there is a market for similar stuff. (Hence Jack Stone.) There isn't much LEGO that I don't love acually... "A bunch of people on Eurobricks are all crazy for it. You know, some of the same people who hate Bionicle and think it's stupid crap...go figure." Well I hope you don't think I'm like that; I wouldn't say I love Bionicle, but I certainly don't hate it. Afterall, this guy was my first post Dark Age set... ...and he's still together! I wonder why Lego decided to do this? It is a transition theme. LEGO decided to do Fabuland instead of adding better Duplo figures. Eventually they changed their mind and made Duplo for older kids, but that didn't stop them trying again with Jack Stone....
hollisbrick Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 This thread has potential for some serious flame wars. And I started it! Anyway, so your saying that this theme is for little kids? I remember when I first saw these figs when I was really little, I got nightmares I guess I couldnt get the whole Human body, monkey head thing around my head S'funny...I had to explain Fabuland to my Wife tonight haha
Siegfried Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Anyway, so your saying that this theme is for little kids? I remember when I first saw these figs when I was really little, I got nightmares I guess I couldnt get the whole Human body, monkey head thing around my head I'm not a big fan of most animal-headed cartoons so I understand how you feel. I especially find it freaky when a human-like-animal has a pet, like a cat or bird. Miffy is like that; why should a rabbit have a pet dog? Wouldn't the dog be smarter than the rabbit? Why doesn't the dog eat the rabbit? Freeeeeaaaaky!
JimBee Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Why doesn't the dog eat the rabbit? Freeeeeaaaaky! You're going to give me nightmares!
Stauder Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Personally, the only reason why I hate it is because somone uses our studio as a volleyball court on sundays, and he attracts alot of attention... *Continues installing gattling gun* I have nothing against Fabuland. It's a nice theme. Just don't think about it too hard. It's like a toaster, first you think it is magical, because you put bread in, toast comes out, but where does the bread go? Then you find out the truth, and now the toaster is just a metal can with two holes in it, numerous electric coils, a spring, a timer and some thinga-mag-iggies. Stauder.
Sandy Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 To me, Fabuland represents the days of my early childhood. I had loads of the animal-headed figures, and I remember preferring them over the normal minifigs at one time. Also, the Fabuland wall/window-pieces offered a way to construct big houses superquickly, which served very well for the "dollhouse" type of play that I preferred at the time. With the System-pieces, the emphasis is pretty much on the building stage in my opinion. So I see a lot of good things in Fabuland, and all things considered, it's quite a unique case among all the LEGO themes.

You're smarter than I give you credit for.
Shadows Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 The real value of Fabuland comes in many forms. The innocence, the simplicity, the vast array of new parts that might not exist had it never been created. I saw a site once that detailed all of those parts and it was amazing. If anyone finds it again, please post it here and I'll add it to the FBG Index. See, it wasn't an offshoot of Duplo, oh no, it was a System line, and therefore compatible with all your current favourites. Yes, the characters are animals with big heads making it a slightly surrealistic world, but where else could something like this happen?
Siegfried Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 If anyone finds it again, please post it here and I'll add it to the FBG Index. Do you mean this site? Have you included my poll?
hollisbrick Posted September 20, 2008 Author Posted September 20, 2008 You're smarter than I give you credit for. I think he's smarter than anyone gives him credit for...What the heck am I saying! What he said was a fluke
brickzone Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Fabuland was great for younger kids, boys and girls, and also had enough interesting parts that it would continue to be useful when one was older and still building. Belville for example is much more limited in scope - being just girly girl stuff. Also it's so much more different in scale (Fabuland was slightly larger than ordinary minifig, but its accessories etc. are even now used for ordinary minifigs all the same). My sister for one would *never* have bought Belville.
Stauder Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) Lay off Fabuland. It never hurt anyone. Fabuland 1. Hinckley 0. Stauder 1. Edit - Hope you don't mind the direct link from brickzone. Edited September 20, 2008 by Stauder
CopMike Posted September 20, 2008 Posted September 20, 2008 Badmouthing Fabuland are you? - take a closer look into my utensil to the right, Punk! Seriously though, I chip in my 5 cents before "Someone" locks this tread ! Before Hinckley showed up & off, I hadn´t the faintest that Fabuland excisted. I even throw away parts that I thought was some clone brand that I now know was Fabuland ! Like this piece of crap marvel: Then I started to read some stuff over at BrickZone and found the characters kind of funny. A couple of them then invaded my apartment through the mailbox without being sent for! One became my avatar because of his profession and there you go - addicted ! When the Fabularia once gets hold of you that´s it - you´re infected for life. I think the idea is that it's a joke. Fabuland builders mainly hide dark things in Fabuland MOCs, and I think that's the idea. It's like a hunt for the evil things in cute animal world, but I'm no expert, I'm interested to see what Hinck will say. well i love the one fabuland character i have and it is really retro looking so i dont know why people hate fabuland because you can always put a gun in there hand and make them more evil. basically if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything at all Zepher & Black Rabbit - you nailed it!! That´s the best part of Fabuland in my opinion. Cute looking violent maniacs, it´s a winner!I say thank heavens for fabuland, how else would we have gotten the minifig pipe wrench and the street lamp or "fabuland standard" as LEGO calls it. There's lots of other reasons to love fabuland, but if that was all those creepy animals gave us, we would still be indebted to them. I think it was retarded, in the good way. Most sets are mainly just figs, and two accessories. The good thing about it is, that means that figs and accessories are easier to get ahold of for people like me with only one Fabuland figure but want more. That´s the second thing - the cool utensils. They really fill a gap & add to the possibilitys on MOC´ing - which some members are great at. Just check the buildings and scenes made with the mix of old school LEGO and Fabuland stuff !As for "hating Bionicle" .... well I don´t hate it but it´s not my cup of RB. But there are some cool pieces that I´ll use any day. So to sum things up I think all themes and stuff contributes to the LEGO world, you don´t have to love or hate everything (except Galidor of course !) CopMike - proud member of FBG
