Jedi-Bendu Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Ultimate Star Wars Guide from DK coming in May, 320 pages. http://www.starwarsu...ing-in-may.html Yes! An updated version. But if its coming out in May, will they include information about TFA? Almost certain it won't have any Ep7 info. Also, I'm almost certain it will contain a lot of non-canon 'Legends' stuff. Quote
Darth Punk Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 (edited) Almost certain it won't have any Ep7 info. Also, I'm almost certain it will contain a lot of non-canon 'Legends' stuff. I hope there isn't much if any legends. The description I read made no mention of legends, only the movies, clone wars and rebels. Speaking of canon has anyone read Tarkin? I was thinking about getting it but have seen some really mixed reviews. Edited January 10, 2015 by Darth Punk Quote

You're absolutely right. I thought I read (on the net) the book would contain 'Legends' stuff....but I just checked and it's what you say: movies, CW, Rebels and probably just an update of the previous edition. A definite pass for me; I'd rather splash my cash when the Episode VII books are coming this fall (I'd be surprised if the don't release hardcover 'Art' and 'Making of' books, as well as the novel) PS: Haven't read Tarkin. Jedi-Bendu Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 MEGA spoiler (biggest one yet, so beware! I've warned you!) My opinion: I read this 2 days ago....and it's something I was afraid of. It is [censored]. I really hope it isn't true. Maybe it's something they leaked on purpose? Since it's such a huge thing I don't think many people were on set while they were filming Han's death.....so something like this can't possibly leak so easily. First thing that comes to mind is the famous 'No Luke, OBI-WAN is your father' line which was spoken on the set of ESB. Not even Dave Prowse knew the real line.....just Lucas, Kershner, Hamill, JE Jones and a few others. Quote

The future of the Star Wars cinematic galaxy, however, is taking shape. This morning at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, across the street from Lucasfilm, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting where he announced news regarding the first Star Wars stand-alone movie as well as Star Wars: Episode VIII. Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016. In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce. Wait. What? The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016. In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The_Chosen_1 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Absolute INCREDIBLE day for Star Wars news!!!!! Quote
CMP Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) That's crazy...kind of concerned they're producing these so quickly, but I suppose (at least in Rogue One's case) they're for the most part by different teams. I've been watching the OT recently and something occurred to me...we're not going to be hearing the 20th Century Fox theme in the beginning, are we? That's just such a strange thought. As a kid it was more or less synonymous with Star Wars. Edited March 13, 2015 by CallMePie Quote

Khaled Yousef Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 (edited) I fear it might also include the Cinderella Castle of Disney. No seriously I’m scared now; that would suck. Edited March 13, 2015 by Khaled Yousef Quote
Slurpifier Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Two Star Wars films inside half a year may be pretty good, but I think Disney are trying to milk the license a little bit. Sure, anything with 'Star Wars' on it will gaurantee a good bit of profit, and I can see why Disney are pushing out so much Star Wars material in such a short space of time, but I just feel they are going a little overboard. I'm not annoyed at all about it, in fact, I'm happy about the attention Star Wars has got lately, but it is just my general view about what Disney have and are planning to do. Quote
Jedi-Bendu Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Two Star Wars films inside half a year may be pretty good, but I think Disney are trying to milk the license a little bit. Agreed. But: -The movies are made by different teams (which will keep things fresh I think) -I was there in the 80's and 90's.....After I saw ROTJ in the cinema back in 1983 I had to wait 16 (!) years for a new movie. Sure, there were two Ewok movies and 2 cartoon series, but after 1986 there was nothing except the WEG books. After the Zahn novels and Dark Empire there was more and more released, but no new movies until 1999. Is 3 movies in 18 months a lot? I guess so.....but it's better than the dark times (1986-1999). Tariq j Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Great news, I cant Wait to see what Disney do. Quote

As long as the film itself is good, I really don't care what the title cards are. Besides, Disney could always do something really clever like they did for Tron: Legacy: Quote
CMP Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 As long as the film itself is good, I really don't care what the title cards are. Yeah. Same for milking it. If it works, they can do whatever they want. Honestly, even if these films are by some morbid twist of fate worse than the prequels, there is one constant that will keep me watching them, and its name is John Williams. Quote
ToaSalvus(lego) Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I got to be honest, im not too thrilled with Disney handling the star wars universe. Quote
Khaled Yousef Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Can you explain why? I see them as the ones who made it possible for us to see more Star Wars movies in theater, what else could we possibly wish for? I think that the Rebels cartoon is stupid, but that’s because it’s supposed to be a kids show anyway so it had to be superficial for kids to comprehend. I don’t think the movies would follow the same trend; the movies are going to be made by fans for fans, financed by a company that aims to make the most out of the franchise… looks like a win-win situation to me. ToaSalvus(lego) Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 lets just say im not a Disney fan.... Quote
AudiBobaR5-D2 Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Seeing the new Star Wars Universe timeline recently, and I can say, in my personal opinion, that it doesn't look that thrilling. I know that Disney is in control with Star Wars, and I know that they can do whatever they like, but surely that the old (still better in some way I think) Star Wars Universe wasn't all that bad, was it? Especially the period inbetween III and IV, or before TPM, like KoTOR etc, or after VI with the Jedi Knight series. Some might agree, and some might disagree, but with most of that content now out of the window, I'm just not sure that it will excite or inspire as many Star Wars fans of now than before. Quote
Khaled Yousef Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Nothing is out of the window, if you’re talking about the EU it’s all still there for you to enjoy if you wanted to. Who cares what the owner company thinks is canon or not anyway? It’s all an imaginary universe, and you’re free to imagine what you want. Quote

That's what really gets to me, the "nullifying" of a large part of the canon. The Star Wars universe is now a little less richer. Quote
GallardoLU Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 That's what really gets to me, the "nullifying" of a large part of the canon. The Star Wars universe is now a little less richer. it is but it isn't, the bright side of Disney moving star wars forward is that things George Lucas didn't agree with now have a slim (very slim, but still existent) chance of going into full canonization. example, Boba Fett (yes I am a fanboy) George says Boba fell into the pit and that's that, EU said he survived, Disney says he may yet survive we haven't released anything to say either way but we will look to the now "Legends" material for inspiration in upcoming films/books/other. So at this point everything still could be used, or none we just don't really know. what we do know is that Disney wants fans and money from them, there are lots of ways to keep us happy and buying, one of which is to do their best to alter their story to include as much of the old EU as they can, and I expect they will surprise us on that front (in a good way) same goes with events before TPM, its now legends, but still open to be used for future projects. ToaSalvus(lego) Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Like I said before, not a DISNEY fan. Quote
Darth Punk Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 If one cannot be excited about 6 Star Wars movies in 6 years then I would say you aren't much of a fan to begin with. The EU still exists it's just now called Legends. And besides much of it either sucked or contradicted itself. If you have been paying attention Disney is already pulling material out of EU. They have a very long history of staying true to their IPs and ensuring their continued existence. Disney can do what probably no other company would be able to do and that is make Star Wars movies for a very, very long time. There is already talk of a four trilogy. While personally I haven't been a fan of Disney for a long time, from what I see of TFA and Rebels it's obvious they get it. They have a plethora of classic movies because they know If you have something good you don't mess with it. Quote
