woody64 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 (edited) I've stzarted to work on a rifle which fits more to the beginning of the 19th century (Napoleonic times) Here's a first snapshot: Andreas Edited December 31, 2008 by woody64 Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 That looks great already, what needs to be done to finish? Quote
woody64 Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 That looks great already, what needs to be done to finish? Unfortunately a lot of things, that*s only the basic design: - checking for correct sizes - checking if the mesh is waterproofed (to be printable) - converting to 3d format usable by manufacturer - uploading - doing the 1st check by the manufacturer - getting the 1st prototype - doing some corrections - 2nd pass .... Gamer Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 That is a lot of work, but it will payoff. What programe do you use and where did you buy it? Gamer. Quote
Head Fleet Architect Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 you just never stop do you? But very good work this would be used on skirmishers I presume? Quote

I've a run at the moment ... - Yes and no, I intended to make a prototype for a rifle which can be varied to different forms. -- the baker for skirmishers -- brown bess -- smaller sized for cavalry - 2nd I have to check if such an item is 3d printable. - 3rd: the manufactorer starts a personalized shop very soon,, which I will use for selling. For designing I use K-3d. Blender or sketchup would also be an opportunity. Andreas Edited December 31, 2008 by woody64 Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 You've proven yourself worthly again. Just like your bayonet this is awesome work. I can't wait till it's finished! Quote
Zorro Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I am looking forward to this as well. You are doing an excellent job, Woody64 ! Quote
woody64 Posted January 6, 2009 Author Posted January 6, 2009 I've updated the Baker rifle Design (see picture above) and actually I'm working on a Pallasch and a Periwig Andreas Quote
SlyOwl Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 These are looking good My only slight concern is that they are a little over-detailed, so may not fit in with the general Lego design aesthetic that well. However, given that you're probably going the full way with your army (decals, custom hats e.t.c.), it probably won't matter Quote

Can you give me a hint which parts you feel as over-detailed to bring that in with the next adjustements ... Andreas By the way, the beta version of the shop is available for a first visit. http://www.shapeways.com/shops/minifigcustomsin3d (beware it's still beta and maybe unstable till 8th January) Edited January 6, 2009 by woody64 Quote
Capt. Kirk Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) I think you maybe must try to make the shape not so sharp. If you understand what I mean ? Talking about the wig. Edited January 6, 2009 by Capt. Kirk Quote

The cocking elements on the baker rifle seem a little over detailed; they may turn out to be like the tongue on the snake: it breaks off very easily. The many lines on the periwig make it seem very detailed, but I guess that it'll disappear in real life. I wonder - how strong would that tail/tassle be? Quote

I wonder - how strong would that tail/tassle be? I've tried to use nearly the same elements as the Flintlock. I only added a pan ... Maybe the 3d design tool lines and shades confuse a little bit in the picture. You are right for the periwig since the lines show the necessary faces for the surface of the hair and are afterwards not visible. Here's a shaded version. Yeah the tassle maybe a problem. Maybe I should make only a small hair piece for the tassle. Edited January 6, 2009 by woody64 Quote
Capt. Kirk Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) Hi Andreas,... I did a fast sketch to outline what I mean with smoothness.... maybe it helps... As you can see, "the cheese roles" on the side are more rounded... By doing this they are more a part of the hair-piece & more according to the Lego design aesthetic (I think)... Also by doing this, it's doesn't look like they have been stuck on (said with all the respect for your design)... Good website I found with different aristocratic wigs: Diff. female wigs Guy who also did great custom pieces: BrickShelf Gallery His website Edited January 6, 2009 by Capt. Kirk Quote

Guy who also did great custom pieces: BrickShelf Gallery His website Thanks a lot for this drawing, that's exactly what I was searching for. I will give that a try later on .... Also the brickshelf link is great. I will contact the guy for some questions since the pictures are mainly rendered (I think). Maybe he's interested in 3d printing since he wrote that the other possibilities are to expensive. Andreas Quote
woody64 Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 (edited) That should come more nearby to your suggestion ... 3d View Andreas Edited January 7, 2009 by woody64 Quote
Capt. Kirk Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 (edited) Looking great,... but this is my view/opinion of the wig... maybe other members will think different. In spite of this, I think you maybe should try to make "the cheese roles" fatter. By the way,... if you need sketch... just ask. Edited January 7, 2009 by Capt. Kirk Quote
Ratshot Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 (edited) Do you make this stuff and sell it? Edited February 28, 2010 by Ratshot Quote

CPT. Jr Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 (edited) You beat me to it, lol. I was working on similar items, they look good. My father owns a brown bess along with a 45 cal flintlock rifle, they are realy interesting pieces, expecially the mechanism. Nice work! Bakers rifles inspiration from sharpes army perhaps? CPT. Jr Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 it appears similar to yours blender 3d file to 3d printing to a mold and mass production. (i watched a couple of the sharpes movies) the wig looks reall well too Quote
woody64 Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 (edited) Yesterday I was able to make a test piece on a different printer. This printer uses ABS material instead of the White and Flexible (Polyamid 2200) which I have used recently. Here's a picture: - The surface is a little bit smoother - The printer uses supporting material to breakaway (that's the cheapter printer class), therefore small pieces may be damaged. - There seems to be some holes in the surface - This printer seems to have troubles with wall sizes beyond 0,8. The walls where there but sometimes they were'nt filled as expected - Also the rifle was on the end a little bit to small for this printer type and white and flexible seems the best material for this small piece - the hellboy has to be painted to see the face and hair structure All these problems can only be seen on pieces itself not on the photo provided. Capt. Kirk Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 (edited) Hi Andreas, If I want to order some stuff,... how does this work ? And is it possible to see your "catalogue" with your work somewhere ? Thanks in advance for a reply. Grtz, kurt Edited January 29, 2009 by Capt. Kirk Quote
