I've downloaded the program, but reading all those negative posts, I think I will just trash it and continue my Bricklink orders ;) (easier, quicker and probably a lot cheaper)

The program itself isn't that bad. Could be better, but it's ok. At first I couldn't figure out how to use it but once I got the knack it's quite ok.

As for ordering on bricklink: definitely the better choice at the moment. If you like draw a model with LDD, have a part-list printed and order exactly that stuff on bricklink or the parts you're missing.

@phes: early or not, the system of selling pre-packed bags won't change. Maybe LDD will change to showing the bags and not the sets but the factory system won't change to selling single pieces. That would be an official bricklink - which TLG can't afford (at least not before 2090)...

I was referring to the time it takes to approve the design and the number of pieces available...

But nevermind! Explain to me why LEGO cannot afford to sell single pieces until 2090?

In Gylman's example on LUGnet: 118 parts that were required and 632 that were superfluous - that's 5.43 times more pieces than required which is ridiculous!

LEGO has come up with a great concept, but at present it sux MegaBloks majorly...

It's a synonym for TLG's "versions" of "soon" or "in the near future" or "in progress" or "under development" or "being considered"...

And therefore you could be absolutely wrong! We can only hope!

People won't want to be continually forced to buy more pieces than required for their designs. If LEGO doesn't rectify that, eventually people aren't going to keep using their Factory - if it takes off at all! It doesn't sound very promising. Unless of course there's an over abundance of people with high disposable incomes, who can afford to buy 5 times the number of pieces they need every time they design (or purchase) a set from LEGO Factory.

i also think using a computer to design your own models is a bit against the spirit of lego. i mean, lego is all about building models and being challenged by problems like a lack of enough parts/colors, structural trouble, whatever... in the process. it's all about being creative and finding solutions. this software package basically gives you whatever you want (or that's the idea, in the end). i'd like to have my models in a physical capacity, so i can "feel" whether it's a solid design... (i guess you know what mean...)

sure, it's nice to see your own model as an official model in a lego box and all (i'd like to have a lunchbox that way, one day), but i don't really find it to be practical, apart from the fact that many people already spend too much time looking at a computer screen...

It's finally approved!

Tons of new models showed up since yesterday. No wonder it took them forever to approve. Seems like everybody's trying it just to see their model(s) online and share. We'll see how good it sells...

Mine's made of 393 pieces but I'd have to buy 1084 - hence the price ain't very attractive :'(

Edit: WHOA! I just added it to my shopping cart (to see how it feels to buy your own design) and it showed the price as a discounted price - 54.25 instead of 67.85! Not very attractive if this really is a discount (cos it just started or something)...

What is your model, Hobbes? I'd like to see it. :)

It's just a house...

A very nice house as a matter of fact! It has more of a minifigure scale to it. Does it have an interior?

EDIT: I just noticed that the houses category is very popular. 61 creations to be exact. :o

Thank you :$

It's downloadable. If you have LDD installed you can see the details.

I just built stairs up to the upper floor as interior. I didn't go more into details. I used 2x4 and 2x2 bricks between the levels. And with the walls being 1-wide bricks that leaves you with a row of studs so you can use plates to seperate the floors and the attic. There are no stairs to the attic, access should be accomplished with a ladder - which is not in the assortments, though.

And yes, I try to build minifig-scale only. That's why I had to use 2 assortments to get all the pieces. I'm not into that micro-scale-stuff. I grew up with minifigs, I build minifigs. Although I acknowledge the micro-scale models, make no mistake here.

u-hu... It's the easiest assortment to build with if you're an inexperienced LDD-user (as I am)...

Does the creator get to know how many people have viewed their creation and how many people have purchased it?

Good question. There's a "vote" button but it doesn't really explain anywhere how the system works...

As for the parts: I found this thread at LEGOFan.org...

Do you suppose anyone will buy any of these designs?  Or would anyone here buy any of the designs available so far?

With the way the system works at the moment: I don't think so. Right now I wouldn't even buy my own model. I can get the "real" 4886 my model's based on a lot cheaper and I have 667 pieces plus a few from my own collection I can work with.

Available pieces have to increase very much for the system to be interesting - it's just designer sets so far. But you can get those a lot cheaper, download the model into your LDD and mix it with your own pieces (which most of the factory users have) and build the model or a similar one on your own. I don't think having a box with a picture of your model on it is that big an incentive to pay the current prices.

I agree with the guy who posted at LEGOFan.org: I'd like to see what's in the bags and maybe re-design my model and make use of as many pieces as possible while designing it. Then maybe I'd consider actually buying from the factory...
