Batbrick Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 What does everyone think of the new Batman show? Personally I love it, a perfect translation of the fun Dick Sprang and Silver Age times of Batman. Plus I love that through a popular character (Batman) the creators are giving those who don't know a lot about the DC universe a tour through its lesser known characters (Blue Beetle, Red Tornado, Etrigan etc). I love the witty atmosphere too, I laughed at loud at several points in each episode. Thoughts? Quote
M'Kyuun Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I've seen a couple eps now, and the overall tone is more whimsical/lighthearted than the previous series. It's not a bad show, although i much prefer a darker take on Batman. B:TAS and JL capture his personality best for me. Kevin Conroy really nailed the part and gave the character some grit. Introducing a lot of obscure characters can be good and bad: good for variety in the show and on the toy shelves; bad because kids may not identify with characters who are introduced in an episode, and never again explored. Characterization and story plays a surprisingly large role in selling toys, as evidenced by the original Transformers back in the 80's: TF started out as several different toy lines in Japan, but none of them had strong stories and the toy lines failed. Hasbro bought the licenses, crafted a decent story, gave the characters endearing personalities, and the rest is history. On the same note, I think JL:Unlimited didn't do as well as JL b/c of all the new characters...it's what turned me off to it, so I speak from personal experience. I thought JL was an amazing show; there was a surprising amount of maturity in the writing at times that is rare in American animation. If the Brave and Bold writers create an overarching storyline and pepper it with various character appearances, I think it will do better than if it becomes the new-character-introduced-every-episode type of show. My $.02 However, for you, sir, I'm glad you like the show and I hope it builds a fanbase; it'll put some variety into the franchise, and Batman is a character that should endure. Quote
AgentRick Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I love it! I can't wait for the episode with Guy Gardner to show up! Quote
Oky Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 (edited) Meh, it's alright. Pretty campy atmosphere and nice Ben10-style animation, but not exactly my favorite cartoon out there right now (which would be The Clone Wars ). Batman's sarcastic thoughts about his partners are always very funny! Its "educational value" (to learn about other DC characters) is partly what makes me keep watching this show. However, most of the heroes Batsy teams up with end up looking like fruitcakes next to the Caped Crusader. Batman himself is portrait quite well; better than I expected him to be at least. And he has some pretty kickass vehicles and gadgets in this show! Gotta love that seek, amphibious BatWing! Maybe I'll make a MOC of that puppy some day. It's fun, though, and I'll enjoy watching it (along with the Secret Saturdays) as sort of an appetizer to my beloved Clone Wars every Friday night! Edited December 10, 2008 by Oky Wan Kenobi Quote
Lt. Col. Thok Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I like it - It's pretty funny, and the villains are a bit different. I disagree with Green Arrow's design; Where's his beard? Quote
trooperdavinfelth Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I haven't seen any full episodes yet. It's OK, but there should be more focus on Batman and less of a 'hundreds of superheroes protect the world but if one goes down only Batman can stop the enemy' feel. I'd rather see more intrigue and more plot rather than 'WE GOTTA STOP THE BIG BAD GUY' and attempts at humor stricken throughout the show. Maybe my sense of humor isn't yours but it's not the good old Animated Series. Quote
Zarkan Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 All I know is I probably won't be able to see a full episode until they release DVDs, as I don't get Cartoon Network. Still, the show seems to be getting good reviews online. One of the best points seems to be that the show knows exactly what it wants to do (campy 60's era batman style), whereas the previous show, The Batman (which I really enjoyed), had sort of an identity crisis, leaping from simplistic action heavy shows to darker and more serious storylines. Anyway, I just hope that this show is able to put some character into episodes instead of just doing a "teamup and villian of the week with a moral lesson" route. Also, every previous batman show has had multiple appearances of nearly every character they introduce, so I hope they bring back characters frequently. Still, you can't go wrong with camp batman, can you? Quote
Batbrick Posted February 20, 2009 Author Posted February 20, 2009 Sorry for the bump, but a lot of eps have passed and this is quickly on its way to surpassing (wait for it) BTAS as my favourite DC show ever! Seriously guys, watch the eps on youtube if you have to *cough*account BlueBeetle43*cough* And now just for hype, an upcoming episode preview has come out, here's the synopsis: Batman swaps places with Owlman -- his criminal counterpart in an alternate Universe -- to stop the Crime Syndicate from taking over the world. He must team up with the hero Red Hood (who famously becomes the Joker in the real universe) to stop them! Check it out: And the Part 2 synopsis: Meanwhile back on Earth, Owlman has been perpetrating crimes disguised as Batman and assembled all the villains to join him. When Batman returns, he finds himself on the wrong side of the law and hunted by Green Lantern, Aquaman, Blue Beetle, Red Tornado and Plastic Man. It Quote

Oky Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Ah, thanks for reviving this thread, Batbrick! I was going to do it at some point, but I guess you beat me to it. My friend who is a die-hard Batfan like you loves this show as much as you, so we both sit down to watch this along with the Clone Wars every Friday night, and I must say that I find myself liking this show a lot too! It's still a little too campy for me, and BTAS will remain the best DC show of all time for me, but this one definitely has its moments! My favorite episodes so far are the ones where Batsy is transformed into an actual Dark Knight and the one where he joins the Green Lantern core! Those were simply badass! Thanks for that preview! That's the season finale that starts in a week together with the CW season finale, right? Looks pretty good! I was wondering when the Joker would finally make an appearance. Like Batman, the Joker seems to be stylized after his portrayal in the very first, corny Batman cartoon. He looks weird, and it's too bad he isn't voiced by Mark Hamill (He is the best Joker ever!), but if he has a good personality, I might get used to him. Can't wait for these episodes! BTBTB on! Quote
The Penguin Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Well, I've just watched "Day of The Dark Knight!". I'm a bit confused really.... The characters are indeed well done, loved the Mad Hatter and so on.... As for the plot, it looks like as if I've watched Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" with Bats in it.... ) I sure need to see other series in order to come to some conclusion, but it seems that nothing can overcome BTAS anyway. Good day, gentlemen! ) Quote

Thanks for replying Oky. Glad you're enjoying the show too. I will note one thing however, this show is probably best described as lighter or sillier, given that the word" "camp" implies it is self parody like Adam West's Batman. Not nitpicking by the way, I've just seen far too many annoying SHH posters hating on the show for its "campiness" Those episodes are great that you mentioned, but I also loved the Deadman and Aquaman episodes. Black Manta is pure badass and I love the more touching moments of Bruce being called into thel ight by his parents. Really shows that while this is a more silver age Batman, it doesn't ignore his tragic aspects. I'll very much disagree with you that he looks weird, that is a perfect representation of one of the finest artists ever - Dick Sprang - vision of the clown. Here he is: Plus he still looks pretty menacing Amazingly given my fandom for him, I'm quite glad Hamill isn't voicing this Joker, as not only does he need some fresh air, but I think a different voice would suit this version more. Glad you've warmed up to it, I have to say this is a true treat to comic hero fans! Batbrick Away! Quote
Oky Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 I sure need to see other series in order to come to some conclusion, but it seems that nothing can overcome BTAS anyway. Amen! Yes, "light" is probably the word I was looking for. As for the Joker... well, I don't know. He just looks more like someone wearing a Joker mask than the Clown Prince of Crime himself. But that might just be me. Also, he reminds me a lot of the Joker from the episode "Legends of the Dark Knight" from The New Batman Adventures where they made fun of the 50's cartoon. That sequence was just painful to watch. But As I said, I'll have to see him in action to make my final judgement about him. Batbrick Posted February 24, 2009 Author Posted February 24, 2009 Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone. Yes, "light" is probably the word I was looking for. I was just hoping that his strange appearance would be balanced out by a good voice performance. This Joker as I've said is inspired by Dick Sprang's Joker of the 50's, who had a smile so big it bordered on the grotesque. The segment from Legends of the dark Knight I loved mainly because as a comic fan I'm open to more interpretations, but not to worry, as this Joker will still be threatening, as he was even in those days. Early reviews of the two parter have been extremely positive to both his portrayal and voice which I'm glad of. It also gives me the nice relief that this Joker's humour will include a good amount of visual laughs. Once scene described has the massive tension between a fighting Owlman and Batman cut as Joker tiptoes through the background with a ticking bomb Still I guess that show is a great improvement over THE BATMAN, which I frankly hated. This may sound odd, but I've warmed to The Batman recently. There are still aspects I hate (the all male justice league, Joker, Penguin, Mr Freeze to name a few) but the portrayal of Doctor Strange was incredible, as was the awesomeness of Lex Luthor and Superman (with returning JLU voice actors!). Clayface was also adapted very cleverly, and Robin had a sad origin ep. Also, so far we've had Clock King, The Cavalier, The Terrible Trio and soon Joker as Batman enemies. Also confirmed to appear are Catwoman, Calender Man and Riddler at some point. Allies of the Bat world so far have included Bronze Tiger, Alfred and the upcoming Robin. Anyway, an awesome new episode is out as of a couple of days ago. Return of the Fearsome Fangs has Batman teaming up with Bronze Tiger to stop The Terrible Trio from claiming the Wudang Idol for their own evil purposes: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Gotta say the crew have really one upped BTAS in this instance. While in TAS the Terrible Trio were lame socialites here they are actually threatening and...cool! Batbrick Away! Quote
