Ultron Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Would you look at that...Star Wars continues it's trend of having 1-2 females in the entire movie. Seriously though, one new female lead? That's some bull. She better be awesome as hell Quote

Fives Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I'm ecstatic that we now have the cast! It looks so good! Its pretty obvious that John Boyega and Daisy Ridley are the new heroes. I have yet to see Attack the Block, so I'm not sure what Boyega is like, but now that he is the new hero, I'm gonna need to see it. Domhall Gleeson is a great actor, and it will be interesting to see where he fits into the story. He's kind of an awkward lanky guy, so I'm not sure what he could be. Oscar Issac is awesome as well, and could easily play either a hero or a villain. I could see him being a smuggler type character, kinda becoming the Han Solo of this new generation. I'm pretty sure that when Adam Driver was first rumoured, he was attached to a Sith Lord part. So he's likely gonna be the new villain. He doesn't seem like a villain, so I'm excited to see what they have planned. There was a rumour that I read somewhere that said Jaxxon, the Leppi smuggler from a comic, will have a role in the movie. If this is true, I could see Andy Serkis playing him via motion capture. If Jaxxon isn't in the film, I still believe Serkis will be playing something using mocap tech. Max von Sydow is probably the biggest surprise for me. I just didn't expect him. He'll be amazing, and he's likely gonna be the 'new' Obi-Wan, but who knows. Then theres the original cast, which everyone expected. Although, its kinda too bad Lando isn't back. I wonder where he'll fit into the story; maybe he's dead or something. I'm guessing now that we've got this big announcement to slake our thirst for news, no more info will be released till later in the summer. Somewhere it was speculated that the title would be announced at SDCC, which would be amazing, but other than that, I doubt we'll hear or see anything confirmed till close to the end of the summer. Hopefully I'm wrong. Quote

Sorry for double posting, but I didn't see these before. While the cast is light on females, I'm really hoping that Ridley is the main hero. It'd be amazing if the main protagonist for the next trilogy is a female Jedi. That'd be so damn cool. Quote
Darth Lurtz Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 While unlikely, it would be interesting if this was a retelling of the Thrawn Trilogy. Adam Driver could play Admiral Thrawn, Max Von Sydow could play Jorus C'baoth and Andy Serkis could play Rukh. Quote

