CP5670 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 The names sound interesting enough, but it's hard to say anything about these sets until we have some pictures. Quote
Algernon Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I'm excited by this, of course. The idea of a Space Police/Patrol force chasing down different bad guys in different settings reminds me of Agents in a good way. These sets could be Space with more personality. Can't wait. And I must know who this mysterious Squidman is. I'm picturing a minifig with an octopus on its head, lol. Agree 100%. Also, I'm picturing Davy Jones. Quote

Captain Zuloo Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) (from an Australian retailers catalog) I wouldn't trust those Aussies. I was just swooshing my Galactic Mediator around naked. Akward... Not being a space fan, I think this is pretty good news. My only grip is that the new space ships will probably be constructed out of those huge pieces. Algernon Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Safe to say Blacktron won't be in Space Patrol, then. Quote
Algernon Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Or realistic. Things like Squidman escape and Freeze Ray Frenzy make me think that Blacktron is a thing of the past, especially since in that description they used a past-tense mention of Blacktron. Quote
Pickerel Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Or realistic. Things like Squidman escape and Freeze Ray Frenzy make me think that Blacktron is a thing of the past, especially since in that description they used a past-tense mention of Blacktron. Well there is the possibility that we'll see them in a space-prison or a set featuring them break out from jail. I don't think Blacktron would be mentioned in a product description if it wasn't in the product. Quote
Algernon Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I think it's pretty obvious that these descriptions aren't official. Call me a pessimist, but at this point I think it's really unlikely, and frankly I always doubted it. Quote

Call me a pessimist, but at this point I think it's really unlikely, and frankly I always doubted it. Pessimist! It's obvious thse descriptions aren't the ones we'll see in a catalog, sure, but they probably have at least some accuracy. Why would they mention Blacktron if it wasn't going to be in a line? It could just be the website's trying to appeal to former Blacktron fans, though. I think it's pretty obvious that you can't handle the truth. Pencoin, that was unnecessary, it doesn't help your point of view one bit. Algernon was merely stating his opinion about a theme, all of which is preliminary! There's no actual proof this line will exist, let alone a subfaction, and you're saying Algernon can't handle the truth? That's a good way to cause a fight or get in trouble! Please post maturely and intelligently! Quote
snefroe Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 g, people... calm down... yes, i'm concerned with Blacktron's legacy too, but as long as we don't have pictures or some more detailed info, it's not worth getting nasty over it... Quote

Why would they mention Blacktron if it wasn't going to be in a line? It could just be the website's trying to appeal to former Blacktron fans, though. I suppose that's true... but still, it made it sound like Blacktron was defeated, which kind of seems like a way to set the stage for new villains. Sounds more like a backstory than a set description, especially if you look at the context. Also, if Blacktron was a major player in these sets, you'd think we'd have at least SOME mention of them in the names... I think it's much more likely we'll just get totally random alien badguys, like Agents. I actually prefer this. Blacktron would work better as it's own theme, not a subfaction, and I'm always up for new alien minifigs. Quote
Pencoin Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I'm going to love the part where I get to say 'told you so'. TLC is alot different from years ago. Quote

KDog Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Yeah, it would be weird for Blacktron to be mentioned and then not included in the sets. It does make them sound past tense, but I'm hoping that just means that perhaps they'll already be in the Space Patrol modular prison cells. :-D The fact that we could be seeing new Space Police and Blacktron has me beyond excited. Bring on some pictures! Quote
Algernon Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I hope we get modular prison cells... I wouldn't put it beyond LEGO to leave them out. Quote
danth Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) I remain cautiously optimistic. I have a feeling, with names like "squidman," this theme is gonna be pretty campy. Kinda like a continuation Star Justice and the Space Skulls. That could either totally kill or totally bomb, depending on how they pull it off. The idea of a Star Justice type set without stickers and without the piece limitations of pick-a-brick has me very excited, however. Things I hope to see: Air tanks The Space logo A cool color theme (no orange!) Things I don't want to see: Pearled plastic Stickers spring-loaded or pneumatic anything Edited November 16, 2008 by danth Quote
Zarkan Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 This is great news! I knew that Space wasn't totally out of the running yet, and I'm glad to see more info relating to the theme. I sure hope Blacktron's back! Things I don't want to see:Pearled plastic Stickers spring-loaded or pneumatic anything Heh, I'm afraid you'll probably luck out on all three of those. Quote
Algernon Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) There'll definitely be stickers and probably some kind for shooting function on all the sets, but Mars Mission sort of subdued me to that fact and now I'm more concerned with the quality of the construction and design. Yes, about the color scheme, after Power Miners I'm a little nervous about that. Space Police II had such an awesome color scheme, I'd really like to see Space Patrol follow suit... but I don't have my hopes too high. "Cautiously optimistic" is a very good way to put it, danth. The set names sound intriguing, but the low piece count has me nervous and after the huge disappointment of Power Miners, I'm not gonna get my hopes up too high. No matter how these turn out, though, I will definitely buy the Galactic Enforcer, as any true Space fan should. Edited November 16, 2008 by Algernon Quote
Pencoin Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 If there is any crap-tastic launchers, I'll mod them out. Some launchers can be good though (looks at Pirates). I'll out the stickers on because I will like the designs. Quote
CP5670 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) Even if the new bad guys are called Blacktron, that doesn't necessarily mean they will have anything in common with the old Blacktron themes. TLG has reused names like this before with no other connection; look at Aquaraiders for example. As I said before, you can't really say anything good or bad about these sets at all until we have some pictures. Edited November 16, 2008 by CP5670 Quote
brickzone Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) Personally I'll be entirely happy if it is like "Agents in Space" - a bit of flair would be nice after the dull Mars Mission etc. Besides, it's more fun for kids. I think we should expect such a thing. After all, Blacktron and Space Police were kind of cartoon stereotypes even in their original guise. A modern rendition will surely have some aspects of "camp"-ness about it. The set names sound like the concepts will be pretty fun, I just hope the set execution is good, and has a nice blend of large parts (e.g. plates, hull parts), brick/slope and small parts. Mars Mission had some good aspects in this regard, but still had much design that was too "fussy" and using awkward custom parts. An example of a nice streamlined "swooshable" vehicle in recent times is the Lego Agents jet fighter from the Gold Chase set. It has a simple arrangement of plates, hull/wedges, brick and slope with some SNOT to acheive a nice effect with almost no truly "specialised" parts - two fin parts are about the height of it, the rest are generic apart from using a barrel for an exhaust.
