MagPiesRUs Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 Another superb MOC, Hinckley! The exterior is fanstastic, I love the use of turntable bases and the rebel helmets. I especially like the tall windows on the sides of the building (could we get a better look at those?). The interior is equally great, the designs on the carpet are lovely and the details on the walls are very nice. My one complaint would be that the cinema screen itself looks rather bland, I hope that you'll be adding some curtains to either side (or perhaps, as someone has said, a Whacker and the Walrus decal across the screen ). Overall, great job, your cinema is amazing. Quote
Asuka Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 A most impressive work. That facade´s a real beauty... I almost could see Batman goofing off on the roof somewhere. Quote
samthelegoman1 Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 I love the color of the interior and the floor! Quote
Norrington Posted November 9, 2008 Posted November 9, 2008 And I thought the nogastalic orginal 1950's theatre was charming! This is loverly! This really captures the spirit of Art Deco, and, dare I say it, 1920;'s pulp novels. I want to see more like this! Quote
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Hinkley, I am impressed, very well done. I wouldn't mind having something simular in my town. Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Great MOC, Hinckley! That's a very creative idea how to modify the cinema of the amazing Town Plan set! The only thing I'm not that sure is that the upper part goes with a cinema - imo it would fit much better to a town hall, an office building, a stocl exchange or something like that. Otherwise brilliant architecture upstairs! Very well done! By the way: I designed a little street scenery which includes a cinema, too (not a classic one like yours, but a modern cinema center). I'll show it on EB before Christmas - now it would be the wrong time. Klaus-Dieter Quote
CopMike Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 OMG ! Really nicely built! I love the details on the outside, and the details on the inside and the ......! Nice choice of colors, the outside reminds me of the movie Metropolis by Fritz Lang: Just back from New York I can´t but agree with the Art Deco style being really the most beatiful style to build in. The soda & pop corn desk, the theater itself with it´s colors ....! Well done / Copmike Quote
Hinckley Posted November 11, 2008 Author Posted November 11, 2008 On a side note. I would love to see a building with some graffiti on the side wall. Just like in real life. I don't know why. There's one in the New York section of LEGOland California. You can see it in the Big Book of LEGO... Hinckley, best ever modular mocs ever! It's just so amazing and I am very speechless. I love the entire building design and the color scheme is awesome. The corridor inside the theater with its red carpet is similar to the ones in my countries. Of course, the building design is not grand as yours. This is exactly what a grand theater should look like. I am sure with Cafe Corner, Market Street, Green Grocer, and your very own Art Deco Movie Theater. It just looks amazing. Perhaps, you could name the street after you. Oh, did anyone tell you that someone featured this moc in Classic-Town.net? Thanks WhiteFang! Holy smokes, that's awesome! The SNOT, the detail, the wicked techniques. I love it! Superb job, Hinckley. Onw thing I'm not sure about though is the sand green. Not sure of a replacement though...~Peace Thanks iamded, for the compliments and suggestion. However, I wouldn't change the sand green because I used it for a very specific reason. You see a lot of sand green on the tops of buildings from this era. This is the color copper turns and a lot of buildings were adorned with copper details during the Art Deco era... Finally a place to watch the whacker and the walrus ! You should work for the lego company! I like how you used those fish, are those white helmets for lights and also is there a second story ? That's precisely what I plan to put on the screen! Hink, this is bloody fantastic! I can't tell you how impressed I am. This is great. One of my favourite parts is how you used those huge windows without making it look really <insert that tiresome argument> and basic. Great work! Oh thank you! What a nice compliment. I bought up a ton of those windows and they are hard to use in a detailed environment, that is for sure... I agree with spade450, modification is an understatement. I'd call this a MOC. It's very, very cool, though. But, I can't help but think that it looks more gothic with art-deco inspiration that art-deco. I thought art-deco was more simplistic? I guess you are right! I shall refer to it as that from now on. Thanks! Wow. This is just plain stunning. Any chance of a photo alongside another modular set? Yes, I agree. Yes yes, of course! I will update this topic as soon as I get a chance. Wow! This is really impressive Hinck. I don't think I could ever build something like this. It definately takes a really good and unique builder to create the details that you have captured in this superb creation, esp those in the the upper section and interior of the cinema. I really like the colors of the first floor that look a lot like Lego's official Town Plan combined with different colors used above. The detail is incredible. I esp. like the all well-known concession stand complete with popcorn bricks and soda machine - very nice! Makes me hungry for some popcorn and a good Western. The entire MOC is excellent; and as always, an outstanding creation. Great job! You are created and talented enough to build something like this! And thanks so much for the compliments. This is a really great piece of work. I've never seen these techniques used in such abundance. It takes a while to see all the detail! How long did it take? Did you have all the ideas in your head or did you build as you go, trying new pieces here and there, etc? It took about three months of on and off, trial and error, back and forth. This is the first modular creation I've built where I didn't have a sketch or specific building in mind to model it after. I had the shape in my head and I just added details as I went along. It changed a lot from what I originally envisioned, but I love the result. I pulled inspiration from probably about 20 different pictures of real life buildings... That looks like the front of a truch drove through and got stuck