Adam Driver could play Admiral Thrawn, Max Von Sydow could play Jorus C'baoth and Andy Serkis could play Rukh. I think they're avoiding any large stories from the Legends timeline. That big announcement they made about the future of the EU kinda confirmed for me that, while some aspects may survive in the new stories, for the most part the old EU isn't any kind of canon anymore. I stumbled across this interview with Dave Filoni from Wonder Con discussing Rebels, and it kinda gives some insight to how Disney is handling all the different stories and mediums they have planned for Star Wars. http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/04/27/star-wars-rebels-dave-filoni-discusses-the-approach-the-characters-and-fan-skepticism?page=1 At one point, he talks about how there were times in The Clone Wars where they were do something that would contradict a pre-existing EU story (the fate of Even Piell, for example), and he basically would have to say "Well this is what George wants. This is canon". He then goes on to say how, within Disney, all the different facets of the Star Wars storytellers, from the new trilogy to the Rebels series to books and games, all have contact with each other so they can make sure that everything lines up and makes sense. BrickG Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 http://kotaku.com/this-is-the-cast-of-star-wars-episode-vii-1569305101 Anyone know what Andy Serkis plays? And where is Lando? Quote
wesker Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Disapointed there's no mention of Lando. Hopefully he'll at least make a cameo at some point. Would you look at that...Star Wars continues it's trend of having 1-2 females in the entire movie. Seriously though, one new female lead? That's some bull. She better be awesome as hell There's still one more female character that hasn't been cast yet: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/JoshWildingNewsAndReviews/news/?a=99071 Still I hope they give Leia a substantial role in the film, especiallly in light of Han having a gigantic one in the new movie. If they fridge her early in the movie to motivate Han I'll be very disapointed. Quote
The Legonater Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Only new name I recognize there is Serkis, but that alone has me excited. This could be good! As for the lack of Lando, I'm not entirely surprised. He wasn't in ANH, so they could be paralleling that, and in the books (whether canon or not) he never showed up in too big of a role except for the odd job that he was running. So we may see something similar to that. Quote
Fives Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Another female sounds good. I'm really hopeful that the main protagonist is Daisy Ridley. I think having a female Jedi hero could be exactly the sort of change that Star Wars needs. Then again, people could see that as too much like their following the popular young adult female hero formula that has become so prominent thanks to The Hunger Games. Quote
Artanis I Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Only new name I recognize there is Serkis Let's make a club... So no Ewan Kenobi ghost then? Or Yoda for that matter. Will be weird for me without those two characters. Quote
BrickG Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 They're both dead. I know they can force ghost but if they're truly trying to basically do a generational change with Star Wars then they should probably not be involved. Quote
Fives Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I'm fine with Obi-Wan and Yoda not appearing. They were Luke's teachers. This movie takes place 30 years after ROTJ. They did their job with Luke, and now its Luke's turn to take their place. Also, I just watched Attack the Block. While a mediocre movie overall, I now have faith in Boyega's ability to play a hero. He's gonna be great. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Only new name I recognize there is Serkis, but that alone has me excited. This could be good! Let's make a club... Same here. While unlikely, it would be interesting if this was a retelling of the Thrawn Trilogy. [...] Andy Serkis could play Rukh. This makes so much sense that I am now even more sad than I was before about the fact that this isn't going to be the Thrawn Trilogy. Quote
Fives Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I'm surprised that so few people have heard of the cast members. Sure, some are kind of unknown, but for the most part they've been around for a while. Jonh Boyega and Daisy Ridley are essentially the newbies, with only one or two indie titles to their name. Adam Driver is also kind of unknown, but he's recently had more attention because of his role of the HBO series Girls. He also appeared in Inside Llewyn Davis, alongside Oscar Issac, who is also in this cast list. Issac also played King John in the 2009 Ridley Scott version of Robin Hood. Max von Sydow also appeared in that film as Loxley, although his most famous role is from the original Exorcist film. Domhall Gleeson is most well known for playing Bill Weasley in The Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2, as well as playing the lead in About Time (which is perhaps one of my most favourite films, I highly suggest it). Overall, they have a very strong cast with some magnificent actors who, with the direction of Abrams, will outshine all the performances given in the prequels (although that bar isn't set very high to begin with). While not all of my dream cast members are listed (Dane Dehann as Luke's son; he'd make an amazing Skywalker), this cast is a powerhouse of talent and will give the Star Wars saga exactly the sort of rejuvenation it desperately needs. Praiter Yed Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Max von Sydow is probably the biggest surprise for me. I just didn't expect him. He'll be amazing, and he's likely gonna be the 'new' Obi-Wan, but who knows. I thought maybe Luke would be the Obi-Wan character, I'm half expecting him to get killed someone to shout 'nooooo' and JJ Abrams to persuade John Williams to tinkle his piano keys so that we all know it's an emotional moment. Max Von Syndow is a really pleasant surprise though, brilliant actor, hopefully he'll be portraying Ming The Merciless . Edited April 30, 2014 by Praiter Yed Quote
montgocloud Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Wow. This casting is fantastic! The major draws for me are definitely Oscar Isaac (he was phenomenal as the lead of the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis) and Adam Driver (a great actor with a huge range, though I primarily know him from Frances Ha). Coupled with a competent man behind the camera, a great screenwriter, and John Williams, Episode VII looks to be far better than the abominable prequels. Quote

Yeah, now that I think about it, Max von Sydow makes a hell of a lot more sense as a new Sidious-like character, with Adam Driver potentially playing his apprentice, or apprentice to be. I found this on Zimbio.com. It outlines each actor and their potential roles based on what other info we have from leaked casting calls and what not. While none of it is confirmed, it kinda does help figure out where the actors fit in the story. http://www.zimbio.com/Beyond+the+Box+Office/articles/0YkA5dwcynX/Everything+Know+Far+New+Star+Wars+Cast I'm most excited by the prospect of Gleeson playing Luke's son. He has the perfect look for it, and the fact that he is ginger could hint that the other big female lead they have yet to cast could be Mara Jade. I'd love it if she was an aspect they kept from the old EU. Quote
Leo604 Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Other than the original three and Andy Serkis, I have no idea who the rest of these people are. Still excited though, Abrams will find a way to make it work. Quote
Darth Punk Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I agree Max Von Sydow would make an excellent Sith Lord type character. He was in Exorcist and Minority Report, probably the most well known movies to those here. Quote

Darth Punk Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I really liked Von Sydow in Minority Report. It's a good example of what kind of villain he can play. Quote
