My only hope is that Episode VII is based on the re-grouping of the Imperial forces.... with their first target being Endor and the Ewoks, but this time they'll be equipped with blasters that shoot straight and body-armour that stops blunt arrows!! I dont see why Chewie dying would be a big deal, sure it would suck, but the ratio of OT main character deaths to PT main character deaths is unfair. Most is the kind of writing only a Star Wars fan could find appealing. I look to stories that are more than a franchise. Most of the EU is nothing but stories depending on franchise. There is soooo much crap in there. Most of it is obviously written for fans and nobody else because nobody else in their right mind would like most of those stories. A good story can stand on it's own. 90% of EU doesn't have a leg to stand on. I'm probably being too generous too as it's probably closer to 99% :P. To be fair though half the movies don't have a leg to stand on either. Lets remake the prequels and pretend they never existed lol. Quote

Honestly? Only 100 to 200,000 have read said books. Vs somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 billion movie fans. I think there will be a lot more and a lot louder conglomeration of movie fans if they are suddenly told "oh by the way, Chewie died off camera in a book 10 years ago". Heck even most of the book reading fans hated the whole Chewie thing. And it is the perfect example of why they will be mostly just ignoring the books. There is no way to square the required accumulated book continuity, backstory and plot twists, with what the non book reading fans know, expect, or even want to see. The best you can hope for from the EU stuff is a few cameo's and Easter eggs, and maybe the use a couple of characters. It's not like they haven't done this before... Does anybody remember "Splinter of the Minds Eye"? The book that was written after Star Wars but before Empire Strikes Back. Empire wiped out pretty much everything about it. Besides, be honest, who here thinks J J Abrams has read any, let alone all of the SW novels? We can be fairly certain that George Lucas hasn't. We know he doesn't read other people's stories set in his world. So if movie VII is being made by JJ Abrams based on some outlines by George Lucas... Where exactly does that leave the EU novels? The EU will always be out there to enjoy, but that doesn't mean that the highest level of Star Wars canon (the films and television productions) need to be held to that standard. Quote

Actually, JJ Abrams is a large SW Fanboy, and I believe he's said multiple times he's read the SW Novels. Maybe I'm just biased as a guy who's read through a lot of and really enjoys the EU, but I don't think it's totally fair to say that all EU is horrible, because it isn't. Some of it is, I'll admit - I nearly gave up through FotJ (though the end picked up) and I'm having a tough time slogging through NJO - but there's a lot of good stuff in there. Zahn's work is genius, Traviss' series raises a lot of cool and interesting questions most authors wouldn't touch, and Allstan's work has a general good, light-hearted feel of the original trilogy. That said, do I expect them to 100% follow canon? Not in the slightest. There's just too much there for that to work. I do, however, hope that they at least give some subtle nods towards the EU, and perhaps frame it in a way that it doesn't just destroy everything. There's a big chunk of time between RotJ and the surrender of the Empire, almost 20 years. That's plenty of time to find space for the trilogy. And this is before characters like Chewie die. Quote
