WhiteHexagon Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 does anyone know if this set includes the evil glued parts problem? ie the 4x4's on the base board and figures, I remember one of the sets did, but can't locate which one now. Quote
Guss Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I bought it one month ago, and the board is glued to a plate. it's even written on the box : " the chessboard is glued together" here is my brickshelf file for it : http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=346901 ( when public) oh ! and the white queen have a reversible happy/scared face ^^ Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 thanks! any of the pieces/minifigs glued? Quote
brickzone Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Pieces not glued in my one. However, I bought a Viking chess set and it had some glued parts, even though one my brother bought did not. The boards are always glued. Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 what do you think of the chance of unglueing the board? Has anyone heard of anyone doing this successfully? Quote
Guss Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 the pieces are not glued in mine too, I used some of these to make my PTV entry ^^ to Unglue the board ? I wanted to try ... I think it can be done without breaking pieces, but It'll be hard. ( finally I preferred to avoid problems , and I abandoned ^^ ) Quote
RichardAM Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 ...here is my brickshelf file for it... What are the pieces on the underside, shown in this photo? Are they Lego? Quote

singaling Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Can anyone tell me if the Castle Chess 852001 minifigs are included as part of the Giant Castle Chess 852293 minifig collection? Quote
Doctor Sinister Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 what do you think of the chance of unglueing the board? Has anyone heard of anyone doing this successfully? I managed to do it - just for the heck of it. I completely destroyed the baseplate in the process, but the plates were OK. Dr. S. Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 I managed to do it - just for the heck of it. I completely destroyed the baseplate in the process, but the plates were OK. That what I was assuming would happen :( but what about the glue used? was it possible to remove from the 4x4s? if so how? Quote
WhiteHexagon Posted October 28, 2008 Author Posted October 28, 2008 So I had a go at liberating the 4x4's from an older Knights chess set. I took the approach of trying to melt the glue... 'tap hot' water didn't seem to help, so I added some boiling water from the kettle. [Kids, don't try this at home!!] I poured the water slowrly onto the back of the board while it was floating in the sink full of hot water. After a minute of so I had another go, and sure enough the pieces started poping off with the help of a thin pallet knife!! I'm not sure I melted the glue, maybe just softened the LOGO plastic itself enough to weaken the bonds. It took another two more kettles worth, and dipping/soaking between every 6-10 pieces depending of how stuck they were. The 4x4's had some trace of glue down the edges which I carefully scrapped away with a knife. Although this has removed the sheen from the plastic, I'm not too concerned because the edges are not so visible in the project I had in mind for these pieces. There is some white traces of glue visible on the undersides of the blacks pieces, but really it's not that bad and doesn't seem to interfere with connecting to other bricks. Just looks a bit untidy. And what comes of the white base board... well if your town is missing a small snow covered hill, look no further! Yes sadly the board warped under the heat. It's still in 1 piece but covered in glue, so I'm not sure it's worth trying to straighten. In fact, in the light of day I can see that it's pointless to even try and rescue the board, it's covered in glue, but better that way than on the 4x4's. Overall I'm happy with the outcome, I was expecting to break many of the 4x4's, but with the base board being so much softer it wasn't as bad as I'd imagined. Quote
brickzone Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I think I'll just keep my chess boards for some occasion when I want to build a structure on a checkered black and white floor. Quote
