Zelda: Wind Waker

I found this model of the King of Red Lions (from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker) quite a while ago:

I'd like to build a version of this as a Christmas present for a few people I know (with LEGO-style instruction manual and box art of course) and reckon I can work most of it out, but was just wondering if anyone knew which LEGO piece Link's hat is? You can see it from the back in this picture:

I've always liked this model. If you do make instructions, would you consider sharing them here? As well as pics of your box art efforts. It would make an interesting thread, I think. I actually tried to convert this moc to mlcad once, but either got distracted by something or stuck, I can't remember which.

It's a heated and warped something else. What that something else is, I can't be sure, but it could be anything from a green cap to a rag wrap. The wrap is the most likely to be easily converted, and fortunately, it is going to pop up in green in the cheapest of the new Pirate sets, so it'll be an easy part to get, just not yet. Until then, you could experiment with green caps.

Otherwise, someone sculpted it themselves. It's possible, assuming they make green sculpy, but it looks too smooth to me, I'm betting on a heat and warp job.

Yep, whenever I make a model in Bricksmith I always put the LDraw file online at the very least but I'll leave posting the instructions and box until after Christmas as I want it to be a surprise for those I intend on giving it to.

I guess I'll have to try getting ahold of that tiny pirate set somehow before Christmas, as otherwise the green caps cost upwards of $14... But said new cap is a much darker shade of green... That's a possibility... I was originally going to use a regular smiley face, but might give this anime-style face instead, as it will more closely resemble the Wind Waker Link. So either that hair you mentioned, or posibly this Forestmen cap in green?

I just moved into a new apartment and so all my LEGO is packed away, waiting for me to get many teeny-tiny drawers for the walls of my LEGO-office, in order that I might sort it all out... So this will be the first model I build entirely in Bricksmith first, no sketch-models even, so I shall totally post the LDraw file sooner rather than later.

PS - I just found this version of Link, using the hairpiece mentioned:

It looks a little too detailed, I think Skywalker hair may look more cute.

PPS - Holy crap, I'm tempted to get the $14 hat as this looks perfect:

And this head with white hair works much better than the anime face as he actually looks happy and not creepy.

You're doing the older Link, and for that I reckon your efforts are pretty good, especially as you're making your own hat, where I'm just going to use the green rag. And yep, I reckon I shall buy Skywalker hairs for Christmas and then post people the green pirate rags in the new year.

You might want to try getting a few Farmer's Cowls:

Thy certainly have the trademark Link hat dangle-down-the-back-ability. A bit of modding and a fresh coat of paint could to wonders.

Or alternatively, you could grab a few inexpensive head rags and spray paint those.

Just a few suggestions mind you.

Link's hat is actually a Ninja headpiece chopped and sanded down. I had planned on making alot of other Wind Waker related stuff but I never got round to it.

If it would help, I could take some pics of it partially assembled.

Photos of the model partially assembled would be powerfully appreciated, thanks! And I was wondering about the mast; does it have a tube or the like through the middle, to make it stronger?

Yes we do! I'd say welcome to EB based on your 5 posts, but you've been here a lot longer than I have.

You did a very nice job on these, maybe you could post more often and share other creations, especially anything else Zelda or game related, I suspect the would be a lot of interest in that.

I had planned on making alot of other Wind Waker related stuff but I never got round to it.

What did you have in mind? Maybe someone else would pick up the project if they had a few ideas.
