Ogre Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Viking shields are stickers? All of them beside the CMF one? That's lame if true. Not 'all' of them...the over-sized 'shields' on the side of the Viking ship, etc., aren't stickers. The others are though. Though I would have preferred printed, they've held up well. Quote

I heard that's why a lot of people were excited for the CMF Viking for a printed shield. Nice armies Ogre! I really like that Viking one. I'm going to have to get some more of those. EDIT: You beat me to it Ogre! I no longer like your armies anymore. Edited August 28, 2011 by K-nut Quote

I really like the Vikings...except for their helmets. Something more 'historically accurate' would have been nice. Aside from that, they rock. (Makes me wish I had picked up more than just ONE of the 'army of Vikings' set when it was on sale at TRU. Sheesh.) Quote

I keep some of the helmets but replace some of them with hair. They do make good Barbarians when you do that. Quote
ziljin Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) Interesting about the shields. I will probably only get the oversized ones then. And then get like 100 of the CMF vikings and use those as regular shields. I am not sure if I want to buy used sticker shields on bricklink. Yea switching the hair can make them look more barbaric! I actually bought a Qui Gon Jin so I can use his hair as a barbarian! I should probably buy some random hairs and replace some of the viking helmets. Also you can remove the horns but then you might see the inside of the head and it looks funny when you notice the head. Edited August 28, 2011 by ziljin Quote
Magnus the Great Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) Shields cost a lot but I usually prefer having a shield than without. It also depends on what weapon the minifig has & what kind of warrior it is. Archers & warriors, with two-hand grasped weapons doesn't need a shield. A tribe living in a remote jungle, mountain or desert might not want to carry a heavy shield. Regarding Vikings, I have been taught shields were very common. Swords, on the other hand, were unusual because it takes a lot more metal to make a sword than a spear or a battle-ax. Thus was a spear the most common weapon, followed by a battle-ax & a sword. Helmets fitted with horns is a big no-no. It's kind of like dressing a hockey player in a tutu. I wish Lego could make a couple of average vikings without a chain mail or helmet. A simple viking with an animal-skin armor, a cap, a wooden shield & a spear or a small axe. After all, it is a Danish company. But then again, it's Lego. It is far from being historically accurate. Assemble your troops as you please. For my Vikings I try to mix torsos, headgear, weapons and shields as much as possible. Some have helmets, others have hair, hats or hoods. He appears to have less armor on his printing, and no arm armor, and he has an axe. I just started watching the Deadliest Warrior series. Seems Vikings did wear ringmail armor and metal helmets. Perhaps thats at their peak? and the average warrior only had leather armor and no helmet? Well if I don't get stickered shields I only have the CMF one, seems kind of odd with no variation, but I guess it should be fine. Most of my other factions only have 1 type of shield anyway. Quote
K-Nut Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I took pictures of my army before I could replace the helmets. I should have my pics up later today. Quote

Yes, but the CMF Viking has a chain mail under his jacket. At Wikipedia one can read the following: "A wealthy Viking would have a complete ensemble of a metal helmet, wooden shield, mail shirt, and animal-skin coat, among various other arms and accoutrements of war. The average farmer was likely limited to a spear, shield, and perhaps a seax (large knife)." That's about the same as I've learned in school. Maybe I'm too meticulous about it since I'm Swedish. Anyway, I'm thinking of painting a few shields to get more variety. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Great armies Ogre! I just started getting a few vikings and would definitely like to build up a troll army, but since I missed the boat on that one it will be a little pricier than I want. As far as the Vikings, I don't mind the helmets with the horns. It doesn't have to be historically accurate, I think it looks good. It is different than every other faction so that works in their favor. But I agree with adding hair to some of the characters would work well. My intention was making more of a barbarian horde with the vikings instead of an "army" army. Quote
K-Nut Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Dragon Masters: My smallest army pictured. I hope to get some more in the coming months. My sigfig is the mounted knight on the far left. Dragon Knights: Sorry for the blurriness. My biggest army to date. One is wearing an orc helmet because I can't find the original. They're lead by the Main antagonist in my Castle world, the dark mage Emeraldous. Barbarians: This was taken before I switched out some of their headgear. When I get more Gladiators they will become the Barbarian elite guard. They look pretty nice don't they? Black Knights: Now why is WhiteFang leading them? Because I made him in real life and he looked pretty awesome. Lion Knights: I had more of these guys but took them apart. The Knight with the Cape on the right is the Captain of the Guards. He looks pretty nice IMHO. Orcs: One of my favorite armies. I put a Star Wars fig in back to be an Ogre. He also looks pretty nice there. I somehow lost my pics of my Crownie army, which besides the King is only 6. When I get more of them I'll post my Dark Dwarves. Quote
Magnus the Great Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Does anyone know if Lego has released a formal leader of the Dragon Knights? K-nut The Gladiator does match well with the barbarians & the Gamorrean Guard with the orcs. I guess the zombies from Pirates of the Caribbean, Dobby from HP & Yoda from Star Wars might blend with the Orcs as well. Nice mix of red & white plumes among your Lion Knights. I'm missing that Lion King from King's Carriage Ambush. I want him but I don't know which faction he can lead. My Lion Knights already have a leader in Duke Aslan. Quote

I don't believe there's been an official leader yet. Quote
ziljin Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 (edited) K-nut very nice armies. Your barbarian horde is wonderful and the gladiators look great for it! I am jealous of your white plumed Black Knight those are rare/expensive I believe. Edited August 28, 2011 by ziljin Quote
TheLegoDr Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Great armies K-nut! The gladiator helmet does work well since it is so different. And the Star Wars figure does blend in fairly well. Plus it adds another dimension since not every "orc" would probably be the same race/breed. Good variety! Quote

Artanis I Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 It's not nice to tease the AFOLs... New army pics: Updated Troll army, plus my Vikings (not all...am still missing some, will update when I find them all. LOL) I'd like that many orcs, at the moment my numbers aren't very threatening - it wouldn't take much to wipe them out. ...and I said that because this week will be the last chance I get in a while. Will try tomorrow. I've been waiting ages for time to take the photos, I've been wanting to share these pics for a long time. Quote
ziljin Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 (edited) K-nut Wow, very nice. And so expensive. I might get one months later from now but going to focus on CMF and cheaper ones for now. I might get some of those 10+ dollar minifigures later. Here are some tiny castle armies. Bull Knights KKI Lion Knights (they are lion knights right? And link to my Only one but that will change! Hoboman Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I love watching your armies grow over time ziljin. By the way, watched you Vlog #3 and am glad the storm passed you buy with relativly no problems. Quote

I can't wait to hopefully assemble a Minotaur army in Series 6. Back on topic: Nice small armies. I've always liked the Bull knights, but never got around to picking some up. I do have one, but I lost the torso. I did never like the rouge Knights, I mean why are they pants-less? Quote

But I have to start getting Bull knights also. Quote
K-Nut Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Another thing about Series 6, Celtic warriors! Even more Barbarians! Quote

K-Nut Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I'm sorry, the wheel alone cost $22 USD. Or to get them all separately costs $12 USD. We FOL's must burn lots of cash on our hobby. Quote
Bearded Castle Guy Posted August 30, 2011 Posted August 30, 2011 Well they're not sorted and the picture quality is meh but here are some 'Recent Recruits' The Lion Knights here are slightly outnumbered by the Dragon Knights atm.... Quote
