Forresto Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 To be fair "Without the Republic Fleet" could mean that with the main part destroyed and the rest dispersed throughout the galaxy there's no New Republic support coming for the Resistance any time soon. It's like the Battle of Wolf 359 from Star Trek TNG. There was a huge fleet near Earth that were the first to respond to the Borg but they were wiped out. However there were still a couple thousand ships spread throughout the Federation that weren't wiped out at the battle. With each ship on on their own doing their own missions, they're not going to be much of a force until they regroup into another fleet which could take a long time considering how spread out they are. Same could be for the New Republic fleet. Even if the New Republic only had a small peace keeping force they would still need to have at least a few thousand starships whether they be frigates, fighters, or capital ships. The Empire according to Wookiepedia had about 20,000 Imperial I- Star Destroyers and probably a similar number of Imperial II- Class Star Destroyers. This is not including the numerous other Imperial ships in service. Even if the NR under Mon Mothma only wanted a fraction of what the Imperial Navy ever had, there's still room for them to have a considerable fleet. Quote
CMP Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Right. My point being if there is any sort of organized fraction of the Republic left, I doubt they would've been of any help to the Resistance. Quote
xboxtravis7992 Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 That does make sense. Even if the New Republic (hypothetically) had 10,000 or so frigates and 20,000 long range fighters that survived Hosnian Prime; it is not like they could regroup really fast. The Resistance was the only group able to respond to the Starkiller base threat because they were organized and ready. And the line from the movie that the New Republic fleet couldn't save them also makes sense in the moment because its not like somebody could order those scattered ships to organize in time to save the Resistance group; far more likely that those scattered ships were rushing to Hosnian Prime to save anybody they could and establish order in the system, rather than thinking about a small militia of political radicals on a far away planet. Still, it would make sense that group would show up in time for Episode 8. (Fingers crossed). Also I am very curious about how "advanced" the T-70 X-Wing is. As an audience it looks more advanced than the classic ship; but I get the impression that the Resistance was poor and strapped for cash so I don't see them spending all their money on a brand new fighter class. It wouldn't surprise me if the T-70 arrived around the end of the Galactic Civil War, and was already mothballed by the time the Force Awakens started, with the last in use ships of the class being those with the Resistance and other cash strapped groups. I say that mostly because it would be strange and interesting to see the New Republic finally showing up, using completely brand new fighters which make the Resistance look really poor in comparison. That's a spot-on inference! In the canon novel Before the Awakening, Poe flies a T-80 X-Wing during his time as a New Republic pilot. The art for the T-80s looks exactly like the T-70, not sure if this is accurate or just a lack of communication with the artist. Quote
xboxtravis7992 Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Yeah I just googled it (T-85 it turns out) and it is weird the art makes it look identical to a T-70. Still that happens a lot in real life. Very few differences mark a F/A-18 from a F/A-18E despite being built years apart. Not much marks a SD20 locomotive from a similarly built early model SD70. So maybe T-85 X-Wing models are supposed to look like T-70's... That would also explain the First Order's use of Tie Fighters... Maybe the Tie Fighter is like a Soyuz spaceship, it survives for years through different political regimes... and they keep making more! Quote
Forresto Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 (edited) So apparently the new A-Wings have Republic like markings under the cockpit. Perhaps the fleet does live on... http://cdn3.spiegel.de/images/image-983622-galleryV9mobile-pres-983622.jpg Edited April 20, 2016 by Forresto Quote
Junior Shark Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Hmmm that circle emblem? I don't think that's the New Republic symbol. The Canon New Republic symbol is just a jazzed-up Alliance Starbird: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/New_Republic That looks more like a neat greebly detail. T-85, not T-80! Classic. Quote
Japanbuilder Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I thought the New Republic was in the midsts of demilitarizing itself (why they would do this I don't know). General Organa had been branded a warmonger and the Resistance was equipped with older or even prototype gear predating the Rebellion (thus the older model X-Wing). But then again maybe Wookiepedia is not the best source for this sort of thing >.> In any case I have seen people in other places online complaining to no end about the lack of "progress" during the 30 years post Jakku and the New Republic. If what Wookiepedia says is true about the state of the New Republic, her policies and the size of the First Order than it seems reasonable to assume the Galactic Civil War was more costly than the films presented with the New Republic so drained of resources as to mothball its service vessels and Imperial Remnant cut off from its previous resource-rich holdings limiting its options in terms of evolution in gear. If so I can accept most of the "progress" to be under-the-hood for a lot of gear seen on the films. Hopefully Episode VIII will bring a bit clarity to the scale of the conflict than EPVII did. However, they justify it I am glad they kept the iconic designs for the good guys and the bad guys. They look great. Quote
Jedi-Bendu Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 My latest interview: https://www.starwarsawakens.nl/interviews/exclusief-interview-nathalie-cuzner-pz-4co/ This time, I asked Nathalie Cuzner (who played PZ-4CO in The Force Awakens) a couple of questions. Quote
Jedi-Bendu Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 Brand new interview I did earlier this month: https://www.starwarsawakens.nl/interviews/exclusief-interview-michael-carter-bib-fortuna/ This time it's Michael Carter, who played Bib Fortuna in Return of the Jedi! Quote
PicnicBasketSam Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 @Japanbuilder: They're not older model X-Wings. The OT X-Wings are T-65 and the TFA X-Wings are T-70. Personally, I'm wondering how the First Order got the money to convert an entire planet into a bigger Death Star... they seem to be a renegade faction with nowhere near the Empire's resources in the movie. They're obviously being bankrolled by Snoke, a reclusive millionaire who dropped out of the public eye after a failed bid for the Old Republic chancellorship. Quote

That's why Snoke hated what the empire's failure; he lost the election to Sheev. Sheev vs Snoke 2016 Quote
PicnicBasketSam Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Well, that explains a lot. Any official source on that? Quote

HawkLord Posted May 4, 2016 Posted May 4, 2016 There's some decent deals on Star Wars merchandise out there. GameStop is running a sale on Infinity figures.
