Ok. Wall height is a key component here. I have a great idea for the stables, but my wall would almost have to be a minimum of 2 wall sections (and that's pushin it).

How tall is one wall section going to be (bricks high)?

How tall is the outer wall going to be in wall sections?

Unless I missed this part of the discussion earlier.......

And just for clarification (a list of all these UPDATED requirements would be great in the first post, maybe?), the wall needs to be a minimum of three studs deep? Is this because I can use an inverted slope brick at the top to give the walkway support?

Starting construction tonight.

We should definitely edit the first post to include the new guidelines when we decide on them, for easy access if we forget.

I know a good technique for hay bales. Just hold a bunch of yellow bars together with a rubber band.

I will edit into the first post all the agreed upon dimensions.

You can build a double height wall as long as there are ladders or steps down to the two ends perhaps.

Cheers

Nice idea for hay bales too Erd

cagri, I have a question about your wall-system: in your model, you have two walls against each other (the outer wall and the "white wall", which seems a bit redundant to me. Also, if every room is against the outer wall, where would windows go? What about upper floors?

You're right :) My module system turned out to be a useless one, I didn't think of those. Let's hear other solutions.

I'm still not seeing the "big picture" here. You guys are all just talking about things that go on the yard of the castle - stables, blacksmith, chicken pen - but what about the actual castle building? It can't be just different things surrounded by a wall, can it?

Thank you...

I agree. We should focus on building a castle rather than put the focus on building small vignettes or whatever.

I truly don't care if there's a blacksmith or not.

I want ot build a castle and if people want to integrate a blacksmith or tradesman in their module, then fine.

I'm away form my collection for two days from today, So i'll see if I can do round 2 or 3... :sweet::grin:

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but what about a Barracks and a prison as part of the main building?

Or a banquet hall, a throne room, a tower? That is, for the main building.

Dear KimT and all,

would it be an idea to come up with a tentative layout?

Location of gate tower, keep, maybe parts of the castle are connected via drawbridges?

Ofcourse this will not be set in stone.

But it could give an idea of the general direction.

Also, since some people want a 12 brick high wall and other 6.

Integrating this later on may become difficult without an overall view.

We could discuss among ourselfs the tantative layout as we go (build) along.

Just an idea.

Kind regards,

Teddy

I agree.

We seem to have started off on the wrong foot here.

I think an idea would be to have an overview (bird's eye look) and divide the castle into baseplates.

When that's done, people could sign up to do the different modules.

Of course we should have some interior as well, but I do think we should put our initial focus on building the frame - i.e the castle and it's outer walls.

I am incapable of doing such an overview, since I wont be around the next week.

So for now I say: Good Luck and Have Fun!

i think the same way. otherwise that could turn out to be a real mess at the end. So i think it's the best if somebody how got LDD makes a raw overview so we can exchage our opinos and have something we could hold on.

Is it to late to join? If not could I please? Well I haven't really been following this because I only just found it but do we build any castle MOC we want to the base plate including the 2 technic bricks?

I'd like to join the build. I made a blacksmith shop today that fits the criteria. I'll try to get the pictures up in the blacksmith's shop thread as soon as I have them ready.

The more the merrier, and it looks like we have changed the idea into a giant castle split into parts for groups to build.

Im off to give LDD a go and see if everyone is happy with the initial layout.

Cheers and great to see so many interested parties.

here is a very rough layout on 9 32 x 32 bases

looking for more input, as my patience for LDD is very short.

castlegroup31.jpg

do we feel this is a big enough area?

bases are coloured to see alll 9

very basic 6 high wall, only one brick thick. Obv not intended as final merely a guide.

cheers

I think that's plenty big.

I'm not a castle design expert, but I think that looks like a good design so far!

Would we then add our modules inside of the outer wall? Would we not need to make a wall around the module?

Hmmm... :sceptic: What about the other ideas suggested? We can't have JUST stables and blacksmith open- there are others waiting to particiapate. Besides, what ever happened to posting an FAQ in the first post? I need to know if overhang is allowed, Whether or not the inner portions can be a different color, if the guards' walkway can go through the roof....

Hi! I may be interested in your castle build, if it's still open.

Are the walls going to be kept 1 thick, I know you said it was rough and basic but I want to see what you're thinking. :classic:

I think it should be like this:

ldd1.jpg

10 high, 8 wide one floor underneath. Perhaps it could be open on on side with arches, like a cloister?

Thanks, Pickerel

EDIT: Just wanted to mention a few things. I think it would be interesting if we added an astronomy tower; maybe with a wizard or garden, with lots of fungi and mysterious plants... :alien:

Is this castle layout going to be multiple floors, or single floored? Are all the outdoor things going to be outside or inside the castle walls. Maybe I should see if you let me in before asking my many questions that have most likely been answered in this thread... somewhere... :look:

(looks at self in mirror admonishingly for being overenthusiastic)

The outer wall is 1 brick thick, so use 1 x 2 and 1 x 4 bricks, not 2 x 2 and 2 x 4 bricks.

Overhang is allowed as long as it will not affect the module to the left or right.

Yes, inner portions can be of a different color, just look at the blacksmith topic and see Metalandi's design.

If you want the guards to access the roof, you have to design it into your module, just follow the basic rules.

And I believe we are doing only a couple different modules at a time so we can have a few different ones to view. This way, other people can contribute their own style to different buildings. At least that was the original idea. But since we are changing the format a little bit (and this is all up to KimT and ISC) we very well may end up with 2 smithys and a few stables, and other buildings of course.

I dont't know, I just don't know that one?

Hope this answered a few questions,.....and give them time to update the posts in the beginning.

Here’s a picture of a layout I was thinking about. Each one of the small squares would be a 16x16 base, and then the bigger squares would be 32x32. The two tilted structures you see in the middle would be 16x32…I was thinking those could be a church and something else.

To keep the castle symmetrical, we could make all four of the corner towers be the same (5=13=21=29).

Then we could have the guardhouse be at location 1, and the other three big bases could be reserved for other large structures (stables, mess hall for the soldiers, etc.).

And of course, the keep would be at location 33.

Obviously, there is a lot of room in the center of the castle for whatever we want to put in there.

Also, there are so many slots on the outer walls that we’ll probably have room left over after adding the best entry of each type. Maybe at the end we could have a wildcard competition of some sort so that all of the best runners up can get in the castle too.

Also, I think that we should just stick with the wall design that’s been posted in the first post. It seems to have worked fine for all three of the submissions so far…

Let me know what you guys think!

thrash, I think that your layout is very nice, there is a place for everyone ^^ and I agree for the walls, I think it's the good way to make them.. but I was wondering, with a so huggee castle, will these walls be high enough ?

Posted

That's a good question. Only 6 studs high might be a little short for castle walls. Maybe we should up the size to 12 studs for the 16x16 baseplates and then on the 32x32 baseplates we could go higher to 18 or maybe 20 studs high.
