simonjedi Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I think it is because we couldn't "relate" to most of the sets.Last year had iconic and memorable vehicles, but this wave didn't really have any of them. The BP had ships that were completely new, the games/show that the Jedi Starfighter and the Rouge Shadow appeared in wasn't out for another 7 months and the AT-PT had about 5 minutes of screen time. The hailfire droid was the most familiar vehicle released. The second wave was better, the fighter tank, spider droid and V-19 have been on screen since 2002. The gunship and AT-TE are redesigns of well known vehicles. Most thought the Twilight would only appear in the movie, and has a poor selection of figures, Magnaguard fighters were a film only creation (for now anyway). and the droid gunship is another 5 minutes of screen time figure. KyoKyo Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) I've been away from Star Wars legos for years until i saw the new V19 and since then, ive bought the MTT, AT-TE, Hailfire Droid set, the Seperatist Spider Droid and my favorite, the Republic Fighter Tank (FINALLY lego released it ) For someone who has been out of Legos for years, these new sets are really exciting for me. I could see how for the OT fans and old lego veterans this year could be dull, but i love the bright, bold colors of the new sets and the makeovers! Did I mention i love the Fighter Tank? Anyway, i hope 2009 is just as good. Otherwise, I'll spend my Christmas money on my Lizardmen Army for Warhammer Edited December 6, 2008 by KyoKyo Quote
JimBee Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Red and white are awesome colours for an army. And not that they aren't. I just liked the uniqueness of every ship from the earlier years. The main thing that bothers me is that the style keeps changing, not only with the clones (Ep. 2 to CW to Ep. 3 tp OT....), but with the ships too. Ah, well, they all look good on display, which is a big factor for buying/ liking for me. Even so, hopefully we'll see some old SW vehicles/ locations in the future (Gungan sub, Home One, Geonosis Arena, etc.). Quote

I agree with you JimButcher, I also think the uniqueness is an important factor of the SW saga and in my opinion this new line has any of it . That maybe why I like the last year so much, cause the last year had very different vehicles of different eras and not just an army themed wave. The next year in contrast sounds very good with a perfect variety. Quote
ROCON Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I actually think 2008 was one of the best years Lego's had. Not to brag, but we got the entire CW collection except the overpriced v-19 with only one mini. Quote
Eskallon Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I like this year's sets but also think we could have done with a few PT and a few OT. This was still a good year though but could be much better. Hopefully 2009 will not be just about the clone wars. Quote
TheBrickHitHouse Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Cant believe people could complain about '08! We got sooo many sets and nothing for the OT fan.....er....the Death Star?!? At 3000 bricks its the equiv of an entire line! I dont like the new Clone Wars show - but I love the vehicles, from a design point of view the new sets are damn near masterpieces - how I wish I could make MOC's as accurate and including such advanced building techniques! '08 Lego werent toys they were pieces of art Quote
iotacode Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I like the 08 sets, they're the ones that pulled me back into SW Lego/generally all Lego which I had stopped 3 years back. Quote
MaxGoof Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I actually love the Clone Wars cartoons, but I'm not digging the Legos so much (yet). I will buy the Torrent, but outside of that and perhaps one of the CW-era Y-Wings, I don't know that I've seen any ships in the show yet that I need to have. I did buy the Imperial Star Destroyer, MTT, and Sandcrawler this year, however, so I'd say it's been quite an awesome year for me. Quote
MicroM Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I really like the line up in 2008. The Clone Wars kits are really good. The Gunship is a kit we all wanted re-done, and LEGO did a great job with it. Every kit I have bought I have really enjoyed building. The kits all seem to have quite neat little functions, like the V-19's wings, Death Star's various rooms, even the HSD (after I built one of those I went out and got 2 more - it was just a good looking kit). The Clonetrooper minifigs are really good. I dont mind the cartoony faces, and now that I'm watching the TV series (its finally on in Australia) I have got even more into the line. I think I've got to get The Twilight now. The Death Star is an awesome kit, I would never have thought LEGO would have done something like that, with so many minifigs. The battle packs with Stormies and Rebel Troopers were great. It has been a year of change with LEGO now having a new line, Clone Wars, to focus on and that's what has made this year feel different. But I am embracing the cartoon series and I actually enjoy it, and I think the LEGO has been done really well. And probably one other measure of how good I've thought the year is......how much poorer am I ? and the answer is a fair bit. Quote
General Magma Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) The Clone Wars sets are awesome! The only reason for those big eyes is because of the new Clone Wars movie and TV series, the Clone Wars sets are from there and in there the characters are a kind of anime-looking.. But I would like to see some more Prequel Trilogy and Original Trilogy sets..this year we only got an expensive Death Star, which I'm not going to buy.. Yes you get 24 minifigs but how many minifigs could you get from sets with that $400 (buying many sets, for example impulses)? Maybe 150 ? Still the Death Star is great, but way too overpriced..I heard it went up for like $100! Edited December 6, 2008 by General Magma Quote
Oky Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 2008 disappointing? Are you kidding me? The Clone Wars sets are excellent, despite the lack of clones and interior. And the DS is undoubtedly one of the greatest gifts from TLC to SW-loving AFOLs ever. So, anyone complaining about there not being enough OT sets this year should be ashamed. Saying that the CW line is boring because of the colors is also ridiculous. Isn't a unified look the whole point of a military faction? And you can't blame TLC for the general design of the ships either; if anything, that's George Lucas' fault. I really like all of the designs, except the Twilight. They are all very well made models of what they are supposed to be. The only thing that really bothers me about this year's line-up is that it's so darn pricey! I really hope this doesn't get any worse and that rumors of next year's BPs being over $10 are not true, because my wallet can't take much more of this! However, I do miss the opportunity to get main characters in smaller sets. The only set that allows you that at the moment is Anakin's JSF, but you only get Anakin with that one. Next year, there will be Ahsoka's JSF, but that one will be around 20-30 bucks as well and will only have Ahsoka and some exclusive droids. I mean, what ever happened to such neat little "Duel" sets like 7101? Oh well. Quote

