The wall looks good, but I really don't get this frenzy of putting SNOT everywhere! The bricks have smooth sides in themselves, so replacing them with SNOT-plates seems awfully redundant and making things harder than they should.

Oh, and I don't think all the buildings in the whole town should have black roofs, because it would make the town look downright boring. They did have colors in the middle ages too, you know.

Yes, I'm back!

depends of the region, but you're right^^

I also agree that if you makes your wall ( that looks great  ) with all these 2x2 tiles, it'll have a strange look next to non-snot walls ( I can't make a wall with so many 2x2 tiles! I don't have so many grey tiles! unless you want a very coloured wall^^ ) , so I think it'll be better to just make an usual wall, with non snot size, you can include some snot in it of course! but I think you understood what I meant^^

Dear all,

on a different note. Close to the castles there usually were small villages who could trade with the soldiers and have relative protection

due to the proximity of the castle.

Currently, I've been thinking of making a small village on a 48x48 base plate. But something simular could be interesting for

the community build as well.

Don't know if there is any enthousiasm for this or if this might solve some of the problems of the large numbers of buildings inside the castle.

Something completely different would be a woodcutters hut somewhere in the forrest surrounding the castle.

Hmm, that would have no relation with the castle.. Maybe the woodcutters hut is not such a nice addition then.

But a small village could be.

Just my two cents.

Kind regards,

Teddy

Since some people are confused by the SNOT used by Lasse D, I've rendered an example of what the wall should look like (or at least, the way I interpret the requirements). Note that the back of the wall doesn't have to be hollow. You can make it be 3 solid studs or whatever, the only thing that really matters is the outside appearance. Hopefully this clears up any remaining confusion.

If you're using Ldraw for designing your section before you actually build it, PM me and I'll send you the Ldraw file.

That's exactly what I had in mind! It might look strange if one section uses SNOT like that and not the rest (even though it does look awesome), but as far as the placement of the supports and everything, it's perfect.

Great. That was my main concern.

That looks really good LasseD!

I'll probably start building the bakery tomorrow.

Sounds fine, but I would wait a little with the building until we know how to build the roofs and have agreed on the other standards as well. (Or someone will chose for us  )

I didn't do it for the smooth sides, but for the gaps between them. The use of tiles has 4 advantages in my point of view:

- The shapes of tiles (1x1,1x2,2x2) look more like the stones or boulders used in medieval castle walls. They were rarely long and narrow like 1x6 bricks or longer.

- The gaps between tiles are larger than between bricks and plates, highlighting the details.

- You don't have to interlock the tiles like you do for bricks, again making it more realistic. Here are some pictures for reference (walls are decorated with the old way of reinforcing along the foundation).

- It is easier to build the parts I'm planning on the inside, as there are tubes to connect to for many heights.

Oh, and I don't think all the buildings in the whole town should have black roofs, because it would make the town look downright boring. They did have colors in the middle ages too, you know.

Yes, I'm back!

I agree. If we have to build roofs after a simple standard, the absence of colors will be dreary. On the other hand. If we were allowed to build black roofs as we wish, then it might look very well all in black.

I also agree that if you makes your wall ( that looks great  ) with all these 2x2 tiles, it'll have a strange look next to non-snot walls ( I can't make a wall with so many 2x2 tiles! The wall is a proposal. Again. I'm all for a standard, but the proposal did not, to my knowledge, break the latest compilation of standards in these threads.

I have some plans for a great roof and floor, but it will be a waste of time to build if they are found too fancy.

In conclusion. I would like to know the level of detail we should aim for:

- Basic: Use basic building techniques and bricks that are common.

- Normal: Basic building as we see in City sets with furniture and other parts that may be built creatively (ie. it is allowed to make a door with more than a single door piece)

- Detailed: Use any technique to aim for the highest level of detail and realism.

I am fine with Basic or Normal. They take considerably less building time, and there might be more people who can replicate the creations.

Don't worry, I'm sure it won't be done for a while anyway.

I think a relatively basic wall design would be good, but I like the idea of having a few dark grey parts (like tiles) for detail.

mhh..*think a lot* maybe you can make the part on the side ( where the other walls will be attached ) with normal bricks and make the middle something like it was repaired (so with your snot technique ), so the middle will looks different because it have been repaired (after an attack or something ), you can also put someone finishing the details of the wall!

That's just an Idea if you really don't have enough grey bricks^^

Hi LasseD, I love the detailing on the wall, though im not sure if others can replicate it. It is showing others how to adapt new techniques, which is the whole idea of this community build!

Im happy for you to go detailed and surprise us with what comes out! As for roofing standards, we probably don't need one as all buildings are individualistic, so they should have unique roofing too.

You know what ISC?

I'll just build both and make instructions for both! End of "Tiling for wall"-discussion.

Make sure to repeat the part with the roofs loud that all can hear it. Sandy might give you a hug

Building on.

