Alright, settle down everybody. Let's not bring bad attitudes into this, or name calling. That's all bad form.

I'm going to merge this into the existing Star Wars thread, and I hope certain people can calm down.

Wow guys it's 2 noooo's if you no like then blank them out in your head.

In my OPINION, they make a lot of sense here and sound much less hammy than at the end of Sith. GL has control over all the SW empire if he wishes to change something then it's his prerogative. Seriously I had no idea that Boba's voice was changed between two editions but it makes sense, now he needs to do is overlay all the stormtroopers voices with the same voice actor.

OMG WOW, just saw the samples for 720p release and it looks incredible, so excited too bad its almost 4am.

Looks like the sabre Luke uses on the MF seems to be almost white rather than blue.

Looks so good, I thought the HDTV rips were good, this is fantastic.

To me it's just humorous. It's clear from the prequels that Lucas on his own is not an overly talented guy, and it was clearly the actual screenwriters and other collaborators keeping him in check on the OT that made them what they are. He probably holds a silent grudge that is part of why he feels like putting his own stamp on the OT all the time. He's also just overly obsessed with technology.

But anyway, it's funny that so many versions of these movies now exist. I don't think that has ever happened before on this scale (except maybe Alexander; I swear there are like six cuts of that film out there and it still sucks). So we can complain. Great. That's why I bought the DVD versions with the laserdisc rips. They are a little grainy and unenhanced, yes, but I don't have any problems with that. They look perfectly good on an older TV or any computer screen, which is what I have anyway. And I can always watch the newer versions too.

If Lucas went back and CGed out every single ship that was a model shot and replaced it with CG, that would be major. Adding sound for no reason? Fine, whatever. I still find the huge hanger that Han and Chewie run into when chasing Stormies in EpIV much more annoying.

It's just odd. I really dislike it. Not because Lucas if screwing with his films again but just because the, "no!" just doesn't work in the scene at all. Like I'm all for having the Ewoks actually blinking in ROTJ now. That always freaked me out. So Lucas is doing some good I think but it's very hit and miss. And also it's an iconic scene and I feel no talking is really needed to convey what Vader is really thinking behind it.

Agreed. Who was it that wanted to direct a PT film and Lucas wouldn't let him? Was that Spielberg? It's a pity he didn't get to. I get that Lucas likes special effects - he did make his own company just to do them for Star Wars - but I find it ironic that after his whole 'we now have technology to realize my vision of the PT' thing, the only film of the six that won an Oscar for them is the first one.

Welp. I've just saved myself £65

Also way to openly admit you've pirated it.

Unless I use the rips to watch so I keep the blu-ray disks in mint condition.

I find it humorous reading the OT fanboys crying, me as a REAL fan I don't care about a 2 second no.

I think that to a 'REAL fan' you would be less concerned about the specifics than the fact that Lucas keeps bothering to alter the movies. I don't care what he says about wanting to realize his vision or whatever - there is just no point in throwing in extra stuff and pissing off fanboys other than to milk this franchise for all it's worth. I completely agree with Clone O'Patra's post that it is ridiculous how many versions of these films exist at this point.

Well, the only problem is that this isn't oral storytelling that varies with each performance- it's cinema, what ranks next to literature as the most "set-in-stone" method of storytelling. It's not so much a matter of the story evolving as it is going back and changing what was already released. Now, to a certain extent I'm fine with this- many Director's Cuts, Extended Editions, and the like actually improve upon the original release, and in the case of something like Blade Runner or Superman II, are closer to the director's original vision of the film (In terms of editing, mind you), which wasn't originally achieved, usually due to studio intervention.

In the case of Star Wars, it's a matter of George claiming that the original versions of the films were only about at 30% of his "original vision"- a figure that comes off as so incredibly insulting to the many people who worked countless hours getting those visual effects just perfect and all the people who slaved to make Star Wars the classic it is today. So all that George really does is touch up on effects that really didn't need to be touched up on, and add in a lot of pointless filler and eye candy (Often to the point of distraction- I'm looking at you, Mos Eisley and Jabba's Palace...).

The fundamental problem behind Lucas as a director is that he views film-making as something between the director and the film, with no one else coming in between the director's vision. In reality, though, editors, writers, actors, and so many other people involved with a film can help add to or deepen the director's initial vision. A great line is meaningless unless it's delivered with a powerful performance. A thrilling chase scene can't happen without the proper editing, visual and audio effects, and a good score to boot. It takes a director to put all those things together, but he is not the sole contributor to the scene. I think after Lucas took the mantle of writing, producing, directing, and partially re-editing Star Wars, it warped his view a little of how a film should be made, and I think made him feel he was the only visionary behind it. It certainly explains his love of CGI (Which effectively negates all other contributors except sound editors and actors), and how he feels he has the right to go back and needlessly change what so many people toiled to make so many years ago.

Sometimes a director could be unhappy with how he handled the film, and might wish for a re-edit or something similar to better convey how he thought the film should've been directed. That is fine, and I can perfectly understand that. However, that's not what Lucas is doing. He's changing it for the sake of doing everything he wants to with CGI, and doesn't really take into account whether it positively or negatively impacts the film. And that's lazy film-making, first and foremost.

