That IS cool. Too bad I don't order.

Hmm... 110 bucks for the slave 1. I was expecting 70.

Wow, that sucks. Even 6209 wasn't over $100. I hope Lego starts losing sales so they can some to their senses.

Y'know... I'm wondering, what IS the profit margin on lego for retailers? For the more common themes (City, Atlantis) discounts are usually at 25%!

Then it's probably 50% for SW. Probably lower for the other licensed sets though, since they have much more value.

How much of that is George Lucas' cut for the licensing fees?

Erm... meant to say in my previous post that Toys R Us & Zellers strikes down common themes by 25% off often. So profit margin might be higher, unless it's just a loss leader market strategy (which I doubt since it wouldn't really work.)

I hope so- That's an expensive ship, no matter how good it is.

Even so, they're getting stingy lately. The crappy themes are getting discounted all the time (as well as Bionicle) but, the better themes are being 'cherry-picked'. Instead of ALL 'City' being on sale, you'll get '25% off City FIRE sets'. What kind of crap is THAT?

I know, it seriously sucks  I hope we start to get better Lego discounts. It's making our wallets lighter too fast!

Update on Lego sales at the local TRU:

-All the new summer Star Wars sets were in stock for MSRP (which is still ridiculously expensive...)

-Public Transport and Passenger Train were also in stock, both at MSRP as well

No series two figues yet, hopefully they appear soon

Yeah, that is lame. It's also stupid how they're selling Fire sets from three or four years ago, but some of the cool 'mini' thems like Vikings (and SO many others) get discontinued the year or the year after they're released.

TRU at Yonge and Eglinton is under renovation, but still open. They've now moved the LEGO section to where part of the "R" Zone was. They've got the Public Transport and TRU Delivery Truck sets in, as well as all of the summer Technic sets, for those Technic lovers who were worried about a repeat of last year's Crane Truck. Prices were:

-Excavator: $249.99

-Mobile Crane: $129.99

-Container Truck: $89.99

-Motorcycle: $54.99

They've also restocked many other sets, including the 30070 LGM Promo sets. I didn't see any of the new Star Wars sets.

An employee said that the last he heard about series 2 minifigs was September, though I expect we'll start seeing them at Wal*Marts in early-mid august.

What's even more stupid is that TRU marks up the prices even though there is a Maximum Retail Sales Price. Isn't that illegal? :hmpf_bad:

What's even worse is, they'll then put them 'on sale'...and the sale price will still be more than the S@H price! LOL

The general buying public must not do any 'comparison shopping' to fall for THAT mess.

Speaking of the LGM promo...anyone know if we're going to get the 'Buzz Mini Ship' 30073) and 'Woody's Camp Out'(30072) sets here? I haven't seen, or heard, anything on them.

Hang on, let's not get too carried away here with TRU price rants.

MSRP is the manufacturers suggested retail price. Regardless of the product, some stores sell items for more than that, others for less. What dictates how much a store sells something for is whether they want to be competitive or not and if they can make the sales. There is also obviously the relation between the seller and the manufacturer (ie. if there is an extra man in between that drives up prices more etc.)

There is a lot of fuss over the 'price gauging' from TRU, but I'll give some examples to put things into perspective a bit more that TRU isn't so bad. Let's consider computer hardware - most brick and mortar stores sells pc components for horrible prices. They may sell a video card for say $300, when I could easily get this from another completely legit source for a 2/3 the price. Across the board, these stores charge significantly more for parts. The average consumer can't be bothered to either shop online or look at other stores where prices would be much lower. The average consumer is well familiar with these brick and mortar stores, and they are oblivious to what else is out there for their shopping needs.

Now, let's get back to Lego. First, I think there is a huge exaggeration concerning the mark ups on items. Look at the 2010 releases for Lego between TRU prices and S@H. There are very few sets that have been marked up, and even so, they are only up by a couple of bucks. When you buy from TRU, you pay tax and that is it. When you buy from S@H, 5/6 of the year you have to pay shipping on top of tax. There is not a single case in which paying shipping on a Lego set is less than the odd markup on a set at TRU. Free shipping from S&H is a great idea, but also quite often your box gets crushed. TRU has sales on Lego every couple of weeks. This is usually 20% off certain items, or they may have some sort of equivalent to a BOGO sale. With 20% off sets, this equates to $2 off every $10. Now, I know in some bizarre cases, TRU places a large markup on relatively cheap sets, and therefore even when they are on sale this still only comes out to around MSRP. However, this is rare. Again, look at the 2010 sets and you'll see there are very few markups, especially with the second wave of releases.

So, I know it seems all the rage to bash TRU, but for us Canadians, they really are not that bad if you just stop for a minute and actually do some price comparisons.

(Note, I don't like it either when TRU marks up a price, but I've learned to either bite the bullet, or else find an alternate means to get what I want for the price I want)

Some of their stuff is priced to be competitive, sure. Other stuff, not so much so. What really cheeses my biscuits though, is when they release a set for the same price as LEGO (such as the little yellow mail van) for $9.99...then, a month or so later, it's $10.99...then it's $13.99...

WTF is up with THAT?

And, quite honestly, with the TRU mark-up on most items and the cost to bus it to my nearest location, I might as well order direct from LEGO S@H...especially when I call my local TRU stores to see if an item is IN STOCK and they assure me it is and I travel all the way down there, only to find out that NO, IT'S NOT! They only checked what their COMPUTER said, even though I asked them to PHYSICALLY check, due to having run into this problem before. Crappy staff can really make the buying experience VERY unpleasant. So, yeah, when you factor that into the cost difference and the cost to travel there, S@H usually makes more sense for me. Unless I happen to be near a TRU ANYWAY and decide to pop in to see what they've got.

BTW...if anyone is looking for them...Amazon.ca got in a few Brickjournal Comp. #4. Not many though, as of yesterday. Going for $33.51 + tax, which is WAY more than the other volumes but, still less than the U.S. price listed at www.twomorrows.com, so...

Update: Don't bother. I went back and checked just now and they're sold out. Only showing ones available from 'other sellers' right now. Keep on eye on it though...might be getting more.

That happened to me with the Jungle Cutter. I wrote down the price when I realised I wanted it. A while later, when I had the money, I came back- and it was ten bucks more.

Sounds like time to go shopping. Did you see those Technic sets on the store shelves? :classic:
