The constant whining about 'Disney de-canon-fied my favorite niche of the expanded universe' has become very tiresome and is a good representation of how disconnected 'fan'nerds are from reality and how little they know or can imagine of what it takes to continue something as big as Star Wars and be creative with it.

Do you whiners really believe that a company producing new and fresh Star Wars content will actually willingly inherit all the expanded universe baggage that never ever was part of a real movie? What's more - all the stuff is still there. There's no sinister Disney agent invading your home and destroying your precious novels, comic books and stupid computer games. The only difference is that they're not canon anymore. Boohoo. Try writing a script that considers ALL former expanded universe stuff AND make it comprehensible to audience members who haven't read or played all your precious comic books, novels and stupid computer games. Good luck!

Disney wants to continue the Original Trilogy (and precede it with Rebels), not create an incomprehensible clusterf**** that panders exclusively to the extreme 'fan'nerds. That's a reality check for you.

That being said, Disney had on numerous times proven to be competent and creative with their IPs, quite contrary to what Lucas did with his.

Ok. Well, first off, they pretty much said: if it's now cw and the movies, it didn't happen! Could you imagine being a sw writer, spending years fleshing out the sw universe, just for someone to say: "it didn't happen, we nullified your novels".

Like I said, I'm a Disney hater. I hate Disney through and though.

Can't we just back to the Lucas days.

So, you hate when things get de-canonized and want to go back to the Lucas days......you mean the days when Lucas directed the prequels.....and completely de-canonized things like the background of Boba Fett (almost everything written about Boba's origins in comics and EU books was wiped away when AotC was released)?

YAWN. Cheap jokes. Actually, these knee-jerk-reactions made me think back about the hype before Phantom Menace was released. So much praise and anticipation before the facts. I wonder how many of those overly excited people felt like big idiots after the facts, when they realized how bad and utterly shitty the prequels were.

It's not far-fetched at all that all those hysterics who can't help but over-criticize each and every minute detail that's released of the new production before the facts will feel no less idiotic after the facts. Or remain in denial.

The most healthy way to go about this is: Be calm, don't be afraid. Wait until the movie comes out - you won't be able to change anything about it. When you've seen it, take a few days to let everything settle. Then write some meaningful critique, praise, review and or analysis. I'll write an analysis, I promise you that much. And I'll take my time.

All this hysteria beforehand is pointless, and I can't stand those sloppy, overly emotional and pointless 'reviews' so many people like to puke into the internet the minute after they've watched a movie just to be the first to pollute the barren ground for real debate and discussion with their stupid, meaningless and helpless stammering. I'm just sick of this phenomenon.

Just take a look at the internet or youtube - how many movies are labelled 'the worst ever' each week. How many 'plot holes' have been discovered, and once you ask the reviewer politely if he or she knows what a plot hole actually IS, the stammering starts or something utterly silly and ignorant is uttered. The number of 'overrated' movies is legion. As a matter of fact, if you are looking for meaningful reviews, I can give the following advice: If a review doesn't include the words 'worst', 'best', 'hate', 'plot hole' and 'overrated', chances are the review is a meaningful one. Good luck finding one!

I just laugh when I read those over-dramatic Tabloid articles, stating the title is poor. I really doubt they could come up with something as decent as it is.

I find that the title of the new film will have more meaning; is there another race of ancient force users?

I more than welcome that the EU won't be apart of the new film series. I recently read the Thrawn Trilogy set of books, and it went a little 'meh' to be honest. Thats coming from someone who did book reviews when I was at school.

Someone mentioned the killing off of the older characters? Thats another reason why I disliked the EU. Chewbacca's death during that time wasn't the greatest way to send of that character, but some people liked it I guess.

Hopefully with the gap between VI and VII, there will be some bit of organised Star Wars lore added, instead of bits of bogus being added for the sake of it, lets be honest; the EU was a mess.

I think it was a sarcastic piece. I only posted it because I thought some of the jokes were funny. "Cool-Hand Luke" I thought was quite clever, etc.

I do agree with pretty much everything you said, but I have only said the title doesn't sound good. I am withholding full judgement until the film comes out.

No worries, Borador - this comment was not at all directed at you, and I am the last person to judge someone because of a single post or just a link said person posted, now that would be silly. And granted, some jokes were funny. It's just that even these jokes about the title are wrong in so many ways.

I totally agree with what Mark Hamill said recently: People have unlearned what it is like to discover a movie, well, at the movies. If you really want to discover a movie and enjoy it and be drawn into it, just have the courage to steer clear from all those spoiler, leaks and details made public beforehand. The internet is a great tool to get information quickly, but it can also ruin a lot.

In German, the title 'The Force Awakens' translates into 'Die Macht erwacht', which even rhymes and sounds a bit more silly because of that than it does in english.

Could it be that the title 'The Force Awakens' alludes to something that has never happened before in the galaxy, far, far away?

Hopefully with the gap between VI and VII, there will be some bit of organised Star Wars lore added, instead of bits of bogus being added for the sake of it, lets be honest; the EU was a mess.

The EU was a mess, particularly during the Bantam era where Dark Horse & Bantam weren't totally in sync (setting Dark Empire a year after the Thrawn Trilogy felt ridiculous; "Horray, the New Republic is victorious against Thrawn and his fleet!" "Oh crap, we just lost Coruscant and are now calling ourselves 'the Rebel Alliance' again because of some gigantic fleet from the center of the galaxy that made Thrawn's look like nothing! And Luke declared himself a Jedi Master! And Leia declared herself a Jedi Knight! And she used some ancient dusty lightsaber from some weird vanishing crone, forgetting she had her own lightsaber Luke built for her!"

Then you had Bantam playing hopscotch with the timeline, jumping back & forth with each book, finding every little gap it could to throw in some galaxy-threatening adventure. And Leia waffling between making competent progress in Jedi training, only to be sent back to the beginning in the next story in the chronology because Politics & Parenthood must always dominate. And a million other things... at least when Del Rey came along, after Zahn cleaned up some of the mess in the Hand of Thrawn duology, they had more of a game plan... a sequential series, followed by a trilogy, followed by another sequential series, etc. Far less hopping around, except maybe within the Clone Wars time frame (I skipped all those books), and so far less need to retcon things (tho reading about how they worked in Luke & Leia finally learning more about their parents, from R2's hidden recordings, seemed painfully forced, because it happened right after ROTS was released and everything was finally fair game to tackle--but I didn't actually read Dark Nest myself)

For Chewie, however you received the death, it's largely George's fault. Del Rey wanted to raise the stakes from the Reset Button Happy Endings of the Bantam era, and George sent them a list of characters they couldn't kill, leaving Chewie off the list. And while the execution may not have been the best (tho I remember it written fairly well), stepping outside to look at it feels kinda epic: it wasn't some blaster bolt or minor scuffle that took Chewie out... it was a planetary body, which he roared his defiance at, after saving dozens of innocents as well as the Solos he loved. It took a moon to kill Chewie, and he was yelling "Come at me, bro!" the whole time.

Despite it all, I still enjoyed and loved much of the EU. The Thrawn Trilogy wouldn't have been a great movie Sequel Trilogy for several reasons, but still felt much like a good Star Wars story, if a little too techy and perhaps a bit too reliant on movie callbacks (thematic, situational, dialogue), and certain character quirks (Lando saying/thinking about 'the heavy end of the hammer' all the time). I'd love to see it animated as a DVD trilogy, akin to how Marvel & DC (mostly DC) animate various popular comic stories, where "canon" doesn't matter and different styles can be explored.

But I'm also glad they've got a tighter game plan going forward, now... no longer is the continuity team just putting out fires, attempting to 'fit' everything together retroactively. Now they can help guide it a bit. I'm confident we'll see plenty of material to cover the decades-long gap between VI and VII, but I'm not sure when we'll see it... if VIII and IX are meant to have surprises on an "I am your father"/"There is another Skywalker" level, then we might not see much until after the trilogy's complete; but if VII is where most surprises are revealed, or it seems like there's a chunk of those decades that are 'safe' to play in, we may see something target those (perhaps the first several years following ROTJ)

I'll be the first to admit the EU was a bit of a mess, and the past few years it's been getting worse and worse in quality. I was wondering about a total reboot a while ago, and I think it'll do it good. That said, I don't know if I'll be following the new EU. It's a lot of work, and I'm not feeling it as much as I used to. I just wish they'd stop rebranding the older books with that 'Legacy' banner.

They aren't! "LEGACY" is a Star Wars comic series from Dark Horse; the EU, including Legacy, had been rebranded as "Legends". It's to show that it's at apart from the new official canon, the new EU.

If only it were true that choosing to be not-spoiled was enough to prevent others from spoiling it for you.

I do want to go and see The Hobbit. I do not want to see previews of Star Wars while I am there. That's annoying. Looks like it'll be another eyes-closed-fingers-in-ears-la-la-la moment :hmpf:

Posted

Just go to a theater with reserved seating and enter the room about 10 minutes after the advertised showtime!

But you may have to avoid the trailer elsewhere first; newer rumors are saying the Hobbit is too small; they're eyeing something bigger, and perhaps earlier. Whatever that means.

Regarding the Star Wars spin-offs Badassdigest’s Devin Faraci tweeted this yesterday:

Devin Faraci@devincf Nov 23

The plot of the first STAR WARS spin-off is out there, and I'm curious to see who runs it first.

So, I asked him this:

why don't you run it first? (Honest question)

And his reply was this:

it's not my story.

I responded with:

ok, why not?...and where can I find the plot? I'd like to know it! :)

Today they posted this:

We know there are Star Wars spin-offs coming. We know one is being directed by Gareth Edwards and written by Gary Whitta. Now we may know what it's about. According to Slashfilm the movie will be set in the pre-A New Hope era and will focus on bounty hunters. What will they be doing? Why stealing the Death Star plans.

This is a perfect set-up for a spin-off movie. We've heard a lot about a possible Boba Fett movie - here's that movie, in all likelihood. This premise takes something familiar - the Rebels acquiring the Death Star plans - and turns it on its head. It is set in the most familiar era of the Star Wars saga, and it has room for Darth Vader to appear. It would be totally unique in Star Wars, focusing on a team of bounty hunters instead of straight heroes.

I quite love this idea, and I'm intrigued to find out whether the Rebels hired the bounty hunters or if they ended up buying the plans off them. I kind of like the idea of Boba Fett leading a squad of killers on a mission and ending up with the plans instead of whatever he thought he was heisting.

If this is true, it's fantastic.

Indeed. Sounds like Batman: Assault on Arkham, except with Boba instead of Deadshot and Darth Vader instead of Batman (which is not much of a stretch when you think about it). If it's as good as that movie, this is gonna be sweet. Although, if this is how the rebels got the plans, then what the heck did all those Bothans die for?

You forget - Bothans died acquiring the Death Star II plans. It's not stated how Leia got the plans for the first Death Star that she puts on R2.

There were some cool episodes from the Clone Wars with bounty hunters. If there's going to be a movie involving them, I hope Ventress is in it.

Well... not yet. But Tseebo seems to have a lot of useful empire technology & secrets for the rebels. Plus, Poggle had some DS plans back in Episode III. Not a difficult stretch of the imagination from there, so perhaps we will see some twists & turns.