I know that he says he couldn't "realize his initial vision" in the original movies, but I'm calling complete **bleep** on that. You only have to go look at the awful initial treatment or watch the first movie to realize he basically just made it up as he went. It's plainly obvious, especially when you see the script and see that Darth Vader wasn't a title, it was actually the guy's name (writted as D. Vader... you know, like it was a towel or something).

But he realized he could turn it into his own personal money machine, and has been milking it for all its worth since then. Lucas is a hack, and we all know it. In his life, he's had one big idea, and has been trying to milk it for decades because he obviously doesn't have any other good ideas (and you only need to watch the PT to see that there was not a single good idea in the whole thing).

I'm not going to say I'm done with Star Wars, because I obviously buy things like LEGO, but I am certainly done with buying increasingly bastardized versions of the film. I'm going to remember how I used to like them, nyub-nybu song and all.

On a related note, has anyone seen this?

It's not the content I mind so much as the fact that pointless changes are still being made. Artoo has extra rocks! :hmpf:

This is very frustrating, I suppose SW is George Lucas' brain child and he can do what he wants with it. But what I find odd and slightly hypocritical is that the guy loves film and film history, didn't he complain quite a few years back when they colourised a Marx Brothers (or was it Laurel and Hardy) film? I'm sure I read that he wanted his kids to see the 'original' version.

I only watch the original versions of the OT, the dodgy special effects are part of the charm of the films, imho they don't detract from it one bit in some respects they add to it. The OT is of it's time, it is a huge part of film history and if it can't be left alone it should at least be made available to us on Blu-Ray in it's original form.

Kids films don't really need fantastic special effects to enthral, scare and amuse the target audience. Kids watch all kinds of badly made rubbish on TV week in and week out. I insist on watching Jason and the Argonauts whenever it's on TV - those skeletons scared the hell out my daughter to the point that she still refuses to watch it. I wonder how George Lucas would feel if Ray Harryhausen's effects were replaced with CGI shite?

It isn't fine, that's the point. It wasn't needed. Vader's sacrifice is was a great scene. It didn't need dialogue. David Prowse knocked it out of the park in that scene. You know exactly what he's thinking and you don't even see his face. It's just a plastic mask. Vader's new "NO" nonsense comes at the emotional climax - not only of the film, but of the entire series and it does so almost 30 years after the fact. It just doesn't make sense on any level, and it certainly doesn't make any sense to change it now.

Unless I use the rips to watch so I keep the blu-ray disks in mint condition.

Does that sound as daft to you as it does to me? The films aren't going to go Out of print anytime soon, and Blu-ray isn't exactly fragile? Also it's not out yet so IT IS piracy.

I find it humorous reading the OT fanboys crying, me as a REAL fan I don't care about a 2 second no.

Welp, Pack it up guys according to well respected internet member Darth Sion we're not 'REAL fans' It's been fun ride while it lasted. Is Farscape still on?

Out of interest what do you class 'real fans' as?

I bet it's another 'Drink the Kool-aid Scenerio' Where everything is right and we should accept it without examination BUY JAR JAR ACTION FIGURES, GIVE YOUR WALLET TO THE GLORIOUS LUCAS EMPIRE.

Someone who likes all star was, someone who doesn't act like its a huge deal over 1 word, someone who likes the PT, someone who doesn't go on and on about someone changing HIS OWN WORK, someone who doesn't go on about Anakin being a cry baby, or Anakin was a rubbish actor while completely ignoring how rubbish solo was.

Its 2 seconds on audio big deal, he has changed stuff before and when 3d comes out he will change again, get over it.

Ok guys. People are entitled to their own opinions. Nobody has the right to define what a fan of anything is or isn't, so let's not go there.

This thread if for discussing Star Wars. That includes being pissed by nonsensical changes on BluRay. That's the hot topic at the moment anyway. Stop the flaming.

These words have been put together. These words should never be put together.

It is a big deal. It ruins the whole scene. I don't care about magically appearing rocks or Obi wan's crazy madman howl. It's a stupid change and isn't needed.

Oh, doc ......gee I sound like Bugs Bunny......both A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back won Oscars for Visual effects, ESB also for best sound.....A New Hope received a total of six awards.....missed out on the big one though....best picture....hmm, what picture did win it eh ? Proof that the better film didn't win on the night right !

Now in this NO bit, sorry it just sounds tacked on as an after-thought.....just doesn't sound right, it would have been better to scream enough and then chuck him down the shaft as planned...no....just simply doesn't cut it.

I'm pretty sure his definition of 'all star wars' means the Movies, the Clone Wars and The Force Unleashed.

How the heck is that 'all star wars'?

To be honest, I didn't remember, because awards like that aren't normally something I pay attention to. I did look it up on Wikipedia; Empire and Jedi won a Special Achievement award because of visual effects, but only A New Hope won the actual Best Visual Effects award.
