Technic manual lift ideas. HELP!

For the life of me I cannot remember to how make a simple manual vertical lift. Nothing fancy. Needs to go up and down. Kind of like an elevator, with a manual crank. Can someone point me in the right direction to get starters?

Would a Scissor lift like this do?

If not, the Death Star has two; one geared the other using string.

The scissor type may do, but I'm limited on space. The gear type is what I need.

...sorry my mistake. Both of the Death Star lifts use string. But I found the design I meant anyway.

That works well if you need to control the height off the rack itself but it will need an extra framework to hold the raised thing in place. The gear racks are the standard way to do this otherwise.

If you have some old space or town sets from the late 80s, there was also a pre-built rack assembly consisting of this and this, which may be good if you need to fit the gearing into a small space.

Thanks everyone, the gear rack is what I need, found some on Bricklink. I had some with my original Technic farm tractor, but have few if any from that set left. Wish I'd realized then how handy they would be 25 years later!!
