menad Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 (edited) 8258 is the best technic set of this year. I dont think it is a SAH exclusive, although its very expensive. As the box shows, the set contains only one M - motor, a battery box and a polarity switch. So, the PF elements dont explain the price, whitch is a little higher than the Bulldozers price. I can only think it has a lot of pieces ( 1800+). Its a very complex model, because the only one M-motor controls four functions: working stabilizers, rotating the turntable and moving up and down the two linear actuators. Finally it has a V8 engine. Although Im not a big Technic fan Iwant to buy this because of the complexity ( long and interesting build) and the cool design. Edited May 16, 2009 by menad Quote
CP5670 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I do like that aspect of it. As I said earlier, it's the first set since the Space Shuttle to have four functions and two transmission rings off one motor like that. Also, having two independent geartrains on the turntable means that we might see some interesting gearing there. The standard way to do this for MOCs is to have a differential going through the turntable, but that has never actually been done in an official Lego set, at least not yet. Quote
LordGalewind Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 I like 8263 because it's a concept that TLG hasn't done yet, although it's not clear what functions it has. Well as it seems 8263 is at my local toys r us! No sign of the other sets, but the shelves are becoming quite empty and many things are on sale...a good sign that more are to come! The snow groomer is 54.99 (of course five dollars more as always at their store) and has 590 pieces. Once I acquire some financial capital, I will be sure to nab it and any others when they show up, and a review or two won't be out of the question! If anyone is curious I'm sure I can take a few pictures in the meantime. Quote
furious Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 The last set I got from the technic line was the Excavator #8294. The first round of 09 releases were a real let down to me. These three sets really make up for that. Quote

LordGalewind Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 (edited) This topic hasn't shown much life in awhile...so here's a new view of 8263 for you to look at. This image raises a few questions and interests: with the front differential shown, will this indicate 4WD like it predocessor; 3 linear actuators can be seen, along with possible motorization but there doesnt seem to be much room for that;the new square beam can be seen by the differential in the front; stickers oh noes...!; and lastly where is the drive ring and knob that will control the functions? CP5670 Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 This image was posted on TechnicBricks too. It pretty much backs up what we thought earlier; that set is very similar to the old 8459. There should be enough room for an M motor above the engine, as this model is somewhat larger than 8459. From a previous image, the manual wheel for the LAs is in the back, although I'm not sure about the transmission switch. There is a red lever in the old image that no longer appears in the new picture. It's a good source of LAs, but it is fairly expensive and doesn't bring anything new to the table if you already have an 8459 like me. I will probably save my money for 8258 instead. When are these sets supposed to be released? Quote
Smithy Posted June 14, 2009 Posted June 14, 2009 Acording to the website with the latest pictures on (brandora.de) the sets are due out in September. Do a search for technic on that site and you should be able to see the sets with alternative pictures. Quote
5150 Lego Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 It's a good source of LAs, but it is fairly expensive and doesn't bring anything new to the table if you already have an 8459 like me. I will probably save my money for 8258 instead. My thoughts exactly. Whats worse is that since its using LA's, you still need a power functions motor. Other wise you'll wear your thumbs out turning the control knob. So in order to make this model enjoyable, you'll need to spend an aditional $30 on top of the estimated $90 retail price. Quote
u98925 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 although I'm not sure about the transmission switch. There is a red lever in the old image that no longer appears in the new picture. My guess it the exhaust as per 8295. Check out the angle of the exhaust in all the pic above and the one below- Quote
CP5670 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 My guess it the exhaust as per 8295.Check out the angle of the exhaust in all the pic above and the one below- That would make sense. I also thought that exhaust pipe looked strange, but it's common to see building mistakes in these preliminary images. The black railing on the side is not properly built either. Quote
LordGalewind Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 Here 8063 Tractor with Trailer may be some proof that this relatively unknown set may be out there after all. I like the color, but the tractor is basically a clone of its predocessor 8284. The trailer does add some aesthetic and playability details, along with a plethora of some new panels. I think this is a bad move on part of lego to release something like this, unless they further modify the tractor before its release (if it is released). Quote
gogoba Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 I'll probably get it, that image still looks a bit preliminary, so there might be more changes on the way. Lots of wheels and tyres, which is always good. Quote

Buttons Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Does any country have a price yet? It is on the site, but guess where I found it? On the American section. To be honest if the carousel is worth a frontpage mention I would guess these three sets certainly are. Quote
CP5670 Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 (edited) It shows up but is "not available" on the US site. $160 was the US price quoted earlier in the thread, so it definitely won't be cheap. That is roughly in line with 8421's price though, which also had over 1800 pieces and a motor. I'm also interested in the crane mechanism in particular. This may be the first official Lego set to have a differential in the middle of a turntable, something that MOCers have done for many years. Edited June 27, 2009 by CP5670 Quote

Blakbird Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I just received my neew LEGO catalog in the mail, and the new Technic sets are in it. I called my local LEGO Store, but they don't have any of them yet. However, Shop@Home now has them for purchase (no longer listed as "not available"). Sets 8265 (Front End Loader), 8263 (Snow Groomer), and 8258 (Crane Truck) are on their way. Final US prices are: 8265 - $79.99 8263 - $49.99 8258 - $149.99 I'll post reviews as soon as I get them built. Note that 8263 is available now, 8265 is backordered until July 15, and 8258 backordered until Aug 5. In my experience, TLG usually ships well before the "will ship by" date. No sign of the mysterious tractor with trailer. For Mindstorms fans, note that NXT 2.0 is also available. Quote
5150 Lego Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Very cool. Thanks for the info Blackbird. Looking forward to your reviews. Quote

Can't wait for the reviews! Quote
5150 Lego Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Just got off the phone with my local Lego Store. They have an arrival date of mid July for all 3 sets. I have alot of Lego gift certificates i received at Christmas,as well as some discounts i received for helping out during some Lego events that I've been saving for these three sets. They should be calling me the second they touch down. Though my main concern is 8258. I can wait on the others. But i have to admit, i didn't care for 8263 since its basically a bigger version of 8459 with LA's. But i have to admit, the more i see it,the more i like it. Might have to pick it up at some point if funds allow. Quote