there, but it may just be me. Overall super fantastic job! It does look like that! But, that's what those things kind of look like. I actually really like the ticket booth, but from now on, I'll probably think of it as "the truck." On of my favorite details in this is the spongebob Chum Bucket door-I used it as the door from the lobby to the ticket booth and it looks very authentic. Another superb MOC, Hinckley! The exterior is fanstastic, I love the use of turntable bases and the rebel helmets. I especially like the tall windows on the sides of the building (could we get a better look at those?). The interior is equally great, the designs on the carpet are lovely and the details on the walls are very nice. My one complaint would be that the cinema screen itself looks rather bland, I hope that you'll be adding some curtains to either side (or perhaps, as someone has said, a Whacker and the Walrus decal across the screen ).Overall, great job, your cinema is amazing. Thanks TinyPies! I kind of cropped out the full walls on the sides to hide the weird pattern I ended up with on the first floor after doing the cool pattern in the movie theater. Or did you mean the dark gray bay windows on the sides of the cinema sign? Curtains is a nice idea! I want to add heating ducts-not quite sure why though... Great MOC, Hinckley! Thanks for the nice compliments! I actually know of a quite a few theaters that are this ornate and towering. Theaters from the Art Deco era (like the Chicago theater) had grand lobbies that stood a couple of stories high or more. And a lot of people have responded in this thread that it reminds them of Theaters from their countries/towns. I'm not trying to debunk your opinion. As a matter of fact, I like the idea of going with a town hall next! Thanks OMG !Really nicely built! I love the details on the outside, and the details on the inside and the ......! You can help me bring this to BrickWorld next year! Yay! Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the nice compliments! I actually know of a quite a few theaters that are this ornate and towering. And a lot of people have responded in this thread that it reminds them of Theaters from their countries/towns. I'm not trying to debunk your opinion. As a matter of fact, I like the idea of going with a town hall next! Thanks You're welcome. I must admit that - supposably since I'm form Europe and not very familiar with American architecture - I didn't know that art deco is a real existing architecture style. I thought that the name "Art Deco Movie Theater" was an invention of yourself. So sorry. But nevertheless it's of course a brilliant MOC and I'm very surprised how your town hall then will look like! Lord Santos Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) I wish I had a big wallet to build big MOCs. Hinckley, have you already taken apart the cinema or is it still standing? Edited November 12, 2008 by Lord Santos Quote
Omega 8 Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I pretty much effin' love it. The seating area is genius. Quote
DJ Force Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Dammit. Everytime I click on a thread started by Hinck, it turns out to be the best MOC ever. EVERY FRIGGIN TIME! Quote
Still Raindrop Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 You know, Hinckley, I have long thought that Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" would be an amazing inspiration for a LEGO city, but wondered if the Art Deco look could successfully be pulled off. I don't wonder any more--your theatre's design is flawless! Quote
united brick Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 great revamp neds more color though Quote
hollisbrick Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 WOW That is quite amazing The greatest movie theatre Moc I have ever ever seen Great work and keep up the awsome work!!! Quote
Infomaniac Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I like the use of rebel headgear as lights "Impressive, most impressive" - Darth Vader Infomaniac Quote
Capn Frank Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 That's beautiful Hinckley I really like it. I was hoping to do something like this for when i get the theater, but it definitely wasn't going to be that elaborate or cool looking. Quote
Bartram Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 Wow! Simply stunning. Very detailed and great use of the grey bits. Quote
NewRight Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 Great use and integration of some TLG designs from Town Plan. Quote
djo Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 great creation. i love the art deco design. nice interior too. TLC should make this as official set. Quote
simonwillems Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I seemed to have missed this thread, but I saw the MOC on Brickshelf some time ago and was amazed to find out that you had not yet opened a thread on it.... The building is absolutely stunning! I love the colorscheme, the little details like the fish, the helmets for lights, the carpet inside with different shades of red: beautiful. I must admit that - supposably since I'm form Europe and not very familiar with American architecture - I didn't know that art deco is a real existing architecture style. Klaus-Dieter I am from Europe too and there really are some examples of architecture like this on this continent, like the Tuschinski Theater in Amsterdam, take a look: Your MOC reminded me instantly of this particular theatre, Hinckley(39?) Quote
KDog Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 That's epic. And very Gotham City. I think that's where Bruce Wayne and his parents went on that fateful night! Quote
AgentRick Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 Well if it was, then Hinckley would have to change the sign to say "The Mask of Zorro" (one of the few Batman facts I know) Quote
Hinckley Posted December 15, 2008 Author Posted December 15, 2008 Thanks everyone for the great responses to my MOC. Here are some more shots that were requested: Shots of the Theater with my other Modular MOCs. I have altered the top of the theater and still plan to put a roof on it and some more details inside. More detailed shots of the windows and the sides: More closeups of the architectural details: Quote
DJ Force Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Truly a masterpiece! I´m missing the bodies in front of the building next to it, though Or did the rats finally eat them completely? Quote
