Leo604 Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Not ridiculously big news, but film sites are apparently to be in the UK. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22491025 Quote
Faefrost Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 /Sigh! /Sob! /Sigh! It comes out today that Brad Bird, the uber director supreme of The Iron Giant and The Incredbles fame, turned down Star Wars VII when Lucas and Kennedy approached him about it last year. AIIIIGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!! Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 ^ There's still a chance he'll jump on board for a future Star Wars film. That's what I'm hoping for. Quote
Fives Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 There's a new rumor circulating that Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine is being considered for a major part in the new film. http://www.accesshollywood.com/roll-call-daniel-radcliffe-and-florence-welch-headed-to-star-wars_article_80340 Mara Jade, perhaps? Quote
Faefrost Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 She could pass for Mara Jade. But the age doesn't seem to match up with Mark Hamill? It will be interesting to see who or what she is. Quote
Fives Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Nothing's confirmed yet about her being in it, but it has been said that the story is 100 percent original, and won't take any plot stuff from the EU. Doesn't mean it won't borrow characters and completely change their stories. I'm just worried that they will completely crush everything the EU post-ROTJ has to offer. Quote

Some great stuff in there but then all the boring poorly written crap surrounds it. Like giving palpatine 3 eyed alien kids and stuff. Plus I tend to agree that holding strictly to stuff like EU really limits the potential of a story as you have to pay attention to all that crap. :P Something I hope to see is CHEWIE who's supposed to be dead. I found his death stupid and wish it gone from the record. :) Quote

I found his death stupid and wish it gone from the record. :) While I'm not a major fan of the EU material, I find that there are a few things that are important enough to maintain. Palpatine's clones are very cool, and that idea could be somehow added to the new films, maybe just have less clones. Also, the Solo twins and Anakin Solo, along with Ben Skywalker. No matter how they get into the new films, they need to be there. And finally, Chewie's death was a major turning point in Han's life. It changed him forever, and that could be a really great story to develop on screen. Rather than just tossing all the EU out the window, I think Arndt, Abrams and Disney need to cleverly adapt it into the films. Quote
Mr Man Posted June 6, 2013 Posted June 6, 2013 Ignore all the EU, we need something fresh, it will be impossible to do anything with the EU that won't anger someone, besides most of it is kind of stupid and would slow down the story massively. Quote

Given that Lucas has said that he openly avoided reading any of the post RotJ stories, be it books or comics, and i don't believe JJ Abrams has looked that way as well, I think it is pretty much a given that most of it will no longer be direct cannon. The Legonater Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 IMO the EU is 90% crap. Some great stuff in there but then all the boring poorly written crap surrounds it. Like giving palpatine 3 eyed alien kids and stuff. Nowhere does Palpatine have 3-eyed children. Or even children. Ignore all the EU, we need something fresh, it will be impossible to do anything with the EU that won't anger someone, besides most of it is kind of stupid and would slow down the story massively. Unfortunately, its also impossible to anything without the EU that won't anger someone. I really think they should go the MCU/Star Trek route and have the new movies in a separate reality. Given that Lucas has said that he openly avoided reading any of the post RotJ stories, be it books or comics, and i don't believe JJ Abrams has looked that way as well, I think it is pretty much a given that most of it will no longer be direct cannon. To the contrary, Abrams has gone on the record saying he's a huge fan. While I'm fine with Lucas not paying much attention to the EU, I find it a little disconcerting that he completely tore it apart. I don't expect the films to totally the EU, but I do expect at least a few nods, and I do hope they try their best not to totally destroy it. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Where did Lucas say that he avoided the post-Jedi EU storyline? I think there's at least one instance of him maintaining continuity between his movies and the books; Coruscant was first named in Heir to the Empire. (Assuming that that wasn't something Lucas had already decided and instructed Zahn to use - I don't think it was, but I'm not a hundred percent sure.) Quote
The Legonater Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Lucas did draw on a few points - Aayla Secura, for example, originated in the EU, and there's numerous instances of him trying to work in Quinlan Vos - but he never seemed to acknowledge any direct plot points. Quote

Right, but he doesn't seem to completely discard them or be ignorant of them - he does seem to know what's going on, as much as he claims that that's 'someone else's universe' that he can't control and doesn't play in. The Legonater Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Which merely makes it all the worse that he seemed intent on destroying everything with TCW. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Which merely makes it all the worse that he seemed intent on destroying everything with TCW. Indeed. (And he claimed to be having people do research on the subject, too! It was his daughter right? Was supposed to be doing extensive research on the EU before writing an arc for... the Nightsisters and Assaj Ventress, I think - and then proceeded to throw everything we knew out the window.) Quote
The Legonater Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Yeah. They did manage to get a couple points right, but a lot of it was right out the window. Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Nowhere does Palpatine have 3-eyed children. Or even children. *ahem* http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Triclops Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 *ahem* http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Triclops Aw, MegaBloks! I'd forgotten about that series, and you had to remind me of it. Argh, stupid Whaladons and TNTs. (That, by the way, is an example of a ridiculous bit of the EU, and I was happy to find out upon looking it up that many of the major plot points of the series have since been retconned.) Quote

The Legonater Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Despite all my knowledge, the EU manages to yet again throw me a curve-ball As Doc said, it should be noted that this is certainly one of the more obscure EU stories. Quote
BrickG Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 I'd argue that much of the EU has about the same amount of quality. Quote

True, but in both cases Lucas fell for those characters and decided to use them based on art work. Not stories. Comic book cover art in both these cases. Lucas, by all appearances is very visually driven. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 ^ To think that I actually used to like those books as a kid, too! I'm embarrassed to say that I actually own the first volume of those three books. (This was a time when I was thinking I might one day have a huge memorabilia collection and wanted to buy all those Star Wars-releated books that I thought were hard to find because I'd never heard of them before - it was something of a 'Dim Age' and I didn't get very far before I started devoting the money to LEGO again, but that was one of the books I bought.)