Lasse D, great! If there are instructions, I might be able to learn a couple of wall techniques. Thanks in advance. :classic:

Nice work Stol.

I've also posted my first two creations in the Beta Group Thread. I updated my Blacksmith to fit the EBCCB criteria and also did an Alchemist.

Here's a shot of both of them together...

alchemist_and_blacksmith.jpg

They aren't next to eachother on the plan, but I hoped that posting a shot like that would let everyone know how cool it's going to look when we have the whole castle together. Just imagine 40 of those all together!

~Thrash

Posted

Ohh!

That looks great with them put together like that Thrash, and you did a great job with the Alchemist!

Now we need to find out how to magically transport our models together....

Posted

Oo awesome Thrash, that alchemist door is just too.. too .. amazing!

Oh I wanted to say.. now that I destroyed my PTV entry ( I kept it build during a month... I had no other pieces to makes anything else, every time I needed to do something in my house I had to move it then replace the fallen parts... so I decided that was enough, I shot a lot of pictures of it, then destroyed it. ) I can start to build something for the Community Castle! YAY !

so so so ... what will I do ? ^^

I noticed Apothecary was on the list on the first post. I am interested in building that. Could I? You see I don't really know how this is going.

Sure! Just say that you want to join the build and ISC will tell you that you're in Group A or B. Then you can just start building.

Stol and Thrash, your designs look great! :classic: Your right, Thrash, this is going to be one awesome castle!

Some things came up outside the world of plastic, so I'll be a little late on my designs.

Thanks for the comments guys! I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with for their creations.

Stol and I are roommates here at the University of Delaware, so here's a picture of our creations put together:

Left: Stol's Masons Guild, Middle: My Alchemist, Right: My Blacksmith

I'll try to get my thieves guild done soon!

I just made a 16studs length wall... it used approximately all my grey bricks! I think it's going to be hard for me^^ anyway I'll try to manage an armoury!

thrash, your 3 creations together are really nice, I just want to build mine and put it along with yours, even if it'll be impossible^^

Thanks! Hopefully all of the creations have been made we can find a way to get them all together, so there's some hope!

On a different note, last night I finished up my Thieves Guild. For more details of it, check out the Beta Group Thread. Here are a few shots of my creations and Stol's Mason's Guild all together.

And lastly, a teaser shot including a Falconer that my mom (she saw what I was building and decided to join in) has been working on pretty hard over the past few days. Hopefully I'll be able to post more in depth shots soon once she's finished!

I must admit, I'm very jealous you've got a friend and a parent that like LEGO! I'm the only person I know IRL that likes LEGO! :cry_sad:

All of the buildings are looking great!

bad luck pickerel :/ I have 2 friends who likes lego ( but they lives at 500km now that I moved ^^ ) and My girlfriend like lego too!

I did my first wall test , let me know if you think that's good:

P7141546_2e4fc2.JPG here it is!

P7141549_246a05.JPG

this little part.. I don't know why I put it but I like it ! is it ok even if it is a little out of the baseplate ?

P7141550_2e83b2.JPG

hey beware sigfig, you're falling! I also did the upper part In brown, because I prefer it like this, they used to make it in wood to make it more "lighter" for the walls (not on all castle, but they were some like this ^^ ) is that ok ?

here is the Gallery where you can see the inside of the section that I started, but that's not finished ^^

so Is this wall ok for our community castle ? or will I have to modify it ?

Your wall looks great. I really like the smooth gray peices that you put on it. I'm not sure what ISC will say, but I think that the brown catwalk will look strange next to other creations that will have a dark grey catwalk, so you should probably change it to dark gray. The brown does look really cool though, so maybe ISC will want to change the standard to brown...

~Thrash

Posted

I think the brown looks fine!

However I don't think brown should be the standard, because it's a much less common color than dk. grey.

I don't think having 1 different looking catwalk will be so bad, considering the outer wall sections will all have different details anyway.

They will? Won't it look a little odd have one extremely-detailed, tiled wall, one exactly like the one ISC made, and another with stained-glass windows and arrow slits? :sceptic:

EDIT (Didn't want to double-post): Guss, your wall looks good! I think the tiles are a little too centered, though.

Awesome to see 5 modules together!

Well done on signing up Stol and your mum to get all the building done

I have so far built a wall and parrt of the fighting arena, so hopefully it wont be much longer.

I like your wall Guss, I understand you only have brown for the top ( which looks nice) however if you come across some dark grey that would look more consistent with everyones builds.

As for one person tiling their wall and others having arrow slits etc, its a big walled castle after all, they will need different functionalities as well as using different supplies from quarries over time to build such a massive wall IMHO.

I will add Guss and Skipper to the lists now. ( I now own your soul of course)

Cheers

Keep up the good work, and if anyone gets the chance to whip up some instructions for their modules, that would be awesome! :classic::thumbup:
