Athos Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Looks like we're getting a new castle wall piece: Not sure how I feel about this yet. Steve Quote
Guss Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 (edited) personally I think they're nice , better than the old one, with their weird shape ^^ and I think that these parts already exists without the hole on it, am I wrong ? Edited November 12, 2008 by Guss Quote

I haven't seen one. I only know of the six long ones like you mention. Steve Quote

There is a 1 x 3 x 5, and a 1 x 6 x 5, but I don't think there is a 1 x 4 x 5. Quote
brickzone Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 The absence of corner cutouts will affect the sturdiness of any construction that uses these new wall panels. However, the old walls can be awkward due to the ledge and being 5 wide, so I am happy that we'll have the versatility of these new pieces (presumably we'll see them in black and bley in new Castle in due course). Quote
Wout Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I hope they will not stop producing the old castle walls, because I like their sturdyness, but it could be a nice addition. Quote
Zarkan Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I think this new piece is great, as it looks a lot easier to incorporate into standard constructions. Let's hope we get it in grey with the castle sets coming out next year - maybe in a UCS castle? Quote
Cardinal Brick Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I agree with what's already been said on the sturdyness issue, it would have been better to alter the old piece. However I'll wait and see how it plays out when I get some. Quote
Sir Dillon Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I think I like this new piece. The older piece could be more secure, but the odd width made it a bit awkward to use, for me at least. This new piece is short enough that I'd most likely be putting bricks above and below it, which should keep sturdy enough. Quote
Fluyt Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 Way better than the old one, only downside is the sturdyness. But it is smaller, has a regular shape (and not an awkward part on top and bottom that doesn't fit in with the thickness of the wall) and is more versatile/usefull. Quote
blueandwhite Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I'll always be a fan of brick-built walls so this piece doesn't really interest me all that much. I can definitely understand the price advantages in these sorts of pieces, but I've never liked the paper-thin appearance of wall pieces. I suppose that this piece is probably easier to work though. I Scream Clone Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I think I like this new piece. The older piece could be more secure, but the odd width made it a bit awkward to use, for me at least. This new piece is short enough that I'd most likely be putting bricks above and below it, which should keep sturdy enough. I couldn't have said it better. With a six or eight long brick above and below it should be fairly stable though. I dislike the old one only for being 5 wide, all its anchor points are the real benefit. Quote
Norro Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I am not a fan of pre fab lego, and really won't be using many pieces which are only available in bley, so this doesn't hold much for me. The even width will be good for younger builders, but against this I attribute many of my earlier building designs to accomodating the old odd widths. They were also much more convienient to overlap (and produce even angled walls...) God Bless, Nathan Quote

Dadster Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I think they're fine. I certainly don't have them in front of me yet to determine the feel and stability of them, but I never liked the 3 stud length. Looks like we're getting a new castle wall piece: Not sure how I feel about this yet. Steve You gotta use your hands... Quote
The Rancor Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I love this new window piece. It'll be much easier to make buildings with a square shaped window block instead of a window which has a 3 stud part on bottom and on top with gaps on the sides making a width of 5 studs (AS mentioned already!). I suppose one downside is that there was a neat inside part on the old wall making it easy to build rooves Quote
UsernameMDM Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 I've never really had a problem building with the 1x5x6 piece. I would use both the old and new pieces though. Quote
natelite Posted November 13, 2008 Posted November 13, 2008 i am not too happy with the trend of going blocky. been seeing lots more of these big blocks which used to be made up of smaller bricks. i suppose it saves those big moc'ers time when creating long repetitious walls but the downside is that we're going to be seeing lots more "<insert that tiresome argument>" huge sets. while i like better scaled sets, i am already running out of space for my lego sets...and having more <insert that tiresome argument> huge sets do not help. i like TLC to return to making smaller but more detailed sets. especially for S@H sets meant for AFOL collectors. while i do like the latest medieval village, i find that it's not as detailed as GG or CC. the accessories, animals, printed tiles, mfs all helped raise it's value and is definitely a must have purchase just for that turkey alone but the buildings are mediocre compared to GG or CC imo. as an example, i like the classic guarded inn set. it's small (about $20-30?) but is detailed for its price and fit in just nicely without overbearing the rest of my castle sets. the MV in contrast will need a castle the size of a large room (20'x 20') just for it to fit in. sorry but i just dont have that kind of space. timbutnice Posted November 14, 2008 Posted November 14, 2008 Thanks for the pics, I'd missed the new piece... I'm with the brick-built is better faction. Not that I don't use castle wall pieces (I like them!), but I'd rather have their equivalent in actual bricks instead. The new peice is interesting, and for me one of the best things about Lego is the huge variety of different shapes and sizes it comes in, and the way their geometry allows you to fit them together in new and often surpising ways, so any new piece is to be welcomed. I'd still prefer bricks though (ok stop now as going into repeat mode...) cheers, timbutnice Quote
DaleDVM Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 (edited) I am somewhat confused by people calling this type of piece <insert that tiresome argument> or blocky and in the next breath praising old classic castle sets that were chuck full of wall pieces. I think many people have glorified the old sets in their minds eye. Go back and rebuild some of those classics that you love and then build the Kings castle siege. The new sets have more brick not less than the old. I also like to use brick instead of POOPs. However, I think TLC should be given credit where it is due. The new sets are easily as detailed and as good as the older sets. Now back on topic. The new piece will be stable enough. It is only 5 high and 4 wide. Being smaller it will be much easier to add brick around and even in front of this piece to disguise it. This will make it much more versatile. I find it to be a vast improvement on the old castle wall piece. The biggest difference will be the lack of the rearward protrusion. This "shelf" while sometimes useful was also difficult to hide when doing interiors to your buildings. I am looking forward to this in grey, brown, and black. Captain Zuloo Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I think it's heaps better than the old one in that it is 4 studs wide and the older 5 studs wide was a pain in the a** to work with. But for some reason, I really like the old castle walls. Quote
Siegfried Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I prefer the new type; the old was stronger but it's usage was limited due to the lip. (I'm a bit confused as to why this topic is in History & Adventure; wouldn't "Pirates" for the short term, and "News and General Discussion" in the long term make more sense? Thus I'm moving this to Pirates until the part appears in a Castle set. Otherwise someone might miss this and create another topic... ) Quote

legotrainfan Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 The problem with the old castle walls has been that they have an uneven number of studs (5 studs in length), which makes it difficult to build something with them. But they are very useful to make a construction sturdy. I hope that they won't discontinue the old caslte walls so that we will have two types of castle walls. Quote
Razzer Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I have not problem with this new piece, as it's much easier to place into MOCs, the main issue I have is TLC cheapin' out and making the 1x6x6 wall section that this is based on hollow, although it works with the window in, so that's probably why they did it...