Oky Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I guess that show is a great improvement over THE BATMAN, which I frankly hated. I agree, The Batman did kinda suck. I guess that I, like Batbrick, could warm up to it just like I did to this show, but unless it will air on TV (where I can watch it for free) sometime, I wont bother trying. Why does nobody like Mystery of Batwoman, I wonder? I like it. It's just not among my faves. Maybe it's because the "mystery" was revealed about halfway through the movie. The rest was mostly just fighting. This Joker as I've said is inspired by Dick Sprang's Joker of the 50's, who had a smile so big it bordered on the grotesque. Btw, there is a sneak peek of the upcoming episode "Deep Cover for Batman!" on the CN website! (Link) Looks pretty damn awesome if you ask me! Here are my observations: Red Hood and Owlman rock! This is the first time we get to see the Batcave in this show! Hopefully this means that we will see Alfred and that he will have a bigger part in these episodes than in that christmas episode! The fight between Batsy and Owl(sy?) is awesome! The Riddler is only mentioned! Oh well, at least, this way, he wont get such a silly representation as the Clock King. Again, the Alternate Earth characters rock! After seeing this, I am even more excited about these two episodes and can't wait to see them! Bring on Friday! Quote

Actually, in retrospect, as much as we all anticipate more Gotham characters, this is actually an excellent way to approach the show. Attract people to the wider DC universe, but at the same time keep them watching for familiar faces. That way when they do come like the Joker here I damn near wet my pants with anticipation. This Joker still seems strange to me, but he's not bad! I guess I just need to get used to him. Oh what, really? Where did this info come from? It says "Riddler (mentioned)" on wikipedia, and in the sneak peek I saw, Batman just reports to Gordon over the phone that he has thwarted the Riddler's latest scheme while he's driving back to the Batcave. Unfortunately, Gordon cannot be heard. Also, the only thing we have seen of Alfred so far is a little glimpse from a flashback. Of course these characters could get bigger roles in future episodes, but for now, that's all we get. I can't access the video sadly, Americans only any other links? Oh, that's too bad. Oky Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I just saw the first part of the season finale and... what can I say... It was great! Some very nice things going on in this episode. As I mentioned before, the parallel Earth versions of the characters of the show were cool, and the Bat 'n' Owl fight was awesome! However, the best part of the episode was the flashback-history of parallel Joker! That scene with him sitting in the shadows and laughing insanely was beautifully done and quite creepy, so it reminded me of good ol' BTAS. And I must agree with the reviewer of this episode on The World's Finest - It really did seem as if the whole season was building up to this, with all the characters of this season appearing in this episode and all. Was that a pink Wildcat I spotted in the flashback? Either that's a strange coloring error, or one of the least terrifying villains I've ever seen. Anyway, I totally can't wait for next week now! "Who is this guy?" *PUNCH!* "I'm BATMAN!" Love it! Quote
Peppermint_M Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Well, I have never seen it but every new scrap of info makes me want to see it more (Is it sad that I will know most of the characters history before they are introduced? See, I was able to name every hero that turned up in JLU...) It looks rather cool and fun. I liked B:TAS but the way they screwed with the comics continuity and cannon got on my nerves. JL and JLU were good, 'specialy their coverage of classic story arcs. The Batman had a great Joker and Harley Quinn, Catwoman was cool in that series too. I have to say that the last series was my favourite (Yay, Oracle!). Brave and the Bold looks like a fun one, but it's not on in the UK yet... Quote

Wasn't it just beautiful? And do you have any doubt of the Joker's new voice now after that torture scene? However I mightily disagree with you on that scene, as things that reminisce of BTAS too much will be betraying the point of this show. That said, it did its job wonderfully while still fitting the tone. I agree the best part was the flashback, and final fight for me too. Absolutely spectacular! Was that a pink Wildcat I spotted in the flashback? Either that's a strange coloring error, or one of the least terrifying villains I've ever seen. Anyway, I totally can't wait for next week now! It WAS a Pink Wildcat, and no that was not a mistake. In fact, for me that is a stroke of genius! Every character is a similar yet opposite counterpart in that universe, so the tough talking old-school Wild Cat here is a much softer, shall we say Pussycat? Seriously, the amount of references and godies in this ep nearly made me explode with joy. Let me list a few: *Riddler and Gordon references at the beginning *Our first proper look at night time Gotham *Adam West homage in Batcave entrance *50's styled batcave! *Blue beetle not being shy but instead a hilarious sociopath *Batman typically punching Green Arrow's counterpart given their rivalry in his universe *Silver Cyclone is a villain Red Tornado could be if he disdained humanity, instead of embracing it (great end villain moment for him too) *Bruce's face tease again! *Aquaman and Black Manta's alternate counterparts colours are almost switched *Again, Pussycat! *Red Hood's origin is totally faithful! And really inspiring too. *Kiteman cameo for the third time in the series as a goodguy! I will never get sick of him! *Sinestro in yellow costume, no doubt he'll be donning that in the normal universe soon... *Not a reference, but Red Hood's guiding Batman using normal speak was brilliant writing. *Reference not only to the Joker, but to his partnership with Bats too! *"I'm Batman!" iconic line! *Gotham again at the end! *And best of lal the potshot at Marvel with universe 161 being Zombe planet, as the main Marvel universe is reversed as 616, so basically they are indirectly calling Marvel readers zombies! I approve There are a lot more I've forgotten too, but I'm too happy to care! Red Hood as alternate Joker was portrayed beautifully btw, really inspiring. A Joker who managed to will himself back from tragedy and insanity, and back onto the path of a hero. I almost like him more than Joker himself (mainly because he's so overexposed though.) Batbrick Away! Quote
