Brickdoctor Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 I thought that 3-D movies without the glasses looked really weird, hmmm hope it works well.. It doesn't look as bad now since there isn't the blue or red tint. Of course, he could always put on the glasses and close one eye. Or do what most people who hate 3D do - go watch a 2D movie. Yeah, for me it's fine. They've new glasses that look more normal and comfortable, unlike the paper ones they used to use. Now entire movies are 3-D as well, not just the snippets of them. I haven't been under a rock that long. I do know its much better based on what I saw last year at LLC, but I just have no idea what it looks like nowadays in theaters. Quote

DarthSion Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Pfft, you still need to wear glasses to watch the movie, besides polarised is a dead tech anyway. Quote
The Legonater Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Personally, I'd like to go to any of these, just to see them on the big screen. And who knows, maybe the EP.2 tickets will go on at half-price Quote
Clone OPatra Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 Pfft, you still need to wear glasses to watch the movie Well, yes, in fact I need to wear glasses to watch any movie. It's called not 20-20 vision. The real problem I see with these 3D Star Wars releases is that they're digitally 3D-ized after the fact. I've seen several 3D movies over the past year, and the ones that are worthwhile are those that are shot in 3D. The ones that were digitally converted are just lame. I admit that 3D can actually add something to some film, but only if the film was created that way. Quote
Oky Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 That may be true for the OT, but the PT could actually turn out pretty good since they're mostly CGI and can just be re-rendered in 3D. At least that's what I hope they're doing. Otherwise it would really just be lame like you said. Quote
Aethersprite Posted March 6, 2011 Posted March 6, 2011 I think I'll hold onto my cash up until Episode III, from then on out I'm sure I'll be attending. Agreed. I never saw any of the SW films in cinemas, and Episodes I and II are pointless anyways. Even though I'm not for 3D, I'd jump for a chance to catch SW films in the theaters. Quote
Oky Posted March 6, 2011 Author Posted March 6, 2011 Pointless? POINTLESS? Don't the podrace and Darth Maul mean anything to you? Those scenes along with the Battles of Naboo and Geonosis would be worth the ticket alone IMO, if they're done well that is. The 3D Podrace is also one of the main reasons why I'm excited for Star Tours II. Speaking of which, the opening dates have been confirmed to be May 20th for Florida and June 3rd for California. Can't wait! Quote

I never got to see episode 5 or 6 at the cinema. (Parents were cheapskates when they were re-released, they wouldn't take me in to the city... ) Quote
AndyC Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 What about Blu-ray?, 3D sucked in the 80s and it still sucks. Indeed. Although I'd be happy just to get a DVD release of the originals in their original version. And I don't count the cruddy quality Laserdisc rips we were palmed off with as 'extras' on the DVDs from a few years back. You can almost hear Lucas saying "See, these shoddy conversions prove I was right to CGI all over your favourite films" as you watch them.... Quote

The super mega deleted scene and original version pack is gonna come out. Only $100+. Quote
AndyC Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Lucky I got the special edition with the originals. AFAIK they've never actually released a decent version of the originals on DVD, only the '93 Laserdisc rips on the bonus discs of the not-quite-as-bad-as-special-edition Limited Edition DVD releases. They suffer from poor sound and being 2.35:1 unnecessarily crammed into a 4:3 picture format, so you get letterboxing at sides as well as top and bottom. It does at least allow you to watch them as they once were, but it's barely better than digging out a VHS copy. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 It does at least allow you to watch them as they once were, but it's barely better than digging out a VHS copy. Oh come on, that's a bit harsh. I have those "limited edition" original film DVDs, and there's nothing so wrong with the quality. I have all of the films on VHS too, and they are significantly worse for a number of reasons (my most hated of which being the "modified to fit your TV"). The sound isn't quite as good as the remastered versions, but at the same time there's nothing wrong with it. Also, you're only going to get the "everywhere" letterboxing if you watch it on a 4:3 screen; on a wide monitor (which are becoming more and more common these days, anyway), there isn't a problem. I don't see where the hate is coming from. Quote
AndyC Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 Also, you're only going to get the "everywhere" letterboxing if you watch it on a 4:3 screen; on a wide monitor (which are becoming more and more common these days, anyway), there isn't a problem. I don't see where the hate is coming from. If that were true, I'd complain less. On a 4:3 screen you'll just see the black bars at top and bottom, because the laserdisc version was always intended to give the widescreen experience on a 4:3 screen. On a widescreen display that isn't zooming you just get a smaller picture in the middle of the screen. Now, if your display is set to zoom (or just does it automatically) you're seeing something upscaled from a resolution similar to a high quality VHS player, which leads to a less-than-DVD quality result. It's a cheap job and fans of the films as they were frankly deserved better, especially given that most fans have now paid several times over for the films. It wouldn't have been that hard for Lucas to just put the widescreen remastered versions (from the final VHS release before the S.E.) through a proper transfer to DVD and we'd have all got what we've wanted all along. Churchill Posted March 8, 2011 Posted March 8, 2011 (edited) What always bothers me about the special editions is missing line said when Luke is looking at the Sand people through his binoculars, and realizes that there are more banthas than tusken raiders. I don't know why that line was taken out. It's a little thing, but it always bothers me. Edited March 8, 2011 by Churchill Quote

I have the original VHS of ANH, and I don't think I'll 'upgrade' to the 'special' edition any time soon. Edited March 8, 2011 by DobbyClone Quote

I didn't notice that particular thing, but that's low. You can't just take out a line out of one of the best movies of all time. Quote

Hey, if they thought they could get away with a CGI Falcon it could have been a lot worse... not to mention all that random junk they stuffed into the Mos Eisley scenes. Quote

RileyC Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 So I've thinking about this question for a while now and I thought I'd throw it out here for you guys. What part of the PT would you change so it made sense? And I'm not looking for kill jar jar answers here. Ones that actually have reasoning behind them. I'd love to hear what you guys think. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 In all seriousness, killing Jar-Jar would still make sense. He's not really needed. But you don't want those kind of answers. If I had to pick one, it would be to make Anakin at least 12-13 in Ep. 1. Because a 9-year-old with a crush on a 14-year-old queen makes for a very tough emotional transition when he has to become the main antagonist of the OT. Quote
RileyC Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 In all seriousness, killing Jar-Jar would still make sense. He's not really needed. Yeah but then you could say that about C3PO and R2. They are just more well written than Jar Jar. But yeah I see what your going at. My biggest concern with it is that we don't have enough of the PT. I think more time was needed explaining why naboo needs help, what things they are really needing. Then why the trade federation are helping the emperor because it's not like he told them his whole plan because they aren't in the final picture. And what do they have to gain from forming and alliance with him. Then more time at the end of EP I explaining how the techno union and banking clan converge with the trade federation. And where does Count Dooku come from (without reading into the EU)? Is he just lurking around in the shadows? But it contradicts with the Jedi saying there's always 2 sith. So when did he get converted? Another point is I think there's too many story arcsinterweaving everytime EP I and II are wrapping up. I feel it makes it hard to connect with any of the arcs and you can't feel for one of the characters struggles. But I still maintain that EP I is the best PT film. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Yeah but then you could say that about C3PO and R2. They are just more well written than Jar Jar. But yeah I see what your going at. Not really, because the droids actually do something of note. All of Jar-Jar's crucial actions can be replaced. There could be a (capable) Naboo officer with connections to contact the Gungans in Menace and a different senator to give Palpatine emergency powers in Clones. Quote