I agree, I think 2008 was really nice. (and Im a OT fan).. And I totally agree about missing smaller set.. I would love really small sets like this but for Star wars.. 1 minifig and some cool thing, not a ship but someting else from the Star wars universe Like a Tie fighter tech with a small utility vehicle or a smaller set like this Imagine, a rebel technician and a X wing utility thingie , Aunt Beru and a stowe with some banta meat cooking. A Stormie and a weapons rack.. I love that kind of smaller sets.. lets cross our fingers and hope that dreams may come true 2009, or 2010 :-) Edited December 6, 2008 by a53021 Quote

I mean, what ever happened to such neat little "Duel" sets like 7101? Oh well. Well I really like the new line but for some reason all of them feel very alike. Let´s take apart the color issue but why the TLC don´t release some more variety of ships of different eras so all the line will have diversity. Also, the minifgs in the small sets are really kind of boring. You only get real minifigs in the bigger sets which I don´t own and all of the small ones just get clones and droids. I need to admit the clones are very cool maybe my favorites of all the SW theme but own theme in each set kinda annoys me . The DS is simply one of the best sets in the history but I can´t afford it like many other AFOLs but maybe just maybe I get it for christmas but again I need to get the cheaper bigger sets first which are the AT-TE, RGS and the Twilight but maybe I will wait a few months when they go in clearence. Comparing this year with the last one I think the last one is far better in terms of everything. Price, minifigs, set, diversity, etc. Quote
The Kid Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 The January sets were disappointing (apart from the BPs), but the CW sets were pretty good - the RGS was excellent. The Death Star is brilliant, but too expensive - the main disappointment this year was how expensive the sets were compared to, say, the '06 sets. Still, I guess that's inflation for you TK Quote

Still, I guess that's inflation for you The Death Star is now £270 instead of £300 thanks to decreased VAT, incase anyone wanted one with a £30 reduction. I don't think this year's sets were disappointing. My only gripe is that there should have been some CHEAP sets in the Summer!!! Quote
JimBee Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 However, I do miss the opportunity to get main characters in smaller sets. Don't say that! I hate having tons of Obi Wans and Anakins! What we need are more minor characters in small sets, like Kit Fisto and Plo Koon. I'm not too worried about clones because of the BP, but more pilots would be nice. This is mostly because of kids wanting main characters, though, as someone told me before. Quote
Bricklanta Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I think it was because the prices went up a bit on the RGS and AT-TE and we didn't get that many figs(clones). Quote

My only gripe is that there should have been some CHEAP sets in the Summer!!! Actually, the original price was £274.99, so it's only been reduced by £5 or so - it's only 2.5% less VAT, so not a big great reduction! TK Quote

The Kid Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 Really? I thought it was first put up on pre-order for £199.99 for a couple of months, then TLC realised their mistake and set it at the proper price of £274.99. I don't ever remember it being £300, and if it were the reduced VAT would only mean a new price of around £293 or so... TK Quote
NickEarth1 Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I'm fine with the sets themselves. I even got some of them The problem though, was the price. Quote
KimT Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 The price is always an issue. If this topic turns into another rant on LEGO prices, I'll shut it down instantly. Consider yourself warned. For discussions on pricing, I suggest going to the LEGO News & General Discussions forum or the Ambassadors' forum. Stay on target. Quote
Wout Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 I found 2008 not that bad. Battlepacks were great, design of the imperial battlepack flyer was not that good, but nice enough. Hailfiredroid with dwarf spiderdroid quite nice Anakins Jedi starfighter quite good the thing with three legs was not very attractive to me. the black spaceship was not that bad, but I would only want the figs. the magnaguard fighter not that good the V-19 quite good the At Te quite good the Rep. Gunship very good the droid gunship was nice the republic tank was nice the big spaceship which looks like a b wing was not that bad the big spiderdroid was nice the big minifig deathstar was nice (the last 5 sets are specials and not in most shops available, and that was more dissapointing for me) Quote
darkrebellion Posted December 8, 2008 Author Posted December 8, 2008 (edited) Well here are my thoughs on every set so I can express better my opinion on each one: Battlepacks: Very good, both battlepacks have nice designs but for some reason I really like the design of the dropship. The minifigs are superb especially the new Rebel Troopers. Hailfire droid and spider droid: Another superb set. Even if many people feel the hailfire droid is very small I think is perfect cause it is supposed to be a small set. The minifigs are quite cool. Anakin starfighter: My favorite fighter to date. The design is pretty strong and the minifigs are cool. AT-AP: For some reason I love this walker. The design looks A LOT better in person and the overall size is perfect. The minifigs are cool but I would prefer two scout troopers. Rogue Shadow: This set is my favorite of the first wave. The design is extremely strong and the ship is cool anyway. The minifigs are GREAT all of them are awesome, I especially like the Starkiller minifig. Magnaguard starfighter: Very solid design and the actual ship is very cool but somewhat looks a bit boring. The minifgs are cool but not great I don´t like it very much . V-19 Torrent: Amazing design , one of the best I have seen and it actually WORKS not like the flick-fire missiles . The ship is cool but in the landing mode it doesn´t looks thats cool. The minifig is great but owning just clones is somewhat dissapointment . AT-TE: I don´t own it so I can´t comment much on it but for what I have seen is pretty cool. The lack of interior is an important issue so this just feels somewhat wrong cause nowadays the TLC put many details in the interior. The minifigs are cool but anything really special apart from Rex and Ashoka. Republic Attack Gunship: I actually don´t own this too so I can´t make a huge judge about it. Actually I don´t see any flaw on it and the minifigs are excellent with some exclusive ones and Plo Koon . The only thing that is extremely wrong with it is the expensive price. Droid Gunship: Excellent small set. The price is pretty fair and the design pretty flaw-less. The minifgs in the other hand are boring I would prefer a true droid pilot. Republic Fighter Tank: I own this set but I havent build it yet. It looks very promising but the minifigs are boring why they don´t put an special minifig with it . Twilight: Many people complain about this one but in my eyes is pretty acceptable and the design is good. The lack of interior is a big con and if the TLC have put the droid that Ahsoka cutted the head of in the movie this will be a big seller. Separatist Spider Droid: Good small set but the design is simply wrong and bad developed. The minifigs are nice but nothing that excites me very much. Death Star: AWESOME!!!!!, that is going to be my only word. So here are all my comments an why each sets done for me. Edited December 8, 2008 by darkrebellion Quote
